Free Music Notes for Beautiful GarbageFree Music Review: buetuful Garbage is a good album Hit: 5 Stars
Holed up in the studio, watching Butch Vig, Uncle Fester and the third one fiddling with their knobs and wires, Shirley Manson passed time by posting ill-tempered missives on the band's official Web site. One of the grumpier notes was about Radiohead's plunge into the icy waters of post-rock, which she reckoned sounded "fake": "They don't sound like they're doing what comes naturally. It sounds too forced."
Unfortunately, there's no way of telling if these lines were accompanied by an ironic smirk, because forced and fake are epithets that cling to the Garbage franchise like barnacles on a deluxe speed cruiser. Indeed, the opening track on beautifulgarbage sounds like the case for the prosecution - "We know your music but of course we never buy it/It's too fake, man." The name of this song? "Shut Your Mouth." But of course.
Garbage's plan is to silence the naysayers by smashing open the band's techno-angst formula. The lovely "Drive You Home" sees Manson sighing plaintively over an acoustic guitar, a song that echoes Big Star's mildly mawkish "Thirteen." "Til the Day I Die" oozes sex and P-Funk licks as Manson croons in an hilarious falsetto. Best of all is the giddy indie-disco of "Parade," which sounds like New Order getting their groove back.
But the Garbage machine doesn't always function so pristinely. "Can't Cry These Tears" is a Blondie-ish Phil Spector pastiche, as sickly sweet as a vat of cotton candy. Even more flawed are their attempts to co-opt some R&B flourishes; "Untouchable" is plain bizarre, like Missy Elliott being covered by a bunch of car-assembly robots.
One thing you can't fault, though, is Garbage's vaulting ambition, an admirable quality in a rock landscape dominated by pygmies. Their version 3.0 might arrive with a few flaws, but it becomes more user-friendly with each listen
Free Music Review: DIFFERENT, but not a change for the worst Hit: 5 Stars
Well...when I have been a garbage fan since Version 2.0 became one of my favorite cds and their first one was really good too, and what I loved about their first 2 cds was that they had an edge to them. Now, when I first listenend to this album I was at a loss for words. Not because it was so bad, but not because it was really good, either. It was more of a state of shock. It was so different! I knew it would be after already seeing the video for Androgyny, but nothing could have prepared me for it. However, now that I know what to expect I find myself wanting to listen to this album all the time, it is very good. I find that all the songs are really exceptional, even though they are very very different. Androgyny is almost similar to past Garbage albums, but not as hard. Shut Your Mouth, though, is hard and one of the best songs on here. Another great song (possibly the best on here) is Breaking Up The Girl, even though it is not really hard. It is Garbage at their best. Parade is also really good, along with Silence is Golden, because it is hard and has an edge to it that some of the other songs seem to be missing. The only really bad song on here is Cherry Lips, it so awful, it's like Britney Spears material and that is SO not Shirley's thing, she should stick to the hard edgy and innovative music she is good at. So, this album is definitely worth buying, but not if you're expecting another Version 2.0, because the band is obviously moving in a complete opposite direction from that without losing their style. The music is much more "complete" sonically, while the lyrics are not bad, but still like i said, different. To all you Garbage fans out there who somehow did not get this album yet, buy it now! To everyone else, buy it too, it is definitely on par with their last two albums, and that says a lot.
Free Music Review: Not always appreciated, but this sure is amazing... Hit: 5 Stars
Garbage was one of the greatest alternative bands of the 90's, and is one of my top ten favorite bands of all-time. The blend of electronic, pop, and rock has always really connected with me. While the first two albums had more standout singles and I still prefer "Version 2.0" to this (there's not much I don't), it is an excellent release.
