Free Music Notes for Beautiful GarbageFree Music Review: Garbage pulls it off once again! Hit: 5 Stars
Garbage must've been stressed when writting a follow-up to their incredibly sucessful prior albums. But, instead of trying to recycle the same sound which made Version 2.0 and Garbage so popular, Garbage went out on a limb and came out with something almost completely different. They also pulled it off brillantly and beautifully.Garbage seems to flow in and out of different sounds and genres on this record, yet each song flows perfectly into the next. From the driving guitars of "Shut Your Mouth" to the techo blips of "Cherry Lips," each song has been perfectly placed to enhance the listening experience, which definitely adds to overall appeal of the album. Garbage made a wise decision of opening the album with "Shut Your Mouth." It's loud and powerful, a great anthem for those of us who are sick of today's boy-band ridden pop culture. It explodes with angst and fury, yet remains cool and calculated throughout. An amazing track all around. Beautifulgarbage then takes a quick turn into the gender bending realm of "Androgyny," the album's first single. The lyrics drip with sexual enthuiasm, with Shirley crooning "You free your mind in your androgyny" as a powerful guitar rips through the chorus. An excellent rock/pop track, sprinkled with just the right amount of R&B flavor to make it a stand-out. If you thought the first transistion between tracks was surprising, this one will blow you away. "Androgyny" gives way to "Can't Cry These Tears" a throw-back to the dreamy girl pop of the 60's. Shirley swoons over clanging bells and soft guitars, mixed with strange techo garbled samples, it simply must be heard to understand. My description may sound like a stretch, but Garbage pulled it off perfectly. "Til The Day I Die" is next. An all out fun track, it has an awesome beat and the lyrics are great, and it's also full of surprises, such as the "gospel-type" choir that srings up in the middle of song to back up Shirley, and appears once again in the amazing outro of the song. The somber soundscape of "Cup of Coffee" is a direct contrast to the edgy guitars of the previous track, but it still is a welcomed departure. A longing ballad with Gothic influences, you can almost feel Shirley's pain as she shows her vulnerabilty over warped violins and piano dispersed throughout drums and a distinct bass line, laden with other techo sounds that fit perfectly into the musical puzzle. Everything adds up to a poweful ballad. One of Garbage's best. Shirley once again takes on the "angry chick" persona in "Silence is Golden" which is, ironically, the loudest track on the album. With explosive guitar and Shirley's strong vocal performance, this track is up there amoung the best. "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" shows up next. This song is so sweet it will give you a toothache, but it will leave you begging for more as it is, without a doubt, the most pop sounding song on the record. It's light, poppy aura does not take away anything from the song, it only adds to it. The ending is a slam, bang mixture of vocals that is arranged so perfectly, you can't help but want to dance. One of the most fun tracks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, "Cherry Lips" will definitely go down in Garbage's musical history. Another rocker rolls around, as "Breaking Up the Girl" is next on this musical tour. Featuring great lyrics and an amazing chorus, this rock track was a great choice for a single. It has great staying power, and only makes you want to listen to it over and over. "Breaking Up the Girl" is one of Garbage's shining rock/pop achievements along the lines of "Only Happy When it Rains" and "Special." The album's fast tempo slows down a bit with "Drive You Home," a beautiful ballad which may seem bare compared to some of Garbage's other mulit-layered songs, but the way it's arranged with subtle violins amoung soft guitars and drums, it will quickly pull you into it's emotional grasp and won't let go until this soothing ballad has run it's course. The album's tempo picks up quite a bit with "Parade." It's fast, fun, and it will get stuck in your head for days. A guitar driven track, it sets up for a great chorus and does not let down throughout it's entirety. The brooding "Nobody Loves You" is next, and it sets a wonderfully eerie tone with it's sudden bursts of music, dark lyrics and Shirley's low, sultry tone. Very different sounding from anything Garbage has even done thus far, it's in a league of it's own. With it's whisps of incoherent lyrics and twangy guitars, it creates an amazing atmosphere, unlike any other song I have ever encountered. "Untouchable" blasts onto the scene with it's loud techno bee-bops and powerful "I'm in charge" lyrics. Unfortunately, this is the album's low point. "Untouchable" is in no way, shape or form, a bad song. It just isn't up to par with all the amazing songs that have preceeded it. Garbage obviously had fun with this song, and I'm sure it's meant to be over the top, and in that regaurd, it succeeds wonderfully. The album then wraps up with the haunting "So Like a Rose." You can hear the anguish in Shirley's vocals, and the bare guitar only amplifies it. A chilling account of a friends suicide, it's an excellent way to wrap up this amazing album, and really, if you think about it, the ONLY way to wrap up this album. Beautifulgarbage has character, variety and of course, great songs. I highly recommened this album if you're interested in Garbage, or just want some new music to listen to. I can guarantee you, you won't be disappointed. And despite my lengthy description, this album could easily be described with just one word, and that word is: masterpiece.
