Free Music Notes for Garbage

Free Music Review: Brilliantly calculated emotion
Hit: 5 Stars

At the time, it must have seemed like the height of rashness to release an album like "Garbage" in 1995 - Nirvana was gone, perhaps, but hardly forgotten, and its legions of increasingly crass and debased imitators were turning the airwaves into a nigh-unlistenable morass of hoarse male vocals and unimpressive musicianship. The alternative movement had started out rebelling against the slick, emotionless pop of the late Eighties but in the process had become just what they'd fought against - namely, boring and commercial.

Listening to this album nearly ten years later, it's easy to forget the context of its release - but what Garbage did with this release was to reaffirm that no matter what the fashion du jour, there's always going to be a place for music that combines sleek, glossy production values with canny intelligence and a somewhat skewed worldview.

Shirley Manson was, I think, one of the best female vocalists to emerge from the 1990s, and her persona is unique - not a diva, not a granola folkster, not a hard-drinkin' hard-fightin' Janis Joplin wannabe, not an intellectual shrinking violet, and not a tactless come-and-get-me sexual object. She's her own creature with her own sound: a bit of jazz, a bit of punk, and a voice like a Weimer Berlin torch singer.

Garbage's sound is dark and alluring, detached and cerebral but with a core of raw emotion that powers the work. The music is slick and beautiful, and the production creates a soundscape that rewards repeated listening with new treasures over and over again. And unlike pop, where sexual content often seems robotic and mechanical, Garbage creates an atmosphere of genuine tension - of bemused perversity and sexual danger, like the Velvet Underground or early Madonna.

You can start anywhere with Garbage, but why not start at the beginning? Though whichever album you buy, I guarantee that it won't be leaving your playlist for a long, long time.

Free Music Review: Domination to Surrender in Twelve Rich Tracks
Hit: 5 Stars

If you're looking for room thumping, full frontal rock n' roll, listen up. This is a club band but also more. Beyond the pounding, full-bodied sound is the writing, and it is good, very good. Together, the music and the lyrics in GARBAGE "G" give a spectrum portrait of raw emotion.

G begins with the dominatrix in SUPERVIXEN, "I will be your religion". We have her erotic promise, "I'll feed your obsessions". The audio dropouts are the tease and denial. If vocalist Shirley Manson doesn't own you on this first track then try to resist her in QUEER with its sensual invitation to "...take a look at me, let me dirty-up your mind". There are surprises throughout this CD. ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS is a signature song. It is ironically upbeat. Manson is "riding high upon a deep depression". And we love her enthusiasm!

AS HEAVEN IS WIDE is an extended curse and very scary. The venom from betrayal is undiluted, "Choke on guilt that's far too good for you". In NOT MY IDEA her patience - "I bit my tongue and stood in line" - turns to bitterness. She is vengeful in VOW, "You burned me but I'm back at your door. Like Joan of Arc coming back for more". The anger may be self-directed in STUPID GIRL, "A million lies to sell yourself is all you ever had". It's another signature track. Regret surfaces in DOG NEW TRICKS, "Sometimes didn't say what I meant to say". And desperation in MY LOVER'S BOX, "Send me an angel to love...I'm afraid I'll never get to heaven". FIX ME NOW is an urgent plea. The tone has certainly changed from the early tracks. Again in A STROKE OF LUCK and the plaintive final track, MILK, we see her vulnerability and longing, "I am lost...but I'd be love and sweetness if I had you".

The CD jacket has a sampling of the lyrics. I'd like to have seen them printed in their entirety. As it is now you will need to mine the gems with the replay button. On reflection...not a bad thing.

Free Music Review: Garbage doesn't play Garbage
Hit: 5 Stars

Out of Garbage's two albums, this one is my favorite. Although in the second album, more technical and electronic sounds are added, I feel that the lyrics are somewhat better in this album.

The first track on the album, "Supervixin", gives you a taste of their sounds at the first second. The skips in it are what really get you into their music.

My personal favorites are: "I'm Only Happy When It Rains", "As Heaven is Wide", "Not My Idea", and "Stupid Girl".

