Free Music Notes for Beautiful Garbage

Free Music Review: Third album, third masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

After Garbage amazed the world with their first two stunning albums (1995's self-titled debut and 1998's Version 2.0), both enormously popular and each spawning long strings of hits, critics pondered: could they possibly do it again? Could Garbage release ANOTHER equally amazing album that invokes that same old magic, yet still sounds fresh and new?

Happily, the answer to both questions is YES! ... On their third album,Garbage have taken their sound to a whole new level. They have said themselves that this is definitely their "most experimental" and "unabashededly pop" album they have ever done. They aren't lying.
Where "experimenting" is a dangerous word for most bands and a task most fail miserably at, Garbage embrace and excel at it. This is a band that can do no wrong. ... And where "pop" is a word that many traditional Garbage fans may rebuff, understand that beautifulgarbage is pop at it's finest. ...This is the pop that The Beatles, The Carpenters, and Blondie created. Yes, it is that good. If the Grammys had any sense, this album would have been up for AND WON Best Pop Vocal Album. beautifulgarbage is the first great album of the New Millenium.

Song by song review:

Shut Your Mouth: One of the album's strongest tracks. The edgy guitar riff and bouncy beat make you want to push this one on "repeat" for hours. Great rock song.

Androgyny: This song scared a lot of people off as it was the unfortunate first single of beautifulgarbage. After awhile though, you see it's beauty and it's quirky Madonna-meets-TLC vibe will win you over. This song isn't a standout, but still a fine pop song.

Can't Cry These Tears: Shirley's voice can fit just as easily into this genre as Darlene Love and Lesley Gore. This song is so good that if it had been released in 1965, it would have gone straight to #1

'Til The Day I Die: Imagine Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry all in one. That's the best way to describe this perky and sexy rock number. ...An anthem for rocker-chicks everywhere.

Cup of Coffee: This depressing song will bring a smile to the black hearts of old-school Garbage fans. Shirley is at her most open and honest, and her pain is clear. It is hautingly beautiful, and brings to mind the way the Carpenters might sound in the new millenium.

Silence Is Golden: Shirley's sadness turns to rage on this track. Yes, this song hits you hard. Shirley's angst and urgency grow as the song presses on-in the last 30 seconds her pain mounts to an almost unbearable height and she screams the last few lines with all she has left in her, before crumbling from exhaustion. Heavy.
Heavy.

Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!): This is one of best pop tracks you will ever hear. ... The bubbly rhythm and flirty verses, complemented by the swelling bridge and anthematic chorus make this song one of Garbage's best and most unique songs to date.

Breaking Up The Girl: This song reminds me a lot of the hit "Special". Really uplifting -making it another example of the quality of this great pop album.

Drive You Home: A quieter Garbage moment. Everyone knows that this band writes amazing ballads, and this is no exception. Shirley dedicates to this song to someone special, and the song is basically an ode of gratitude to him/her. ...

Parade: This is a great post-9/11 song. The flourishing chorus and soaring guitars evoke an (upbeat) Pumpkins song. ...

Nobody Loves You: A sonic masterpiece. This track is a soundscape similar to something Portishead or possibly Radiohead (at their finer moments) would create. It is one of the best on the album.

Untouchable: Hang on, tight, everybody. No, this isn''t Missy Elliot. It is still Garbage. The song is a hybrid of hip-hop/sugar pop experimentation. Ironically, the song has a very tongue and cheek feel, as if Garbage is poking fun at the very genre the song falls in.

So Like A Rose: A strange, eerie ballad to end the album. It leaves you feeling wistful and hollow. However, if you have ever lost someone, this song will be near and dear to your heart. ... A great song to end a great album.

If you haven't gotten this album yet, please, just go get it. You will be sorry if you don't.

