I admit I had the same initial reaction most Garbage fans seemed to have had upon hearing this CD for the first time, namely, "what the hell???", but after giving it a chance and really just trying to absorb it, I've come to the conclusion that I like what I hear a great deal. Just as not all children look like their parents, this CD doesn't really resemble much of what's preceeded it, and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I love that Garbage has sent this latest child in another direction, sort of turning it loose to play and become something different from its siblings. It has a unique sound, but at the same time there's a lot about it that sounds familar, too, just maybe not what we've come to expect as familiar from Garbage. To my untrained ear, I hear everything from Chrissie Hynde in "Til the Day I Die" to Madonna (seriously, on "Cherry Lips" Shirley's voice reminds me a little bit of Madonna during her Marilyn Monroe phase...plus, there are ha-ha funny audio punctuations all through the song) to a subtle (or maybe not so subtle) slap at Britney and Christina in "Untouchable", in addition to tip-o'-the-hat references to the identifiable sounds of the '60's in "Can't Cry These Tears Anymore". I love "Breaking Up the Girl" because it reminds me of the '80's music I went to college on, and "Parade" because of the imagery it evokes ("the color of the night/the glory of a sudden view"), as well as it's jab at the pervasive apathy of modern/pop culture. "Shut Your Mouth" is quintessential Garbage, and "Androgyny" is in a class all its own. With the First Album and V2.0, I made a horribly embarrassing spectacle of myself in traffic by cranking the volume in my car on the way to work and home again, to the point I know I was offending someone somewhere around me, even with the windows up and the sunroof closed. I know I went into work reeking of music, the volume having been so extreme it forced the notes and words and chords and melodies into my clothes and hair, until it oozed out of me once I got someplace quiet. It's taken some time, but I do that now with Beautifulgarbage, too. It's not what I'm used to, but that's ok, because the music still makes me feel and think and fall in love with Shirley on every song. And gosh darnit, it makes me happy, too, even the sad songs, because at least the words are honest and real and painful. It makes me want to play hookey from work and life and just drive around making a fool of myself by listening loudly and singing along badly.
Good for Garbage for doing something so different and unexpected...may they always have the huevos to be inventive and free with their music. ...
Free Music Review: Garbage once again prove they are not Garbage Hit: 5 Stars
Being a big Garbage fan, this album was long anticipated for me. Although it was slightly different from what I expected, I was not disappointed. Beautiful Garbage contains a lot of things that Garbage has not done before, but it still retains that typical Garbage sound.1) Shut Your Mouth - a nice aggressive opener that could be straight off the previous album. But beware: this is not Version 2.0: Version 2.0 (if you follow me). 2) Androgyny - I'm sure everyone already knows this song, and they will either like it or hate it. 3) Can't Cry These Tears - this is the most experimental song on the album, so it's surprising it comes on so early in the album. Sounds almost Christmasy (what with all the bells and such), but the Garbage sound kicks in at the end. 4) Til the Day I Die - a funky little number which will get into your head and refuse to leave. Quite poppy, but with enough quirky studio effects to keep you happy. 5) Cup of Coffee - a soft number, reminiscent of 'You Look So Fine'. Again, nice song with enough studio effects to keep it from dragging. 6) Silence is Golden - the most heavy Garbage song recorded. This has no electronic effects (rare for garbage), just extremely heavy distorted guitars and powerful vocals from Shirley. 7) Cherry Lips - the most poppy Garbage song recorded. Almost entirely electronic, the sickly sweet vocals and catchy melodies serve almost to balance out the previous track. 8) Breaking up the Girl - a nice track, with sing-along vocals. Has the same happy-go-lucky feel as Cherry Lips. 9) Drive You Home - this is the most simple Garbage song I have heard. With almost no studio effects, it doesn't quite have that edge to it that Garbage normally have, but the haunting vocal line still makes it one of the most powerful songs on the album. 10) Parade - the fastest Garbage song recorded. Reminiscent of Version 2.0, this is a reminder that Garbage still know exactly what they're doing. 11) Nobody Loves You - this is very reminiscent of their first album. Starts with a highly charged riff that sounds like it's straight from a spy film, builds it up with live drums and distorted guitar, and then turns into dark trip-hop. Possibly the most complex song on the album, and will satisfy all the old Garbage fans. 12) Untouchable - Garbage take urban music, and do it much better. Very groovy, very listenable. 13) So Like a Rose - on their first two albums, the last track was quite a soft one. This is no exception, although So Like a Rose is by no means the softest on the album. It is more mellow, and very stirring.
Free Music Review: Yeah man... Five stars Hit: 5 Stars
Being one of my favorite albums, it's impossible to me give less than 5 stars to Beautifulgarbage. The first Garbage's album I bought was Version 2.0 and it made me adicted to their sound. Then I got Their debut and when this one was released, I was dying to hear what they have done.To tell the truth, I was perpletic when "Shut your mouth" began. Well... for me that wasn't Garbage. But ok, that was good. Then came Androginy, that I had already listened... and I hadn't liked. But, ok, I continued. "Can't cry these tears"... I looked at the album cover again, to see if that was really a Garbage cd. Yeah, was. And it followed with "Cup of coffee", "Silence is golden" and few others. I just remembered the Garbage I loved in "Parade" Yes, I was scared. I didn't listen to the album for a while... trying to absorve what happened. But I made it throught, and realized the gems that this album holds. Telling the truth, I just came to apreciate this album when I got more tolerant with music... around about one year ago. Than I realized the power and swing in "Shut you mouth", the magnific arrangement in "Androginy", the great momentum of "Can't cry these tears", the amazing energy in "Till the day I die". Then came two songs that changed my life, at least in some aspects. First, "Cup of coffee", with it's superb lyrics (very depressive) and fenomenal goth arrangement. Then, "Silence is golden", my greatest fave in Garbage's repertory. Powerful and fragile at the same time, if it's possible. Then, came two funny songs that I don't care too much, but like to hear because they're catchy as hell. Then comes "Drive you home", another sad song with great lyrics and musicianship, "Parade", your great enjoy-it-all-and-try-not-to-dance-and-shout Garbage song, and then comes "Nobody loves you", also sad, but disturbing and also eerie. Three GREAT songs. Then comes "Untocheables", that I don't care about and the amazing/epic/surreal/eerie/genial ending, "So like a rose". I can't say about this with words, but is amazing. Relaxing, pure geniality. Well, this album is very important to me. I decided to write a book basing in the lyrics of this gem. The book is based in these lyrics and also in the album "The Downward Spiral", by Nine Inch Nails. But you gotta assume, if it made me write a book... well, it may be powerful. If you're not worried about it, just listen to the music. No, listen to the songs. This album is made of songs, and each one is very diferent of the other. It's kinda lots of albums in one only ganial piece. A five stars piece of work.