Free Music Review: "beautifulgarbage" is awesome !! Hit: 5 Stars
Like most of us, I've been looking forward so much to hearing "beautifulgarbage", though I never thought I'd hear it six weeks before it's release. Since we first heard that this album was gonna be much darker than Version 2.0 and more like the S/T album, I've been hoping to come across a track out of the same mould as my fave all time Garbage track "Vow"..... I didn't have to wait very long, namely track Your Mouth", easily the most Vow-esque song on the album.... It's awesome and it MUST be a "single". Like "Vow", it's loud, full of power and in ya face both musically and lyrically."Androgyny"... most of us have heard it many times by now. I love it, though perhaps not the preferred or obvious choice for the first single. I've put my neck on the block by saying it's gonna be Top Ten in the UK singles charts.... I'm sure I'm gonna keep my head. "Can't Cry These Tears" aka The Nose Bleed Song hahaha....opens up with the chorus, now there's a novelty.... dare I say the verses reminded me of what one of Shirl's fellow Scots Sheena Easton was doing in the eighties.... most of you statesiders should remember her... she was huge in the US and was taken under the wing of Prince. It's also got a bit of a 1950's/ 60's feel to it. Woo woo, Shirl' certainly reached dizzy heights with her vocal. "Til The Day I Die".... What hit me straight away, was the guitar riff which reminds me so much of the memorable riff in "I Think I'm Paranoid", which I love, so that's my fave bit about "Til The Day I Die". "Cup Of Coffee".... What a gorgeous song, with beautiful lyrics and vocals by Shirl'. It certainly does have the feel and atmosphere of "Soldier Through This". I'd been looking forward to hearing the tubular bells in "Cherry Lips", yet ironically, Duke's piano in "Cup Of Coffee", which features throughout, reminds me of the eerie beauty of parts of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells album. "Silence Is Golden"..... is a solid album track with great drum and guitars and very loud. Shirl' sounds so much like Polly Harvey at times. With it's varying mood swings, this track is to "bg" what "Hammering In My Head" is to Version 2.0. "Cherry Lips (go baby go).... A very poppy but great upbeat song. Flagged as the follow up single to Androgyny, I think it'll be a huge hit. I love the tubular bells and the hand clapping certainly adds to the presence of the song.... Hey, guys n gurls, I can see us all now at Garbage's gigs striking a pose like the fans on Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" video, with arms raised aloft in anticipation of the hand clapping sequences...let's spread the word...what an awesome sight that would be for the band !!! "Breaking Up The Girl".... I love this track and think it's a good choice for the third single. From the moment the chorus first hit my speakers, I could visualise the Foo Fighters and Hole doing this track and Shirl's vocal style sounds like Dave Grohl meets Courtney Love. "Drive You Home"... WOW, what a stunningly gorgeous, beautiful, brilliant song... I love it !! The guitar riff sounds amazingly like a slowed down version of Radiohead's, on their song "Sulk" from the album The Bends.... Take a listen? And I adore Shirl's melodies on this track which along with the lyrics are quite beautiful....very Karen Carpenter-esque and she could move me to tears, as does this track. Magical !! "Parade"...what an awesome track !!! ... MUST BE A SINGLE !!! ... it's got all the right ingredients, it's "OHWIR" meets "Stupid