Free Music Review: Garbage is finally back
Hit: 5 Stars

After the slight disappointment of their 2001 album, "BeautifulGarbage", Garbage is back! For this album, the band decided to ditch the poppy aspect of their third album and the electronica aspect of their second album, returning to a more guitar-driven sound reminiscent of their debut album.

-Bleed Like Me kicks off with "Bad Boyfriend", featuring Dave Grohl of Nirvana & Foo Fighters fame on drums. The guitars are roaring and Shirley Manson sounds as coy as ever, but it seems a little subdued. One of the weaker cuts on the album.
-"Run Baby Run" is stronger. The verses are sparse and beautiful, and the chorus is explosive and hooky. A definate single candidate.
-"Right Between The Eyes" is a bit more poppy - it sounds like a harder version of "Parade" off of BeautifulGarbage. The lyrics are among the best on the album and the song closes off with Shirley wailing "stay alive, my love" in a Bono-esque way.
-"Why Do You Love Me" is the hard rocking first single. As a single it does its purpose, but the chorus gets a little old after a while.
-"Bleed Like Me", the title track, is probably the weakest track. It's interesting - the lyrics are certainly different - but it lacks venom.
-"Metal Heart" is awesome - the lyrics are politically charged and the guitars are loud here.
-"Sex Is Not The Enemey" is the 'fun' song of the album. It's straight-ahead pop/rock. Another single candidate.
-"It's All Over But The Crying" is a somber piano ballad, and it's beautiful. You can hear the pain in Shirley's voice.
-"Boys Wanna Fight" is among my favorite. It's loud, rocking, and urgent sounding. Another political track.
-"Why Don't You Come Over" is probably the most...'different' track on the record. Doesn't mean its bad though. It's energetic and full of anger. Great song. The guitars sound awesome on this song.
-"Happy Home" is by far the best ballad on the album. It's a bittersweet tune, that goes from quiet and sad one moment to loud another. Garbage's best ballad since the classic "You Look So Fine" off their second album.

Bleed Like Me could be Garbage's best album. It certainly is their most consistent. Also, I'd have to say that the second half of the album is superior to the first. Overall an amazing record, one I definitely recommend.

Free Music Review: Garbage Comes Full Circle
Hit: 5 Stars

To explain why I love this album so much, I should probably go into a bit more detail of my history with Garbage's music. I was the biggest fan for the original CD, and thought it was the PERFECT blend of rock and grrl music. Version 2.0 was good, but almost too-smooth. Beautiful Garbage I didn't care for much at all, and was terribly disappointed.

Fast forward a few years and I've picked up the newest take from Garbage, Bleed Like Me. The first listen-through was disappointing (except perhaps 'Why Do You Love Me' which stuck in my head even then). I thought the entire thing was repetitive, boring, and worse than Beautiful Garbage.

Then I listened to it a few more times. And a few more. Right now I carry the CD with me everywhere so I can listen to it in the car, at home, on the computer, etc.

I love it.

It's not for everyone, I imagine. For those that love the slicker, electronica-based Garbage that was prevalent in Beautiful Garbage and V2, you might find this album distasteful, but for the fans that loved the hard, edgy sound of the first album, you'll find this one a welcome return to their roots. There's a lot of guitar and trash-electronic (for lack of a better word) sounds, all accompanied by Shirley's lazy, slow, soothing voice.

Tracks that stick out in my mind: 'Run Baby Run' is a lot of fun, 'Why Do You Love Me' is perfect as the new single, an edgy, catchy sound. 'Bleed Like Me' and 'It's All Over But the Crying' are a bit of a slower turn, and I don't know which I'm more mesmerized by: Shirley's voice or the lyrics themselves. I won't go into a long detailed list of each track, since I find those rather subjective. There's not a track on the album that I find myself skipping, however, so I consider that a success.

After previous disappointments, I find myself extremely pleased with the new Garbage album, though it took a few listens to have it grow on me. For those that panned the album, I suggest you listen to it again and see if you still hate it.

Garbage is back. Here's hoping they keep the edge.

Free Music Review: It'll Make You 'Bleed Like Me'
Hit: 5 Stars

As i've said in my reviews of Garbages 3 previous albums, each album is different. But once again Garbage has thrown a curve ball to the music world. First off, how in the world can a band that barely gets along work together so well? Answer: They do it for the love of music and for the fans.