I've recently found myself listening to this one more lately. I don't know how people could possibly dismiss an album with the song "Cup of Coffee" on it. It's beautiful, heartbreaking, etc, and arguably the greatest song they have ever made. I also like the use of more orchestrated pop songs on the album, just like in that song. It has an interesting variety and never lacks in melody. It takes time to fully appreciate and I think it's totally worth it. My next favorite after that song is "Nobody Loves You", which nicely mixes acoustic guitar with trippy electronics. I like the synths and hip-hop beat of "Androgyny", and that theme goes on through a song like "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)", an unbashedly 80's tune. To me, this album is as truly Garbage as the first two albums. The album has a lot of really great lyrics, one of the things that makes the album so strong.
Also, if you're longing for the harder alternative tunes, this album does deliver some of those, like in the spoken-word "Shut Your Mouth" and the bass-heavy "Silence is Golden." I can't believe how good this sounds. To me, giving a raw, unproduced sound wouldn't have worked as well for a band like Garbage.
It unfortunately is the one that gets most flack, but boy are people missing out. It might not be for everybody, however I think you should be more open-minded when checking out a release like this. Just because they aren't trying to re-live their glory days doesn't make it ungood.
Free Music Review: Go Baby Go! Were RIGHT behind you! Hit: 5 Stars
I anticipated this album so seriously that it seemed weirdly consuming as the time drew near for the release date. After the rush of whipping out that Visa Card to speed home and place this disc in the tray of my holy CD player MOST securely (occasionally it swallows CDs, Moby and No Doubt are in there SOMEWHERE!) I was just stunned from the opening chords to the closing breath. In my list of top 10 favorite discs of all time V2.0 just got shoved, no make that BOOTED, out of the number one slot. Each song perfectly placed to enhance the experience of the next, production so precise and razor sharp that it hurts SO good, songs that kick and cry and moan and tease...and indeed our velvety voiced Shirley has never sounded better. Lyrically, again we have poetry with an edge and a Garbage style wink. As always, while we can think we understand every nuance lyrically, we still get a wink of double entrendee at times which is such a trademark of this most clever of bands. Musically it will take you away in a wave of sound perhaps a bit less cluttered than previous efforts (there is a definite feel to a past Garbage yard sale here on clutches of unidentifiable sounds layered one on the other), but make no mistake...this collection of songs wears its heart smack on its sleeve...it has a sophisticated yet pure feel that every band may strive for, but only the most accomplished can deliver. This is a brave and thoroughly evolved collection from a band that promises surprises and delivers them with a cherry on top. Do not purchase this thinking G or V2.0...purchase this thinking what the heck will they think of next....and then open your mind to a beautiful trip! Silence may be Golden, but BeautifulGarbage is priceless. A masterpiece...without a doubt.
Free Music Review: The title says it all. Hit: 5 Stars
I am going to admit that, like most fans, I was slightly disappointed at 1st few listens..I have listened to it about 15 times since then however and have decided this is a great album..I see absolutely nothing wrong with Garbage's need to experiment a bit..Let's look at the 1st two albums..I mean the 1st one was a more poppy and produced version of what Curve has been doing for years before them..Version 2.0 was exactly what its title suggests: An updated version of the 1st album..That having been said, imagine if they had made their 3rd album an updated version of the 1st two..We would've had Version 3.0..Honestly if you long for Version 3.0, then I recommend downloading all the b-sides from the 1st two albums.. This album is diverse and derivitive at times..if this album were made by any other artist, reviewers would've given it 5 stars..One of the most unfortunate things that comes along with being a progressive band these days is a stigma..I think this is a great album..There's something for everyone on here..Tracks 1,4,6,8,10 and 12 could've easily been on the 1st two albums..track 2 sounds like TLC remixed by Garbage and more fun..tracks 3 and 7 pay hommage to the girl groups of the 60's..Then we have the ballads tracks 5,9,11 and 13..If you really listen to them they are all beautiful and heartbreaking..Shirley's lyrics and voice have improved considerably over the years.. ...Some of my favourite albums took a few listens..Most albums that are immediately catchy and easy to listen to will usually become boring alot quicker than the ones that take a few listens.. Everytime I listen to this album I've found something great about it..it gets closer to being my choice for album of the year with every listen..give it a chance..
