Free Music Notes for Garbage

Free Music Review: Deep, Dark, Layered, Intricate, and Difficult to Top
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, I've procrastinated about posting a review for this long enough. Garbage (self titled) is quite simply one of my favorite albums, period. Not only do I empathize with the emotions and artistic flavors of it, but also it's one of the most complex pieces of production ever created. I own a *very* expensive monitoring earphone made by an audiology company. It's arguably the highest resolution, most transparent audio transducer on the planet. When I listen to Garbage with these earphones, there's more intricacy and complexity and stuff swirling around than my brain can really keep track of. What's so amazing, though, is that every little sound lends itself to the music, to the art. It never ceases to amaze me. Stupid Girl has these vocal layers that are absolutely astounding in their subtlety. Every song has unique production quality and textures, as apposed to Version 2.0's Pro Tools sound. Then of course, we come to Shirley's voice. There's simply nothing I would change about her vocal inflexions and stylings at all for this CD. Yes, they are heavily influenced by Curve, but Garbage is uniquely something else. And as far as I'm concerned, the more bands in this "genre" of music the better. I can only hope the band doesn't dilute their sound further with too much Pretenders and Beach Boys influence than they already have. Some flavors just don't compliment each other very well. By the way, they also make great B-Sides. This is one band that deserves to have their music mastered by Steve Hall at Future Disc in HDCD.

Free Music Review: Garbage's First Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's hard to believe that I've been a fan of Garbage since 1995 and that I'm only eighteen years old but it's true! This was actually the first CD I ever purchased and I played it non-stop for about a year. I just refused to listen to anything else because I was so taken by their guitar and keyboarding sound with loop-filled electronic rock that's experimental yet gritty.

I remember seeing the video for "Queer" with Shirley Manson walking around the streets with her hands beckoning the camera to follow. I was completely captivated, to say the least, for I had never seen anything quite like it before. I also think that this album helped me deal with my parents moving me around so much in such an early stage in my life. It was getting to the point of me finding it useless in making any friends. I strongly believe that this album helped me deal with a lonely time in my life.

I actually saw them live for [a] second time ... and it was really amazing. When they performed the silky ballad "Milk" it reminded me of this album and how much it meant to me. It seems that I'm always listening to VERSION 2.0 (which is my favorite album by them) or BEAUTIFULGARBAGE (because it's their newest). Either way, each individual album is an absolute pleasure to listen to. Garbage's unique style of postmodern technopop with dark, angst-laden lyrics will appeal to alternative, punk-rock, and even techno/electronic fans. They were the groundbreaking artists of their time and I truly believe that they are going to be creating great music for years to come.

Free Music Review: a milestone in electronica mixed with live instruments.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been listening to this album steadily for YEARS. And it NEVER gets old. Garbage should be praised for their innovative music style which has gone on to inspire hundreds (or maybe thousands) of bands in the trip-hop/downtempo genre. My band Beauty's Confusion has a lot to owe to Garbage. This music is catchy, unique, depressing, and perfectly-produced. I was lucky enough to see Garbage in 1998 on their Version 2.0 tour... and it was great. Met (and got pictures with, and autographs from) Shirley, Butch, and Duke. They are the nicest people in the world. Truly. I was stoked when I met them all after the show in Tampa at USF. One gripe I have about Garbage though-- what's with the new album? They had two perfect albums-- and when I mean perfect I mean PERFECT-- then Beautiful Garbage came out and I'm like "no, this is not right". I'm sure I speak for a lot of Garbage fans when I say "what the hell are you guys thinking?" But hey.... hopefully they'll come back to their roots.... their roots are a solid, inspiring foundation and no one should ever take those two albums for granted. I sound so stupid when I say that but man, this album and Version 2.0 saved my life COUNTLESS times.... when I was down, depressed, bummed out, [angry] about girls, you name it. Thanks for everything, Garbage. I hope the next album is like the first two. And to everyone out there-- forget about how much airplay they got on eMpTyV.... listen to this album as a whole and realize how well-written and amazing it is.

Free Music Review: Stellar Debut
Hit: 5 Stars

This album still gets high rotation in my CD player, 7+ years after its release. It's an incredibly unique CD that captured my attention when it came out. Garbage is comprised of Shirley Manson (Vocals, guitar), Duke Erikson (guitars, keyboards, etc), Steve Marker (guitar, bass, etc), Butch Vig (drums, efx, etc). This is one of the more innovative and original debut albums I have heard, a pretty influencial album if you ask me. There's a mix of everything here. This is by far their darkest album, there's lots of grungy type guitars, but they also manage to encorporate different noises, you'll probably hear different sounds each time you turn on the CD.

Shirley's vocals are captivating. Haunting at one minute, next she is seductive. There is not one bad song on this album. As one reviewer pointed out, each song could have stood on its own as a single. My personal favorite is the closing track "Milk", a high note to end the album on. Very haunting melody and lyrics. "Supervixen" has a unique start/stop sound to it. The album actually has a lot of lyrics that I think a lot of people could relate to, about feeling different from everyone else. "Queer" is a good example. "Only Happy When It Rains" is a fairly depressing song that works itself into an anthem.

This CD works on a lot of levels, worth many many many repeated listenings. One of the best bands to come out on the 90s in my opinion. Give this one a shot, it's a great CD.

Free Music Review: I KNOW THERE'S A BUNCH OF REVIEWS SO HERE'S ONE MORE
Hit: 5 Stars

I would give this album six stars if I could because this is a solid five stars not a rounded up five stars like a lot of albums are. Not only is their not a bad song on here there isn't even a weak song. From my experience this happens only about one in every hundred plus albums I buy or every five years, whichever comes first.

I love Shirley Manson's alto voice and her twangy, cynical delivery. The songs are well written and the musicians are very capable. The Music is sort of Pop/alternative/gothique. Heady stuff. And here's something else to look forward to, Version 2.0(the second album) is almost as good, as is the third release, Beautiful Garbage. Pick this up. It is an album that will entertain you for hours. Also Shiley Manson can be heard on Angelfish.

1. Supervixen, GOOD SONG