Free Music Review: A Break from the Usual, but still good
Hit: 5 Stars

Starting Off:

Ugh...Garbage has succumed to Enhanced CD hell. I haven't actually checked to see what the enhanced [junk] is yet, but, if it's like most, it's probably just a waste of space. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's go to the song by song breakdown. This won't be pretty, or give you a lot of information about the CD, probably, it's just gonna be word or two sentences about the song, and a rating out of 5

Track 1: Shut Your Mouth
This sounded like a damn Brassy track when it first started. It says a lot when a song can make you go from hating it to loving it within the span of 3:25. Good strong start, but could be better. 4/5

Track 2: Androgyny
Well, this is the one song that everyone has heard, so hopefully I don't have to say a whole lot here. It's the shortest track on the CD, and it shows. Decent, but it could really benefit from another :30-:45 or so. 3.5/5

Track 3: Can't Cry These Tears Anymore
And this is where the CD starts to get unusual(well, unusual for Garbage, at least.) Slow mellow track here, and it's not the only one on the CD. Relies too much on the chorus, and not enough on the song itself. 3.5/5

Track 4: Til the Day I Die
Back to the fun fast songs. This will be a type of song that you either love or hate. I love it. 5/5

Track 5: Cup of Coffee
Powerful, sad song. It's the "Milk" of Beautiful Garbage. Well, it got ME choked up at least. Second favorite track on the CD. I complained about Androgyny's length, and this song is only 3 seconds longer, but it works here, it just doesn't feel right in Androgyny. 5/5

Track 6: Silence is Golden
I had already heard this track before buying the CD, I had a live version of it. It sounded like absolute [junk].... The CD version is much, much better. Now that I can actually UNDERSTAND the lyrics, I can really idenfity with it. 4.5/5

Track 7: Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)
Now I understand why this song got such hype from Garbage fansites. It totally rocks, 3rd favorite song on the album. However, I wonder how much of it is studio workings, because the voice REALLY doesn't sound like Shirl's. 5/5

Track 8: Breaking up the Girl
I'm uhm...not really sure if I like this song or not. It's hard to pinpoint this song and give it a rating. It's just got a certain quality about it that I can't get into yet. 3.5/5, I guess

Track 9: Drive You Home
I don't really have a comment on this track, except that I like it. 4/5

Track 10: Parade
Best track on the CD, easily. And it has the best musical line of the year. "Oh let's bomb the factory/that makes all the wannabes/Let's burst all the bubbles/That brainwash the masses" 6/5

Track 11: Nobody Loves You
Followed up with the worst track of the album. Of course, that's like a phrase like "bad sex", cause even when it's bad, it's still really good. I just never got into the song, really. It couldn't hook me. I found myself fading away, thinking of other things, and that's never a good sign. 3/5

Track 12: Untouchable

Another chorus-heavy song, but it doesn't matter here, cause this chorus is really damn good. 4/5

Track 13: So Like a Rose

I can really identify with these lyrics as well. This is my life song from about 3-5 years ago. 5/5

Overall thoughts:

5/5, were you REALLY expecting me to give it anything else? I mean, c'mon, really? Bottom line is this: If you have a pair of ears, go out and buy it now.

It doesn't really sound too much like either of the other two Garbage CDs. This is probably the bravest Garbage CD so far as well. Showing that they're willing to go out and try new things, instead of just sticking with what works. Not as many "pick up and start singing along with right away" songs, like on the other two. More emotionally in depth songs on this album. Ladies and Gentleman: Garbage has grown up. I have a feeling that some Garbage fans may be dissapointed with this album, but I sure as hell ain't.

