Free Music Notes for GarbageFree Music Review: Their first album Hit: 5 Stars
Well, the first LP by Garbage...when I first listened to it, I was like..."this is the great album". It was six or seven years ago I believe at this point. Since then my opinion haven't changed. Garbage's first album is still one of my favorite. I don't know if you'll like it - the prerogative is yours. But maybe I can help you a little bit. Let's go over the tracks.
1. Supervixen - my rating is 9/10. The first track on the album - and the first impression. Of course, it's not one of the main songs, but it sounds really good. I think Supervixen can make you become interested in the following tracks.
2. Queer - 10/10. One of my much loved tracks. I can describe it by one word - intriguing. The title fits perfectly. Just pick the song up and you'll dwell on it. Watch the video also and you'll figure out what I mean.
3. Only Happy When It Rains - 100% 10/10. Great work. "Pour your misery down on me" and "My only comfort is the night gone black" - these lines speak for themselves. You can't be indifferent when Shirley sings. The video is great too...as for me, I can't focus on anything else when it's on TV (that happens rarely though). Only Happy When It Rains drives the fans crazy at the shows. As I said before - great work.
4. As Heaven Is Wide - 9/10. The track lyrically seems quite personal written like the others. Fast tempo playing and a bit slower singing. In my opinion it's kind of a first bridge for the next songs on the album.
5. Not My Idea - 9/10 or around. I really like this song. I know, Garbage's not the band to give you only optimistic feelings...but this track always keeps me energetic. It's not for jogging, of course!
6. A Stroke Of Luck - 9,5/10. One of my favorite pieces. The one to touch a chord...and also to give you...maybe almost the whole conception of Garbage.
7. Vow - 10/10. Well, you might have expected that I use this mark only for singles. I think every song on the album is a potential single. Forget that Vow's the single and it's still the potential one. The song can really make you say something like..."Wow!" (if you've never heard it before). The video fits well too.
8. Stupid Girl - 10/10. Another good song. I believe it's the second bridge on the album. Stupid Girl is easy to remember and hard to forget. The idea of the song isn't hidden in the video so it's not difficult to understand it. The Clash fans can also recognize a loop from Train In Vain.
9. Dog New Tricks - 10/10. "Everyone I know has gone away. Died or left or just forgot to stay". The lyrics of this song takes you far with the music. You just listen to this song and then it's over and you want it to be played again. That's what I like about it.
10. My Lover's Box - 9,5/10. Shirley's vocals are great. Her amazing voice and Garbage's wonderful music makes you become stuck during the listening. That's a trap, yeah, but it's a damn good one. And My Lover's Box is a 100% element of this trap.
11. Fix Me Now - 8,5/10. My rating is lower here. Well, it's really hard to have an album that contains only masterpieces. That was just a debut record and...I have to say, I like Fix Me Now. The song consists of nice music and lyrics, moreover, it has its own mood - and it DOES matter.
12. Milk - there's no doubt that it's 10/10...20/10 to be honest. I usually don't listen to this song during the day. Night is a perfect time for me...maybe that's why I'm into Garbage. The song's a really sadly-driven one. It's perfect, in my opinion. Listen to the sample here and try to think then. If you feel the same just for a while...it'll be the first step to become a fan, I guess.
Well, you've come a long way. What do you think?
Free Music Review: A stroke of luck getting this out of your cd player... Hit: 5 Stars
I'm 19 now, and I got this cd when I was about 15. I still love it! I've been listening to it more and more lately so why not come on here to tell you about how cool it is:
1. Supervixen -This is a sexy track. It starts fast, becomes sorta smooth and slow again once Shirley starts singing then all of a sudden BAM! The chorus breaks in and just rocks.
2. Queer -This song is quite mysterious, chilling, dark. Shirleys voice is guarented to grab your attention.
3. Only Happy When It Rains -For anyone who loves the rain, this is the song for you. Everything about it rocks: vocals, the beat, lyrics. Its about finding a comfort in pain.
4. As Heaven Is Wide -Whoa, this ones different. Its kind of dark also, but good. Has a spinning, almost techno dizzy dance vibe to it, but it's interesting.
5. Not My Idea -An angry track. Something you will love to sing along to. Lots of emotion in the music and the vocals of this song. "This is not my idea of a good time!"
6. A Stroke Of Luck -This ones one of the slower tracks. Its beautiful but quite sad, despite the title. Although it is very emotional and intense. A beautiful tune that should soothe your ears.