Free Music Review: The best Garbage ever! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the only "garbage" we'll ever let lay araound the house! I love the album, and imagine... I actually hesitated to buy it! But when I put it on at home, Beautiful garbage put me in the mood right away.Call me a Drama-Queen reviewer on certain cds, but I do like "Beautiful Garbage" a lot. Since buying it, we must have played it right through about 30 times. And...my most favourite song is (Cup of Coffee). All 13 tracks are great and in no way was this album made in a day, or poorly produced. I read a review which truly doesn't fit this cd at all. Totally negative and TOO critical. Yes, I know that is what reviews pages are for! This review is about what I feel and what I feel is that I got my money's worth when buying this cd. From the beginning to the end, the songs just pulled me into them. I love the drama of (Cup of coffee). This dark and depressing song balances the first part of the cd perfectly. (Shut your mouth) is excellent and it is one of the coolest songs to put at the beginning of any cd. I didn't mind the harshness of it at all. (Can't cry these tears) is so retro and it seems to work almost perfectly as a track for the 70's "Grease" soundtrack. At least that was my first thought of the song! (Til the Day I Die) makes Shirley sound a bit like Miss Piggy in her little voice (til the day i die). I love the unevenness of the song and its originality. (Cherry lips (Go baby go) is cute, and like no other song that Garbage has produced ever. I was amazed at how versatile Shirley Manson's voice is, and how well this band can produce together. The last song (So Like a Rose) is beautiful and it is also so different to the pure alternative material we've heard from the band in their previous albums. The track list: 1-Shut Your Mouth 2-Androgyny 3-Can't Cry These Tears 4-Til the Day I Die 5-Cup of Coffee 6-Silence is Golden 7-Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go) 8-Breaking up the Girl 9-Drive You Home 10-Parade 11-Nobody Loves You 12-Untouchable 13-So Like a Rose 14-Plus Enhanced element beautifulgarbage mixer When I opened up the liner-note booklet, there were no pictures to be found. I did find it quite convenient to be able to follow all the lyrics so clearly and attractively written. The one page of photos looks cool inside the cd tray, and at least it won't get dog-eared and dirty. Boy has Shirley changed too! She is much prettier than before, not to mention her voice. Way to go Shirl! Get the cd and you'll agree it was worth the money.
Free Music Review: Garbage has never sounded more beautiful. Hit: 5 Stars
It's so sad that some people bash this album because it doesn't sound like the other two albums. If you want an album that sounds like "Version 2.0" then go listen to "Version 2.0". What would Shirley and the boys gain from re-hashing old sounds and topics? Absolutely nothing. I love bands that don't do the same thing twice. I think it's more than necessary for a band to experiment with different sounds and (more importantly) be able to do it well. "BeautifulGarbage" is a pop album. Yes. But Garbage has always made pop music, no matter how much you old school Garbage fans try to deny it. Garbage makes good pop music. There's nothing wrong with that. I love this CD. I think it's Garbage's best album. What I love the most about this CD is that there is darkness underneath the pop exterior. For example, "Cherry Lips" is NOT about "some girl who likes to party" like some people (who obviously didn't pay attention to the lyrics) think it's about. "You're such a delicate BOY" isn't referring to a girl, now is it? The song is based on J.T. Leroy's "Sarah," a book about a young boy who has to cross dress and sell his body for money. "Untouchable" seems like a mindless song at first listen, but after paying close attention, one will notice the venomous lyrics that are in the same vein as "As Heaven Is Wide" from Garbage's first album. There are no low points on this album. Every song is different, unique, and beautifully crafted. "Shut Your Mouth" and "Til The Day I Die" are packed with a great rock-n-roll energy. "Can't Cry These Tears" is a wonderful `60s style song that will make you want to do your hair up in a stylish beehive and go out and buy some cute go-go boots. "Silence Is Golden" (ironically the loudest song on the CD) is a song about angst and reclusiveness. "Parade" and "Breaking Up the Girl" are the only songs that come close to Garbage's old sound. Garbage really shines on the slower songs. "Cup of Coffee" is a beautifully orchestrated song about obsession. "Drive You Home" is my personal favorite. It's the perfect song to play when you are feeling so tired and depressed. Shirley has never sounded more melancholy. Another favorite of mine is "Nobody Loves You". It's a Portishead-esque trip-hop song. Shirley gives her best vocal performance ever in the last minute of this song. "So Like a Rose" has a peaceful, soothing, and ethereal feel to it. This album couldn't have ended any other way. "BeautifulGarbage" is definitely a must-have for anyone who appreciates great, diverse music.