Free Music Review: garbage tkes new direction
Hit: 5 Stars

Garbage's music could be described as an indie-rock conglomeration. They incorporate different styles and techniques that, when layered, form a complex network of unique sounds that give Garbage their infamy. The new album, "Beautiful Garbage," released in the US on Oct. 2, meshes tough lyrics with the sporadic lapse into vulnerability, familiar jagged guitar chords, and the occasional tribute to form a satisfyingly diverse album that goes where no band has gone before. Garbage consists of Shirley Manson's vocals, Butch Vig, who has worked previously on hit records by Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins, on drums, Steve Marker on bass and Duke Erikson on lead guitar. The band was popularized with their first two hit records (self-titled, and "Version 2.0") which drove some of their songs to the mainstream. "Only Happy When It Rains," "Queer," "Special" and "When I Grow Up," are some of Garbage's more prevalent hits. Manson's image as a tough vixen was solidified by the success of their previous singles, but "Beautiful Garbage" shows her more vulnerable side with admittances such as "I never said that I was perfect/but I can drive you home," from "Drive You Home." The CD begins with the contradictory "Shut Your Mouth." The song is aimed at those who want too much too fast, and will inevitably be overwhelmed by it. It addresses the folly of those who are constantly transforming in an attempt to be everything to everyone. The song has quickly flowing vocals that contrast with the often harsh, accusational lyrics, and interjecting guitar stylings to form a razor sharp effect that perfectly matches the song's message. The first single from the album, "Androgyny," is a somewhat lighthearted song preaching the need for companionship. Its theme is self-evident and trite, as it states "Nobody wants to feel alone." "Androgyny" seems focused toward the mainstream pop audience with its catchy chorus, and synthesizer-heavy echoes. It is reminiscent of Blur's "Boys and Girls," but the latter successfully broadcast its message without wearing a pseudo-pop mask. "Cup of Coffee" is centered around a familiar topic: the unexpected end to a relationship. It is about withdrawal and how it is dealt with. The song is primarily soft and melodic, but picks up in parts to create smooth transitions. The lyrics are delivered in a sultry manner that leaves a lingering sense of loss in the listener. "Silence is Golden" casts a new light on a worn phrase. The song appears to be spoken from the perspective of an abuse victim who is angered by the paradoxical nature of her situation. The lyrics "If I am silent then I am not real/but if I speak up then no one will hear," are sung with the frustration that a fear of admittance can cause. The song is supported by Garbage's signature pounding guitar style that parallels Manson's ever-present strength. "Silence is Golden" successfully channels anger and frustration into a strong yet mournful cry challenging abuse. "Parade" is the album's crowning achievement. It is a powerful song that is unlike any Garbage thus far. Its vocals are effectively detached, and blend skillfully with the song's churning background. Individuality is its message, and the song recognizes the lack of it in today's society. "Beautiful Garbage" may be quite unlike Garbage's previous albums, but it offers a fresh and creative diversity that is uncommon amongst the usual waves of replica-pop. Garbage has always been an experimental band, and "Beautiful Garbage" is a creative step in a new direction.

Free Music Review: Garbage Go Pop!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of each of Garbage's previous albums up to now,but this album blew me away from the first moment I heard it in it's entirety. For starters the whole sound is quite a departure from many of the tracks Garbage had recorded previously.I had to give it several listens before I could truly decide if they have made a major step forward on this album-and after a month of constant listening I now believe this is definitely the best Garbage from Shirley and the boys yet.

The most notable thing on this album is just how instantly accessible it is.It is by far their most commercial album to date. It's full of poppy tunes-some that are almost candy sweet, yet they still manage to keep enough control to give them their fabulous harder edge. It's hard to believe listening to this that Butch Vig once worked with Nirvana! The most obvious examples of this are on tunes like "Androgyny"-it took me ages to figure out what the synths sound like and then one day it hit me-Ace Of Bass!!!-you see I told you it takes Garbage fans by surprise. Then if I thought that track had a surprising sound the next track was simply unbelievable.Track 3 "Can't Cry These Tears" is quite simply Garbage doing a song in the style of The Ronettes or The Crystals-it's a pure 60's pop song.If they release this single around Christmas time it's going to be their biggest hit. It's a really infectious hit and you'll be humming the chorus all day.But I do understand on the other hand why many fans absolutely hate it.Personally I think it's a great song.Pop of the "Cherry" kind reappear on track 7-this time it's a real 80's pop song, with Manson sounding like a very early Madonna. The lyrics and story behind this song are hysterically superb.Once again you hear the unusual sound of poppy Glockenspiel-for that extra commercial appeal. The 12th track can certainly be filed in the pop folder especially with it's lightweight chorus-full of synths and not a guitar to be heard.