7. Vow -This ones sounds very cool on your headphones! The beat is very trippy though, so be careful. It's another angry kind of song, and it's also intense.
8. Stupid Girl -Wow! What is it about this song? The beat towards the beginning is just really intense and beautiful. The lyrics are about a girl who doesnt believe in anything. This is one of my all time favorite songs. I highly reccommend this one.
9. Dog New Tricks -This one simply rocks. It grew on me the more I listened to it though. The chorus is very cool, you'll want to sing along to it, Shirley sounds angry.
10. My Lover's Box -I love this track! Her voice is very soft and whispery towards the beginning, but as soon as the drums break in, she starts to get really emotional in the chorus. This is one song I can not get sick of.
11. Fix Me Now -The guitar in this one sounds really cool. The vocals are a bit quiet at first but get louder towards the chorus. This is an interesting mix of music though. Pop, yet rock. Give this one a chance though.
12. Milk -This ones a bit more downtempo. A very, cool, freshing, chilled back out song. "I am cool...cool as the deepest ocean." Her voice during this song is just beautiful as well, she really sings her heart out. It's one of my favorite tracks.
In conclusion, I'm telling you, don't miss out on this great cd! Garbage is an original band, with rocking vocals, lyrics, beats, and they are intense as I have mentioned many times. Also check out "Version 2.0." If you like this album, you'll you should love that one as well. Also, despite the pretty pink feather boa cover, this isnt just chick music. I know plenty of guys who love this band, and, as you can tell by the good reviews, you should really pick up this great cd.
Free Music Review: Garbage in, - a Musical Treasure out !!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Let's be realistic. Most of the time when you buy a normal popular album, from songs you heard and liked on the radio, you are lucky if you like one or two additional songs. That is the case with the preponderance of albums I have so purchased, the usual two or three good songs, plus one or two more better than average songs (if you're lucky)and then mediocrity (also known as filler). Let's call this "The rule of the hit song / album" This is probably why the music industry sales are down. Buyers are getting fed up, paying upwards of $14 to get a hit and one or two more songs (like three lemons, maybe two cherries). You tend to feel like you were ripped off. Conversely, There are exceptions to our "rule", when you buy the rare bird, where you like a majority of the songs, Voila, you hit the jackpot (three bars!). And when you get the really rare bird, where you like all the songs, you hit the big one (Three sevens!!!) Garbage, is such a rarity. I have a few other rarities as well and I may discuss them in the future but for now lets talk about Shirley Manson and Garbage I became a Garbage fan quite by accident. Of course I'd heard their hit single "Stupid Girl" but that isn't what interested me. It was the remarkable song they performed on the excellent sound track to Romeo and Juliette called #1 Crush. WOW!!! What a unique sound and Shirley Manson, what a voice, no not spectacular but neither was the music. Manson's voice was sultry, sexy and oh so cynical, it fit the music, which is kind of a bluesy, brooding, alternative grunge, perfectly. I was hooked so I went out and bought Garbage, Version 2, a pretty good album in it's own right. So I decided a rare bird deserves another crack and off I went for Garbage S/T, which was even better (though slightly)and here we are. If I have a favorite song "As Heaven is Wide" is it, though there are 5 other 5 star songs and nothing below 4 stars! "As Heaven Is Wide" "Nothing that you say will release you /Nothing that you pray would forgive you /Nothing's what your words mean to me /Something that you did will destroy me /Something that you said will stay with me /Long after you're dead and gone If flesh could crawl /My skin would fall /From off my bones /And run away from here As far from God /As heaven is wide /As far from God /As angels can fly" All Garbage's music has a slow to medium alternative rock tempo and kind of a dark melancholy feel. One of the best Alternative - pop albums of 1995. To me it has a semi - gothic feel as well. While this music is not for everyone (it is a little depressing) it is certainly an essential album for those who like a grungey catchy semi - gothic feel to their music and especially for those who like female fronted rock/metal and since so many good songs are on one album it's also a great value. Band Members Shirley Manson, vocals Butch Vig, percussion Steve Marker, guitar/bass Duke Erikson, Keyboard/guitar/bass
Free Music Review: An album that I still love. Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard Garbage on MTV's Alternative Nation in 1995 witht he song "Queer". For some reason, the song didn't hit me right off. Then, when "Only Happy When It Rains" came out, that's what got me into them. I went out and bought this record, and definitely got into it, even "Queer" became a great song.
