Free Music Review: Garbage is back in Bleed Like Me.
Hit: 5 Stars

Garbage is back. I was a little worried about Bleed Like Me because, their last album, I felt was a bust, relative to their two prior albums. When I listened to the tracks on this album, I was truly blown away. Garbage sounds like a really tight band, even after their breakup they had for a while. Shirley Manson's vocals are great. The band is tight. They mesh so well together, just like the Garbage everyone knew before.

1.Bad Boyfriend (3:46): this song did not initially catch my from my first run through of the album. This song though is very edgy and has great electric guitar layered upon percussion. Originally I did not feel that the melody to the song was catchy. Listening to this track several times did have its affect.
"So ripe so sweet come suck it on see" 3.5/5

2.Run Baby Run (4:01): Great song. I really like the guitar riff. It has its own melody amongst the layers of other instrumentation. A song about love, looking at it from a third perspective. Great melody and great rhythm!
"Love's an elusive charm and it can harm you" 5/5

3.Right Between the Eyes (3:56): this song has a nice guitar riff with a steady beat. The vocals are great. I really enjoy the harmonies with Shirley's lead. Song about empowerment, not listening to what others have to think.
"It's true, it's a cruel, cruel world" 5/5

4.Why Do you love me (3:54): is the first single off of the album. Great song. Reminds me of her older tracks from past album. Nice heavy guitar and drum combination.
"I'm no Barbie doll, I'm not your baby girl" 5/5

5.Bleed Like me (4:01): the verses in this song are slow, but in between are faster tempo instrumentation. I really like the verses because it just feels really intimate. This is a narration song. Nice horn instrumentation.
"Therapy is Speedie's brand new drug" 4/5.

6.Metal Heart (3:59): The song starts off with little instrumentation, and then slowly integrates them into more melodies. This song was one that caught my attention from the first listen through. Great chorus-good melody.
"I want to be courageous and good" 5/5

7.Sex is not the Enemy (3:06): is a nice fun track. Great guitar riffs and heavy percussion. The song is great. Melody, everything is well done.
"A revolution is the solution..I believe love is free" 5/5.

8.It's all Over but the Crying (4:39): is my favorite track off the CD. This song is a slow tempo song, but with great percussion. It kind of reminds me of "stroke of luck" or "trick is to keep breathing" but has its own uniqueness. I really lover her vocals in this track. This song is about a break up.
"Fade to black, I'm sick of trying" 5/5

9.Boys wanna fight (4:16): this song has a nice guitar riff. This song is one of the catchy song off this album. I really love the bridge in the song. It just brings you back to college and stuff. Great melody that accompanies the vocals.
"Let's get loaded" 5/5

10.Why don't you come over (3:25): This song is one of my least favorite tracks off the album. I just feel that the melody isn't catchy enough for my taste, but don't judge it because I felt this way. I just felt the chorus was cheap. This song is a fast pace, with good guitar riffs.
"so why don't you come over" 2/5

11.Happy Home (6:00): this song was also one that caught me off guard initially because it was very good. It is very intimate, in terms of Shirley and vocals. The instrumentation doesn't distort her vocals and you hear her for her. But don't get me wrong, intermissions are some rock riffs.
"In my happy home, I read the science" 5/5

I am so happy Garbage has come back with a very rock solid album after their long absence from the music industry. I felt that they have worked really hard to get where they are currently-producing good music that they have once before done. Don't worry about the parental advisory label, I didn't feel that it contain explicitly bad words. Maybe just the B word and some sexually implied lyrics, but other than that nothing to stray from, if that was the case. Great music. This is what I call real alternative music. Don't expect kiddy rock that you hear on mainstream station, they total are true to their roots.