Girl" meets "Push It".... Duke said this is the fastest track Garbage has ever recorded at 150bpm.....it'll be a hugely popular "live" track too. Incredible stuff !!! "Nobody Loves You".....my immediate impression of this track, and I've not changed my mind, is Garbage has decided to write and record their very own James Bond theme.... It oozes incidental music clips...you've gotta love the production. "Untouchable"..... very catchy song but will Garbage consider releasing this as a single? I think "TLC" and "Destiny's Child would `cos it's their sort of sound. I've read that "Untouchable" is "Eurythmics-esque"? What? ... I don't see or hear that at all. Could be a possible single with it's fashionable R&B / Hip hop theme. "So Like A Rose".....starts off a little like Radioheads "Planet Telex" from "The Bends" album, then when the guitar hits the speakers I'd swear it's gonna turn into "More Than Words" by Extreme, remember them?.... an uncanny resemblance though, give it a listen and compare. Shirl's vocals on "So Like A Rose" also got me thinking, then it hit me like a bolt out of the blue.... It's like Shirl' has gone back in time to the "Angelfish" album.... Listen to "Angelfish then play this track, I know I ain't imagining it. The guitar break in mid track is amazing, I really love it and Shirl's totally stunning harmonies at the end of the track are to die for. "beautifulgarbage" is an AWESOME album which has taken me by storm and is blowing me away. Whilst it doesn't contain tracks that in my opinion, are in the same class as "Vow", "OHWIR", "Queer", "Stupid Girl"and "Milk" from the S/T album, in it's own way, like Version 2.0 before it, "beautifulgarbage" is as brilliant as it's predecessors. I'm looking forward more than ever, to buying the album on 1st October, and then, it's to the gigs.... It's good to be alive !!!!!
Free Music Review: I honestly can't see the problem Hit: 5 Stars
One customer who reviewed this album said that it felt like a Jessica Simpson CD. Another one implied that Shirley Manson sounds like Britney Spears on this album... What a joke! True, the first single "Androgyny" could be misleading, delivering a batch of hooks so catchy just like the next Max Martin penned vapid pop hit you almost feel embarrassed singing along to it; But still it has that edge, that special element that lets you know that this is Garbage, not pop garbage (Pun intended) & that Garbage are artists- Working their arses off in the studio (A glimpse in the album's credits will let you know that it was recorded for over a year, not even mentioning the anticipation created since Garbage's last release- "The World Is Not Enough", the themesong for the James Bond movie of the same name in December of 1999. If that's not a long enough time...) just to provide us with all of those wonderful sounds, superb melodies & Shirley Manson's creamwithacherryontop vocals. But I digress- My point is that this is one of the year's best albums, enjoyable to an eerie extent. The album begins with "Shut Your Mouth", your typical propulsive Garbage firstsongonthealbum that gets you immediately hooked (Oh, & I pity the Amazon critic who compared it to Missy Elliott. Get your ears cleaned mate!). Then comes "Androgyny", that perfect alternative electropop/rock crunch that sounds so familiar it hurts (Garbage was never plagiarismfree- Overt or hidden, & this is not the last point in the album when you'll hear yourself thinking "Where have I heard this before?"