There are plenty of louder heavier rock songs on this album. Each of these are excellent also-song 1 is a track that most fans will be truly familiar with.Distorted loud guitars used as a backdrop to some very hard hitting lyrics."Til The Day I Die"-is a great rocking song-a drumbeat that sounds very like Funky Cold Medina with lots of strong and very loud powerchords."Silence Is Golden" is an amazing song-gentle synthy sounding guitar riffs interact with a really loud, heavy powerchord-this song raises the volume substantially-yet it isn't a melody drowned out by a cacophany-even when the ultra loud bridge comes.

Some of my favourite songs on their previous albums have been the slower ones like Milk and You Look So Fine. There are two more classics on this c.d.The lyrics are full of the most touching sort of despair."Cup Of Coffee" is full of long synth chords and a haunting grand piano in the background telling the story of a gilr coping badly with the break up of her relationship."Drive You Home" relies more on a gentle guitar sound yet the lryics are even more touching then the last one-even the song is slightly damaged by the almost angellic cries in the chorus.

This is a truly fine album-I can't really find any bad tracks on the album-which is not something I could have said about their previous albums.I think it will be their most successful album to date-yeah Garbage do pop,but they do it superbly!

Free Music Review: Absolutely amazing!
Hit: 5 Stars

I personally think the 5 star rating is thrown around too much on Amazon.com, I think it should be used only for those albums which are exceptional, amazing and downright awesome... albums like this one.

Beautifulgarbage is without-a-doubt, hands-down, the BEST album of 2001, at least I think so. Garbage is so versatile, so creative, and that really shows on this album. They way they've taken different genres and added a touch of that wonderful Garbage sound, and still remained true to their sound and that of the genre amazes me.

Beautifulgarbage starts off with "Shut Your Mouth," a hardcore, in-your-face rocker which remains true to the Garbage sound.

We then are treated to Androgyny, the first single. This song has grown on me a lot, the bass line is amazing. Great studio stuff, right here.

This is when Garbage pulls a quick one with "Can't Cry These Tears Anymore." I personally think the song is gorgeous with it's bells and Shirleys amazing voice. Top notch.

"Till the Day I Die" is next. Garbage delves a little deeper into the pop region right here, and there's nothing wrong with that. The ending to this song absolutely rocks.

The album then flows into the dark yet beautiful "Cup Of Coffee." The lyrics are superb. One of my favorites. Not much more to say.

Since Garbage has toyed with the pop genre a bit thus far, they throw "Silence is Golden" at you. Ironically, this is the most hardcore, loudest and most abrasive track on the album. With it's rocking guitars and Shirley nearly screaming, it's DEFFINITELY one of the high points of the album.

"Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" is next. This song is so sweet it'll give you a toothache. Shirley swoons over electronic "80's ish" beats during the verses then the sound breaks into heavy guitars during the chorus. Fabulous!

My favorite is next, "Breaking Up the Girl." Where to begin? I love this song so much. The best on the album. I love the way Garbage has taken a dark subject and glossed it over with a more upbeat sound.

"Drive You Home" shows up next. People have referred to it as "boring" and "unoriginal." Excuse me? I think this is a great song. The chorus is beautiful (notice I've been using that word a lot lately?) with Shirley's voice flowing over every note.

Garbage keeps on going with "Parade." A very fast song, one of my favorites. Don't skip over this one.

"Nobody Loves You" is definitely the darkest song on the album. Can't you tell by the title? A stunning chorus and frightening, incohrent mumbles give this song it's edge.

We then reach the low-point of the album with "Untouchable." I personally don't like this song, but all the other great tunes make up for it. Not a bad song, just not as good as the others.

Beautifulgarbage ends with "So Like a Rose," a haunting ballad which is another of my favorites. The way Shirley moans at the end is stunning. Gorgeous with a doubt. The perfect way to end this astonishing album.

There you have it, Garbage has done it again, making themselves one of the best bands of our time. This is my second favorite album of thiers, their self titled debut being my favorite. It's even BETTER than this amazing piece of work.

Go out and buy this album now, you have no reason not to.