Free Music Review: A bittersweet CD--they bled and got strong for it!
Hit: 5 Stars

Some will say that Garbage hasn't matured but instead put out a long awaited album that is somehow lacking-or just too much of the same with all those sounds of the 1990's. There's no doubt, however, the 90's elements on this album are good and work as part of Garbage's typical style. (I think Garbage did tone down some of the electronica effects and elements that have been part of their trademark.) Maybe there's some truth to this-and maybe not. But there's no escaping THIS truth-this album REALLY rocks hard! It's an exciting, strong, straight ahead smack in your face set of song tracks leaving you wanting more! To start off with, the first several songs on this CD are the best nonstop, unrelenting run of recorded guitar-crunching Garbage work since the best parts of their self titled CD debut ten years ago! The intensity and elements of the stunning guitar work in the three songs "Bad Boyfriend," "Right Between the Eyes" and "Why Do You Love Me" leave no doubt that these guys have proven that despite all the band's recent problems they can still make crackin' hot music! "Bad Boyfriend" also features Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters fame on drums.

There's no shortage of honesty and emotion in the lyrics, either. Shirley Manson, the Scottish singer, does her usual job of singing awesomely; she also plays electric guitar on this album. Some say Manson sounds at times like PJ Harvey; she can be a quite the versatile performer! What's more, the songs are full of blunt, awesome in-your-face tough lyrics such as "I know some tricks I swear will give you the bends" and "If you can't love me, honey/Go on, just pretend." I love the effect this all gives you! Obviously Manson and the others in Garbage don't play games when it comes to truly sharing their feelings. I think Manson's own pain over her breakup with her husband is something she channels into her songs about emotional torment. These situations are so real to us too because inevitably so many of us experience these feelings sooner or later.

I especially liked the track "Run Baby Run" and the empowering, almost sacred song "Right Between the Eyes." Then there's the song "Bleed Like Me." This one is fierce, rockin' with raw emotion-excellent musical work! (The band says that the song "Bleed Like Me" was inspired by the movie Thirteen.) There's also the scorching hot song called "Why Don't You Come Over," with its references to Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" and Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It." Incredible stuff! All in all, the CD is bold and strong, yet more than honest enough to expose some human vulnerability in the relationships we all go through.

The band works well together on this CD. Despite a few problems--including a serious break between drummer-guitarist Butch Vig and the band--they pull this CD off really rather well. It all makes for some really good listening. Look for Steve Marker on both electric and acoustic guitars, synthesizers, laptop, programming, and noises! Steve even does bass overdubs on "Bad Boyfriend" and "Metal Heart." Another major contributor is Duke Erikson who also plays both electric and acoustic guitars, works with synthesizers, programming, and atmospherics, too! Duke also works the mellotron and plays piano on the ballad "It's All Over But The Crying" and "Happy Home." Among other things Vig (who worked so hard on Nirvana's Nevermind) plays electric guitar, drums, and bass on the song "Bleed Like Me." Justin Medal-Johnson plays bass also and Matt Walker plays drums on several of the tracks here.

"Happy Home" seems to work pretty well in its place at the end of the album; this song is a somewhat painful yet beautiful track about independence and what is yet to come. Yes, I would agree with others who write that the end portion of the album has a slightly different feel to it; but really it's still very good stuff.

Hey, look-this band is ROCKIN'! Bleed Like Me is really a rather good album proving once again their numerous talents-it's a great addition to any solid rock/alternative rock collection!

Free Music Review: It's All Over But Garbage
Hit: 5 Stars

We tend to have a taste for a soufflé at one time or the other. On a different day, it might be a delicious treat of tiramisu. Sometimes, a nice hot cup of black coffee would do nicely.

Over the years, Garbage has gone through a metamorphism and they now find themselves right back where they began, minus the synth distortion and added electronic glam. At least they have now channeled their soul into the vibrations and grit of the axe, thus giving that synth which was so violently raped and teased on "Version 2.0" a back seat ride.

We've tasted a different soufflé with "Beautiful Garbage", an album where they tried to emulate their success which came with the breakthrough "Version 2.0". A CD lusciously filled with many gems like "Parade", "Silence Is Golden", "Cherry Lips" as well as many others, "Beautiful Garbage" shone like a prostitute's lip gloss. Tragically, it seemed that their divine efforts didn't really pay off with "Beautiful Garbage". It isn't a weak album by far in any form or manner, but it is hard to please the masses. So hard; but they will keep on pushing.

So, give them a lease of four years, sprinkle some tragedy amongst their lives, couple it with Shirley's emotional loss as well as nearly her sensual voice, and what you'd get is "Bleed Like Me".