- The tracklisting itself provides enough winks to other songtitles; But Garbage knows who to steal from & how to do it so well that you just can't abstain from forgiving them). From this point the album becomes so diverse @ sound, melody & feel, treading 1950'sesque disposable schmaltz ("Can t Cry These Tears"), acidtechno ("Til The Day I Die") & even lighthearted Britpop ("Breaking Up The Girl"); Not even mentioning disco ("Untouchable") & 1980's nonchalant pop mixed with a kindergarden tune ("Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)"). However there are four real outstanding tracks here- First of all, the album offers three ballads. Now, Garbage are capable of writing beautiful ballads (Checkout Garbage's "A Stroke Of Luck" & "Milk" or Version 2.0's "Medication" & "You Look So Fine") but somehow they always get concealed due to the majority of the louder tracks on each album. I really hope that listeners won't overlook them here, because two of those three (The outro, "So Like A Rose", is disappointingly bland) are absolutely majestic- "Cup Of Coffee" is as magical & sublime as if it was taken straight out of a 1960's motion picture soundtrack, whilst "Drive You Home" is just a heartwarming acoustic number that really manages to capture a moment. The other two remarkable songs are "Silence Is Golden" & "Nobody Loves You", both heartfelt attempts of creating epics- Of course Garbage were never Radiohead or Pink Floyd, but they always know how to create songs with unlikely twists & loads of bizarre soundeffects- First there was "Vow" on the debut, then came "Hammering In My Head" on the sophomore, & now these two songs. "Nobody Loves You" is particularly sonic & imaginative, coming really close to a true masterpiece. I won't say that the album is flawless though- As always with Garbage, the lyrics are just passable most of the time however they can get to a real low occasionally ("Androgyny" fails to deliver the sexual controversy it claims to, whilst "Parade" falls straight on its face when it tries to comment on Britneyesque cheap pop music); But the music always manages to save it, especially on this album that sounds like a combination the first two but still divergent- The electronic experimentalism of Version 2.0 is reinforced by a real band sound, even stronger than the one sported on the debut-Butch Vig's robust drumming accompanied by Steve Marker's delectable guitarchords topped by the aforementioned celestial/malevolent vocals courtesy of Shirley Manson that can save even the the most tedious melody; However with an album such as this where every song is a potential respectable single, she doesn't really need to strain.

THE SHADES OF PINK ATTACK MY EYES WHILE AN UNFAMILIAR SOUND APPROACHES MY EARS, A SOUND THAT WILL SOON BE MEMORIZED IN THE FUTURE. THE NEW DEFINITION OF GARBAGE. BUT LOOK UP THE DEFINITION IN THE DICTIONARY AND FIND A PICTURE OF BRITTANY SPEARS...BUT WHO SAID THAT WAS A BAD THING? MY PSYCHIATRIST, THE PLAY BUTTON, BRINGS ME SURPRISIN THERAPY. IN SHOCK BECAUSE SHIRLEY CURSED...MORE THAN ONCE IN A SONG. IN THE GARBAGE HISTORY BOOKS, "MEDICATION" IS THE ONLY SONG SHE CURSED, WHICH WAS ONLY ONE WORD. HOWEVER, THE POTTY MOUTH SHOULDNT BE THE ONLY "HOT TOPIC" FROM THE HIGHLY MEANINGFUL OPENER, "SHUT YOUR MOUTH". THIS IS THE START TO BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE... WE'VE ALL HEARD "ANDROGYNY", BUT AFTER LISTENIN TO IT A COUPLE TIMES, IT STARTS TO BECOME YOUR FRIEND. YES, THINK OF IT AS YOUR ANDROGYNOUS FRIEND. THE POINT IS, ITS A GOOD SONG. ANDROGYNIZE YOURSELF BY WATCHING THE VIDEO AT (...). (I KNOW WHAT ANDROGYNY MEANS, MY ANDROGYNY JOKES WERE STUPID I KNOW AND