I like the fact that this album has a bit of something for everyone. Track by track review:
1. Supervixen - Kind of grainy and raw sounding, but more of a rock song. One of the more aggressive tracks on the album.
2. Queer - This one's a little more mellow. It's not mellow enough to say it doesn't have an edge, but it is mellow enough to where you could kind of chill to it.
3. Only Happy When It Rains - This is definitely an alt-rock song. A lot less of the electronic style, and more guitar driven. Pretty upbeat with depressing lyrics.
4. As Heaven Is Wide - This one is my favorite on the album! It's got more of a darker industrial feel. Sometimes, you'll read about Garbage having some styles of industrial in their music, and this is one of the songs that would better show that. Pretty moody, dark lyrics, great music to dance or drive to.
5. Not My Idea - Probably the most pop song of the album. My least favorite, but still a great one. Very catchy though.
6. A Stroke Of Luck - This song is great because while it's mellow, it's pretty dark in its sound. It's like a song that you could have a different opinion to. Some would find it sexy, some would find it depressing, and some would find it just kind of ambient and relaxing.
7. Vow - Kind of abrasive in lyrics. It's got a upbeat dancy feel, but is a little rough sounding. This is probably my second favorite song on the album.
8. Stupid Girl - I like this song because it's got that alt-rock thing going, but still infuses a lot of the electronic sound as well. Pretty dancy and just pretty fun all around.
9. Dog New Tricks - This one's another one that has more of an industrial-type feel to it. Again, pretty moody, but also rather catchy. The lyrics compliment it rpetty well.
10. My Lover's Box - Like A Stroke Of Luck, people have different opinions on this. I find Shirley's vocals to be really sexy sounding on this song. It's pretty melodic, but still kind of dark. I swear it sounds like it's getting louder at the end, which can be a bit annoying at times.
11. Fix Me Now - To me, this is the most depressing track on the album. This one focuses more on the guitar again. Melodic song, but definitely on a more lower sad scale.
12. Milk - I have to say the milk reference to me always took away a bit of the seriousness to this song. Whatever suits you, I guess. Anyway, a very mellow track, dark, sexy, longing for something that isn't there anymore.
So there you go. Pick up the record.
Free Music Review: All Time Favorite Band Hit: 5 Stars
Do you remember the day you heard your favorite band for the first time? I do.
I had been helping a relative move my senior year of high school. As I was leaving for home he asked me if I liked Garbage. Ha ha, right?
Sure, doesn't everyone? I mused sarcastically, thinking he was trying to be funny...trying but failing miserably.
He said, No no the band.
Never heard of them, I said. But I was thinking that a band that called themselves Garbage had to be garbage. At that point I really wanted to go home.
Well, he gave me the CD explaining it wasn't his kind of music (sissified country was) and the second thing to earn an internal "WTF?" was the pink feather cover art. I mean, pink?? Pink was a BIG no no. No girl I knew would be caught dead in pink, with pink or looking at something pink. It was the nineties okay. We all wore flannels and holey jeans. Was this going to be a Mariah Carey wannabe so some other pop diva knock off? I was more a Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice n Chains kinda girl. Besides that, rock belonged exclusively to male artists. I never heard a female lead singer that I could actually tolerate listening to...until I heard Garbage for the first time. I have never looked back.
Despite everything that told me I should drop the CD in the "garbage" on my way to my car, I gave the band a chance just so I could say I listened to it...and fell in love almost instantly. We're not talking puppy love here, okay? I have not heard their equal in 15 years. They have ruined me for all other bands. The music is complex and whole. There are so many layers of instruments and harmonies and melodies and other fantastic sounds in every song!!?? And they are dark, oh so dark and sexy! Perfect mood music. The dissonance is freaking incredible. Who else does that!!?? Tell Me!!?? It seems to me enormous effort went into every track to make each of them amazing all by themselves. Not saying that Garbage should be every one's favorite, but they are mine because the music speaks to me in a very intimate and unexplainable way. If I had my own soundtrack following me around everyday...Garbage would be playing.
This album and the next (2.0) are very special to me (not so much their stuff after 2.0). I have so many nostalgic memories wrapped in them, good and bad. They have never gotten old.
I listen almost exclusively to alternative rock radio on the internet (107.9 out of Las Vegas) when I listen for new stuff. But I am not huge into music. The first two Garbage albums are the only albums I own where I enthusiastically enjoy every single track on them. Can't say that about any other band, although Muse comes in at a close 2nd.