Upon your first listen, you will notice that a simple underscore of the album is most of the guitar riffs tend to sound alike, if not blending into one major song. If sanity still allows you to breathe thereafter, have a second listen and delve into the lyrics of the blood spilt, you will discover that this CD contains eleven hell spawned angels waiting to take flight. Though Shirley thrives in contempt, contempt isn't what the doctor ordered here. What you hear is what you get, and what you have here, is the end result of lives hit by pain, sadness and doubt. Eleven well crafted tracks which deserve to be right up there in that sluttish Hall of Fame with any other Garbage's release.

This review would go on forever if I had to review every single track, so I shall pick them randomly.

"Bleed Like Me" opened up her legs to a "Bad Boyfriend" first. A simple process; guitar comes in first followed by Shirley's voice, then the whole shebang of bass and drums with Grohl on the sticks. While you are dancing around and shaking off your sins to this track, you will begin to understand that this album isn't about cherry lips or go-baby-go-go's anymore, brace yourself for a darker ride. Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker would assure you of that.

Garbage was never one to mince their words, so "Bleed Like Me (the single)" is no exception either. Touching on issues like cutting, cross genders and depression, this track is one major irony with its rather cheery hooks. "It Is All Over But The Crying", well, this track can eventually shred you. So if you are blue, or disjointed, or sad, or recently out of love, you won't find another more perfect song for the occasion. One of my personal favorite is "Boys Wanna Fight". What appealed to me about this song is the technique of applying an 'out of phase' voice, it works so damn well with Shirley especially so on the first verse. She sounds ultra sexy and sensual on this, with a touch of angst. An immensely great track for grooving, and let the girls be happy just to dance all night.

Shirley has this unnerving tenacity to manipulate her voice for rock beats as well as down tempo rhythms. She does it so amazingly well here with the entire album. Garbage has once more proven that they are, or never will be just MTV fodder but a dark fearsome force to be reckoned with. There can't be anybody else.

You should see her scars.

Free Music Review: Review: Bleed Like Me
Hit: 5 Stars

It's rare for a band to come along that has a unique sound. Garbage was one such band many years ago. Their Garbage 2.0 is just as fresh today as they day it came out. Yes, we all suffered through Beautiful Garbage, but all bands have a CD where they try new things.
Bleed Like Me take Garbage back to what made them different in the first place. Garbage has such a unique sound that it is incorrect to call them a Rock n Roll band. We should just stop right here and call it something that no one else is doing. They play "Garbage Rock." When a band plays something that is very different, it usually stands the test of time. People will be playing Garbage music long after we are gone.
Bleed Like Me is tight. It is Garbage refined. Purely tested, knuckle dragging hell in the studio hard core genius. Shirley Manson has more emotion on this CD than in the past. Pain and tragedy always brings out the best in bands, but we won't go there. We've all read the stories, but that's personal and we only get to enjoy the music and hope the best for all band and contributing artists on this CD.
Bad Boyfriend introduces us back to the Garbage we have missed and always loved. This is a subtle Garbage coy to bring us in. Garbage has their usually surprise waiting for us. This just wets our appetite for more. Go ahead listen. The guitars are clean, tight and sure on this track.
Run Baby Run begins with a simple guitar playing. Garbage makes it sound so easy. One guitar and then the drums come in and it all works so well.
Shirley belts out an anthem of how hard things can be in life up front and personal. Her vocals have gotten better over the years and she is at the top of her game now.
OK. Get ready for the best song on a CD in the last ten years. Put that seat belt on real tight as Garbage takes you for a ride. Right Between the Eyes is Garbage at its ultimate best. Garbage puts rock in your face, kicks your ass and takes your name. The song pulls you in and then spits you out at the end. The drums are just perfection. The power of the band members was all worth the effort. This is Garbage's best song ever. This one song will make Garbage live forever. Garbage speaks to everyone with this song. So many people being slammed by someone else out there and so many other people who don't care or laugh when you are down. Such an uplifting song speaks volumes to people around the world.
Metal Heart has just the right mix of tecno sound. They got it right on this one.
Sex Is Not the Enemy is one of those songs where you hear Shirley's voice and just plain get excited. There are many people out there that can sing. That's great, but they have no depth, no range. Shirley has so much range that she can project the sound and the feeling at the same time; a feat not accomplished by many young singers today. Shirley gets it.
It's All Over but The Crying is another song that could be used by anyone that is just about to lose someone. This is such a great song. If you get past the sadness, the song has perfect pitch and balance. The sound has been refined into a very clean, tight machine. Pure magic.
Boys Wanna Fight begins as a very ruff sounding track, but the band cuts in and you're off for another roller coaster Garbage rock ride. I want to go again!
Why Don't You Come Over shows that just when you think the ride is over, Garbage is ready to dish out more pure power.
If you've been waiting for an album to come out worth its weight in rock, run don't walk to your local record shop and get this one. You won't be disappointed. This is one of those CDs that will be played for years to come.
Every generation has its musical heroes. Thank God we have Garbage.