With "Bleed Like Me" Garbage doesn't really break any new ground. Gone is the industrial feel, that started with '2.o' and gone is the slightly kid friendly techno pop of "Beautifulgarbage". And back with the sound that started Garbage; good old fashioned hard rock. But wait, listen closely. "Bleed Like Me" is like an album of healed wounds that have reopened and bled onto each other. The angst of their first album; the pain and suffering of 'Version 2.0' and the confusion of 'Beautifulgarbage' all bleed together to make the quinicential album for garbage.

From the opening guitar riffs and heavy drums (supplied by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters) on 'Bad Boyfriend' to the hard rocking yet melencholy bass on both 'Run Baby Run' and 'Right between the Eyes' to the hard hitting anger behind 'Why do you love me' we are treated to a perfect blend of all the sounds that garbage has brought us before. In 'Bleed like Me' we get a feel of 'Fix Me Now' mixed with 'So Like A Rose' and 'Metal Heart' hits back to the feel of a non album song '#1 Crush' then to my favorites song 'Sex is not the Enemy' which is really a teen angst song.

And we are still treated to the morbid and slower passed album finisher. On "Bleed Like me' it is a prayer for sanity in 'Happy Home' not as deep as 'So like a rose' or 'milk' and more angry that 'you look so fine'.

Garbage hasn't broken any new ground, but has given us fans a treat by revisiting and reimagining their previous music with a little more of a goth rock flair.

This is Garbage you don't want to throw away

No real surprises on CD number 4 from Garbage; `Bleed like me'. Straight ahead, unabashed, in your face, catchy rock songs, but with a noticeably harder edge than the previous 3. Doesn't break new ground but we get great songs with killer hooks, still laced with electronic effects and static.

The uptempo songs follow the Garbage template; a gentle intro that builds to a loud, rocking, catchy chorus. Standouts are `Run baby run', the frenetic punk rocker `Why do you love me' (with loud guitars at the start), `Bleed like me' (with its eerie sounding effects), `Metal heart' (alternating from delicate strings to hard beats and guitars), `Sex is not the enemy' (with Manson's vocals pushed back in the mix during the gentle verses, and coming to the fore during the raging chorus), the jerky distorted sound of the Blondie channeling `Boys wanna fight' and `Why don't you come over'.

My favourites are the ballads. I have always loved Garbage's ballads; `You look so fine', from `Version 2.0' and the forlorn `Cup of coffee' from `BeautifulGarbage' (one of the saddest, yet most beautiful break up songs ever!). In a similar vein to the latter, musically and lyrically is the tender `It's all over but the crying' with its beautiful piano intro that gradually builds up to a rocky climax. However, unlike `Cup of coffee' where the guy leaves her, this time, she gets to tell the guy `It's all over but the crying/baby we're done'.

`Happy home' is another beautiful ballad, beginning with Shirley's delicate vocals and a throbbing (U2-like) guitar backdrop, leading to a rocky chorus, a break in the music and a great throbbing guitar/percussion outro. Fantastic!

Like I said, no surprises, just a bleeding great CD.

Free Music Review: YES YES YES! Their best CD yet.
Hit: 5 Stars

Usually, when I buy a CD, I really like two or three songs on it, then "grow" to like the other ones. VERY rarely do I actually walk away with not one, not two, but almost ALL the songs on the CD going through my head.

Of course, that's the case with this dark little beauty. I love almost every song on it, with the exception of one or maybe two. And even those ones aren't bad.

The title song, "Bleed Like Me", is like a sugar-coated festering sore. The tempo is upbeat, almost sounding like something out of the 1960's. But the lyrics themselves are full of pain, and it's one of the few songs that really makes you think when you take off the headphones.

There seems to be more "rock" in this album than any of their others. Many of the songs have really great electric guitar melodies (if "electric guitar" really is the instrument they use - it sounds like it, at least), and about halfway to three-quarters through the song, the whole thing changes for a little bit - the background music becomes the main, new melodies spring up - before falling back to the established melodies of the rest of the song. I only mention this because it's done incredibly well with most of the songs, raising them to almost heavenly status. "Metal Heart", especially, has an almost divine "change" 3/4 of the way through it. I'm sure this isn't the first album where Garbage has featured changes like that, but it is the most noticeable here, if only for the skillfull way it's handled.

And for anyone who hated the pop-sugar taste of their last album, don't worry - the songs here are dark and thought-provoking, just like they used to be.

In conclusion - this is easily their best CD yet. Don't miss out!