COINCIDENCE, I WAS WEARIN MY ANDROGNOUS MANSON SHIRT TODAY TOO, THAT WOULD BE THE MECHANICAL ANIMALS TEE) "CAN'T CRY THESE TEARS ANYMORE" SOUNDS LIKE A 50's SONG WITH A TWIST OF GARBAGE AND A 'SWEET SHIRLEY' VOCALS. CATCHY TUNES PENETRATE THE SIMPLE MINDS AND THE ADVANCED THINKERS TOO, AND THERE ARE MANY OF THEM ON THIS CD, BUT "TIL THE DAY I DIE" SEEMS DIFFERENT. DIFFERENT, GOOD. "IT TOOK A CUP OF COFFEE, TO PROVE THAT YOU DONT LOVE ME...". LOVE. BASICALLY THATS WHAT THESE SONGS ARE ABOUT. ISNT EVERYTHIN? I DO LOVE THAT LINE THOUGH AND THE REST OF THE LYRICS FROM "CUP OF COFFEE". OLD GARBAGE, "SILENCE IS GOLDEN". CLOSET SOUNDIN SONG TO AN OLDER GARBAGE SONG. GOOD SONG. VERY DIFFERENT APPOACH VOCALLY. "CHERRY LIPS (GO BABY GO)" IS INTERESTIN, BUT MORE LIKE A "CHICK SONG". BUT I LIKE IT. HAHA. HM...CATCHY CHOURS AND BACKGROUND VOCALS. "BREAKING UP THE GIRL" IS COMMERCIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT ALONE, AND I CAN SEE A VIDEO FOR THIS ONE, NEXT SINGLE. ONE OF THE BEST SONGS ON HERE, "DRIVE YOU HOME", GREAT LYRICS AND VOCALS, SLOW SONG, EVERYTHING JUST GOES TOGETHER PERFECT. THE FEEL FOR THIS SONG WILL "DRIVE YOU HOME", WHILE YOU'RE WRAPPED INTO THE LYRICS, AS YOU RELATE IT TO YOURSELF. THE "HAPPY", "POSITIVE", 'KIDS RULE THE WORLD DAY' FEEL FOR "PARADE" IS OBVIOUS WITH THE LYRICS. FIRST THING THAT IT REMINDED ME OF WAS FILTER'S "TAKE MY PICTURE". DEFINATELY A SONG THAT WILL STICK IN YOU HEAD ALL DAY AND MAKE YOUR LEG MOVE TO THE BEAT. HOWEVER WHEN I SAY THIS, THIS ISNT THE ONLY SONG THAT WILL CAUSE THE SAME EFFECT. ANOTHER SONG THAT CLOSELY RESEMBLES OLD GARBAGE. BUT WHY AM I TALKIN ABOUT THEIR EARLIER STUFF, WELL, I FIND THE DIFFERENCE TO THIS ALBUM COMPARED TO THE FIRST 2, IS DRASTIC. WELL ITS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU SAY "HEY, SOMETHINGS DIFFERENT". GOOD SONG, GOOD VOCALS, BUT I THINK IVE SAID THAT FOR EVERY SONG, I CANT DO A SONG BY SONG BREAKDOWN, TOO MANY SONGS, AND ONLY SO MUCH TO SAY. BUT SHIRELY MANSON HAS A GOOD VOICE ANYWAY. I USE "GOOD" TOO MUCH. "NOBODY LOVES YOU" BRINGS BACK THE GREAT FEEL OF "MILK" AND "YOU LOOK SO FINE" FROM EARLIER ALBUMS. IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH ME THAT THIS SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE A BRITTANY SPEARS SONG THEN...THEN..., WELL IT DOES. UNFORTUNATELY, IVE HEARD A WHOLE BRITTANY SPEARS ALBUM AT WORK, BUT I WAS FORCED. "UNTOUCHABLE" HAS THE "CHICK" FEEL BUT STILL ENJOYABLE, FOR ME ANYWAY. I HAVENT HEARD ANYBODY'S OPINIONS ON THIS ALBUM YET. NOBODY AT HELL (SCHOOL) EVEN WANTED TO BUY THE ALBUM, EVEN THE GIRLS (THAT I TALK TO). IT ALSO HAS THE BEFOREMENTIONED BRITTANY SPEARS-LIKE FEEL TO IT. IT ALSO CASTS THE SAME CURSE THAT BRITTANY WOULD CAST, THE COMMERCIALNESS FROM A SIMPLE, SHORT CHOURS. AND TO CONCLUDE THIS 13 TRACK COLLECTION OF GARBAGE, IS THE BEAUTIFUL, "SO LIKE A ROSE". A GREAT, SLOW, STRONG, POWERFUL SONG. WONDERFUL ENDIN TO THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE. THE MUSIC ALL STAYS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME TO THEIR OLDER STUFF. DEFINATELY DIFFERENT THOUGH. MORE DIFFERENCE FOR THIS ONE FROM ANY OF THEIR EARLIER ALBUMS THAN AN EARLIER ALBUM TO ANOTHER EARLY ALBUM. THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN CONFUSIN, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. ITS GOOD, MORE OF A "CHICK" RECORD THOUGH. STILL GOOD. ILL ALWAYS LOVE SHIRELY MANSON THOUGH. AND I BELIEVE SHE USED A JOHN LENNON REPLICA GUITAR AND TOOK GUITAR LESSONS. NOW ITS YOUR DECISION...(but if you dont buy it ill hunt you down somehow and)...