Free Music Review: They've come full circle
Hit: 5 Stars

Drummer/producer/music legend Butch Vig recently said in an interview how Garbage was surprised that their new single "Why Do You Love Me" had become such a big hit and that it felt like things have come full circle since 1995 again. And that "full circle" sentiment can apply to not only the current revival of GOOD alternative music, but to Garbage's excellent new album, Bleed Like Me.

The first thing to say is, if you LOVED the debut and Version 2.0, there is NO WAY you will be let down by this one, regardless of how you felt about beautifulgarbage. Garbage have gone back to what makes them a great and distinctive band: great hooks, killer riffs, and an awesome blend of rock, electronica, and pop. But this is not the merely a rehash of the Garbage that you heard in 1995 or 1998, this is a band that has evolved into something that transcends categorization. By losing some of the slick, studio polish and electronic effects, Garbage have proved that they can actually WRITE and PLAY amazing songs, and not just gloss them over with amazing production values.

The highlights of this album are many and close between. Right away, you are welcomed into Garbage's 2005 with "Bad Boyfriend", a Yeah Yeah Yeahs-esque romp with a S&M undercurrent running throughout. Dave Grohl's drumming and Shirley's sexually ferocious vocals make it an instant keeper, an opener on par with "Supervixen" on the original classic debut album of 1995. "Run Baby Run" is next and immediately you know you are listening to the big pop/rock crossover hit of 2005 (should it be released as a single, which it most definitely should). With an anthematic, guitar-swooning chorus worthy of the Cure and run-to-save-yourself message, it sets the urgent tone of the album. "Right Between The Eyes" is a solid Pretenders salute, and should please fans of "Special" from the glorious Version 2.0. "Why Do You Love Me", the best comeback single in years, follows and is worth the price of the album alone. It actually sounds more layered on album that on the radio and TV. Definitely a "Best Rock Song" contender. The heartbreaking soon-to-be-second single "Bleed Like Me" is track #5 and provides the rawest, most controversial moment of the album as Shirley sings of the doomed lives of not-so-fictional characters with names like Avalanche and Doodle. The self-mutilation theme and references to transgenders and drug addicts probably is what earns the album it's Parental Advisory label (which is silly) but don't be surprised if this song emerges as a favorite among concert fans and commercial radio alike. "Metal Heart" is a more industrial "Hammering In My Head" and "Sex Is Not The Enemy" is the "Cherry Lips" of this album, in it's obvious potential as an anthem AND it's sexual politics. The true highlight of this album is the heartbreakingly tender and beautiful "It's All Over But The Crying"...a ballad that now surpasses "You Look So Fine" as the band's best. After that album-defining ballad, electroclash "Boys Wanna Fight" and silly but cool "Why Don't You Come Over" provide some carefree danceable fare. The album ends though, with another highlight: the epic ballad "Happy Home" which in Garbage tradition, closes the album in a crescendo of heavenly guitars. Shirley's haunting delivery and the mercurial chorus, which consists of "ahhhh" sung repeatedly to great effect, bring this great album to a climax and brings a head it's desperate yet hopeful mood perfectly.

This is a terrific album. It doesn't matter if you are a decade-old fan or never heard of this group before: buy this gem today.