"I'm Only Happy When It Rains" is great for people, like me, who are often depressed. I feel that it's more of a "joke-like" song, and in a deep, unique, Garbage-way, they are able to make it sound serious but at the same time, it can make you laugh.

"As Heaven is Wide" is a GREAT song. I must agree with Nishana, the best line is, "If flesh could crawl, my skin would fall from off my bones, and run away from here, as far from God as heaven is wide, as far from God as angels can fly". Where else can you find lyrics like that?

"Not My Idea" is my second favorite song on the disc. For any of us who went through Jr. High and was not one of the "so-called-popualr-kids", you will really relate to this song. My fav line..."You thought I was a little girl, you thought I was a little mouse, you thought you'd take me by surprise, now I'm hear burnin' down your house..."

"Stupid Girl" is another great song. It talks about girls who pretend to be something their not. Though it's slow at the begining, but it picks up towards the middle. It has a catchy chorus and meaningful lyrics.

As you can see, I love Garbage. I think anyone who likes rock, punk, pop, techno, and eeire and meaningful lyrics, will find that CD is D.), all the above! Enjoy!

Free Music Review: Simply haunting...
Hit: 5 Stars

Never an album did precisely what this one did to me. It has a sad and depressing mood that never sounded so well. Shirley Manson is a genius; her lyrics are simply mesmerizing. And what about the three boys, they literally hit you with a raw, threatening and unpolished guitars riff! The mix of both gives you a brainwash. For those of you who like a grunge feeling which interfere with alternative rock at his best, you'll be at heaven with Garbage.

The whole thing begins with "Supervixen" Great opener, not the best but still a great choice. You'll be very well introducing to the lyrics of Manson: "I'll be you're religion, this thing you'll never doubt"... Right after this "Queer" comes - WOW, this is what I meant when I said something haunting... Her voice; incredible, a tremendous depth and the lyrics are ghastly, one of the best song they ever produced... Others highlight include "Only happy when it rains", "Vow", "Stupid Girl" and "Dog New Tricks". There are tracks that seem to be hidden jewel like "As Heaven Is Wide", this track is rarely cited and I think it's one of the best songs. The album has its weak points "Fix me now" just did not gives me the effect that others tracks did but it's still superior from many things who could heard.

But my favorites has to be those two; "A stroke of luck" and especially "Milk", it's the last songs (generally the best track on a Garbage's album) is a ballad which is far more cruel, sad and ironic than is name represent.

Hands down the best from Garbage resides in this album. I mean you could easily do a "Greatest Hits" only with the twelve tracks; the music, the lyrics, the style and atmosphere are simply the best. I can't ask for more when I got this ground breaking masterpiece

Free Music Review: The Kings (And Queen) Of Modern Rock
Hit: 5 Stars

One of my all-time favorite albums is the 1995 debut disc by Garbage, who, in my opinion, are the world's greatest modern rock band. The group came together when guitarists' Duke Erikson & Steve Marker wanted to form a band with their friend, drummer/producer Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana's classic, "Nevermind"). But they still needed a singer. One evening the guys are watching MTV, and they see a music video by a band named Angelfish, fronted by a Scottish lass named Shirley Manson. Impressed with Shirley, the Garbage men immediately contact her, and the rest, as they say, is history. Their 1995 self-titled debut album is a fabulous whirlpool blend of bone-crunching rock and shimmering pop, with classy euro-trash production, samples and effects, capped off by Shirley's seductive voice. It arguably remains their best album to date (though I certainly love "Version 2.0" and "beautifulgarbage" just fine). There's not a dull track anywhere on "Garbage." Whether tearing up the joint on rockers like "Supervixen," "As Heaven Is Wide," "Vow," and "My Lover's Box," pumping up the pop on "Only Happy When It Rains," "Fix Me Now," and the big hit "Stupid Girl," or soaring through the atmosphere on songs like "Queer," "A Stroke Of Luck" and "Milk," Shirley & the boys are a superb musical force to be reckoned with. They are original, intelligent, crafty, and just plain genius. To my ears, there's no other modern rock band these days that comes close to them. I sure hope that there will be more music to come from Garbage in the near future, 'cause they're that good. "Garbage" is a stunning album by the kings (and queen) of modern rock. Long may they reign!