Free Music Review: beautifulgarbage, me want poster by the yeti Hit: 5 Stars
Hey, this album is completely different to the first two albums with songs like Cherry Lips and Androgyny and Shut Your Mouth and nnnnnnnnhhhhhhh overload. Anyway, here's my review of beautifulgarbage.Shut Your Mouth: The opening song of the album starts off with a good old distorted guitar, on first hearing it sounds like a mediocre rap song, but then the chorus comes up and it's garbage all the way, halfway through there is a very cool bridge. Overall the song is a good opener, the lyrics are strong, Shirley says they're about herself but who knows, rumours of Chrstina Aguilera have been going around... Androgyny: Ah the first single, I have to say I was a bit surprised by this song as I thought it sounded a bit like a Destiny Child's song (don't ask why) but after a while it grows on you with a cool guitar fills. The lyrics are kinda cool, kind of brave for garbage to start out with this song in my view, but it grows on you and I know of a few fans who have been won over by this. Cant' Cry These Tears: This song is like the 60s diner song all over again, literally I could see it appearing in the Grease film, very cool song though, there's a really cool guitar solo near the end, but basically a good break up song, it's completely different which is why I love it, completely new, I think it would be a good Christmas single too, got that kinda feeling. Til The Day I Die: The song starts off with a weird little screwed up singing, but then the guitar riff comes in and that loveable Shirley voice comes in. The lyrics are really cool, kinda corny, "Holy jesus, holy rock and roll" but it's a good fun song all over. Cup Of Coffee: This song seeps depression about break ups but not in your Britney way, this is true melodramatic singing, cool effects in the background, kinda like an electric violin. Not really else much to say apart from the papers love it. Silence Is Golden: This has to be one of my all time favourite Garbage songs, heavy then mellow, heavy then mellow it's so damn cool with this awesome guitar riff with loads of embellishments, then the chorus comes really quickly. Excellent bridge, excellent song, and they said it was gonna be a b-side the shame. Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go): Bubblegum, candyfloss girl all the way, this is Shirley in no other way, apparently theirs a tuba in their somewhere, I can't find it yet, and the best bit of it all is the clapping, guranteed you'll be clapping by the end. Anyway, it's all about a cute little boy, ah Shirley we didn't know you liked them that young. Breaking Up The Girl: After hearing Cherry Lips its back to the usual garbage, a standard song, but good, it builds up to the chorus then just lets loose. I love it and loads of people on the bbs do, you gotta love these kinda pep talk songs. Drive You Home: It's so peaceful, it's so cool and the lyrics are very meaningful, I love the chorus and the build up, this song is a real piece of art, you gotta hear it to believe it, I'd love to hear an acoustic version of this live. Parade: First time I heard this I thought Feeder, but no. It's a very cool song all about the new bands and wannabes who don't really know what they want in life. It's another classic song, a good single, kind of a more rocky song, and upbeat in a depressed way. Untouchable: This song has to be about Christina, it's so true. But yeah, it's not particularly amazing, not my favourite but the lyrics are good, bit of a dodgy tune, so don't expect to love it, just don't loathe it. Nobody Loves You: I swear this is just like The World Is Not Enough, but I love it, there are loads of different parts to this song, but don't get put off if you didn't like The World Is... cos it's only the intro really which sounds like it, very good song though, nice and slow, with a solid drum beat coming in for non verse parts. Expect to hear this live, because it should be played. So Like A Rose: This is 6:20 of pure relaxing music, Shirley's voice is so soft and melodic it's just lovely, really this song basically sums up most of the album in itself, it's got a very relaxing fading in and out effect, definitely one for the lighters. There you have it beautifulgarbage summed up by an old fan. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. By Stephen Yates - The Yeti
