Free Music Notes for Garden StateFree Music Review: these songs are *extremely* moving. no joke Hit: 5 Stars
In this movie, Natalie Portman offers Zach Braf her headphones and tells him that the song he is about to listen to will "change his life". This turns out to be no corny movie line and no joke. This is one of the most breathtaking music compilations I have ever heard, and is a touching accompaniment to one of 2004's most important films.
I have little to say, other than this soundtrack earns the highest 5-star review from me. Frou Frou's "Let Go" (featuring Imogen Heap) is stunning, as are songs performed by Coldplay, Zero 7 and The Shins (whose "New Slang" is the life-altering track Portman insists Braf listen to over her headphones).
Complex musical and emotional influences of U2, Coldplay, Catherine Wheel, David Gray, and Simon and Garfunkel drift eerily across the landscapes of both soundtrack and film; those artists' introspective sensibilities playing out in Braf's character's struggle with his own painful self-awareness and search for trust and happiness.
You are guaranteed to appreciate this soundtrack and film to the core of your soul, if you possess the humility and self-consciousness to have ever felt lost, alone, or that certain inexplicable and sometimes uncomfortable vibe that "you still haven't found what you're looking for...."
The highest and most sincere recommendations possible for both the soundtrack and movie.
Free Music Review: I want Braff's entire music collection! Hit: 5 Stars
I can't even tell you how many times I've purchased a movie soundtrack only to be disappointed by the mediocre (at best) collection. Before Garden State, I'm pretty sure the last soundtrack I bought was for Men in Black back in '97. Major disappointment there.
So when I locked onto the Garden State soundtrack, I wavered. I checked out the song clips on Amazon and decided to sit on it for awhile. But I couldn't get the clips out of my head. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to only know 30 seconds of a great song? So I finally gave in. I purchased the CD, and worried that somehow it was going to turn out like one of those movies where they show all the good parts in the preview.
Several years later and this album is still among my Top 10 most played albums. Having grown up listening to my dad's Simon & Garfunkel albums, I already had a foot in the door with their contribution, but beyond that I was only familiar with Coldplay. I'd heard of a few of the other artists in name only, but I was deeply impressed with each and every track on this album. It's not very often that I find an album, not to mention a soundtrack, that I can bare to listen to all the way through. Even my parents have enjoyed it!
Zach Braff has a great ear for music and I wish I could tap into his private vault of music to build up my own stash.
Free Music Review: let go Hit: 5 Stars
This soundtrack is extremely unique--this is one of the few soundtracks where I knew close to none of the songs, and I loved even before I watched the film. I didn't think the film put these songs in the right places, at some places in the movie, the song just didn't fit. (i.e. when they were walking with his friend to get his mother's gold chain, they played lebanese blonde i think, I don't think they needed to play anything there, but that's just my opinion.) The remake of postal service's "Such Great Heights" had to grow on me after listening to the original, but it truly is a relaxing piece. The opening of the album with coldplay was a wise move on Zach's part, it really lures you in, but it's a shame it didn't last longer--but then again, it all adds to the effect of it being an intro(I also thought that this song was perefect for the opening of the movie) frou frou is fantastic, although i've heard this song many times before it was released for tihs soundtrack, the song took on a whole new meaning afterwards--as if it were meant to be written for this particular film. thievery corporation also contributed to the masterpiece--even though i didn't understand why it was in the film, the track blended in well with the rest of this eclectic album. All in all, I enjoyed the soundtrack a lot more than the movie it was made for, and the songs are fantastic.
Free Music Review: Best Soundtrack I've Ever Bought Hit: 5 Stars
Not counting the soundtracks that are solely film scores, this is without a doubt the greatest soundtrack I have ever bought. Every song! The best, top notch, if you like the movie, then you'll love this music! Kudos to Braff-- he did such a marvelous job with the film AND the music. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that had such perfect songs for each scene--They were masterfully chosen.
Of course, we get songs from The Shins on here-- I hadn't heard of them until the film. Total addict now! There's Simon and Garfunkel (love love love), Frou Frou (awesome), Nick Drake (the coolest!), and so much more to buy this soundtrack for. I guarantee a love of the soundtrack if you like the movie. Hey, I totally recommend this soundtrack for people who didn't like the movie (how can this be??!! but, whatever...) or people who haven't seen it (in which case-- RENT OR BUY!!)
My punky sister calls the sounds of this CD laidback hippie techno. A fair description, if you want to put a label on music, which I hate to do, but for the sake of description, there you are. Definitely check this CD out sometime, whether you love the movie, hate it, never seen it, heard of it, whatever. Check out the clips that amazon offers to listen to and be convinced!!
Listen to these songs!! It will change your life. I swear.
Free Music Review: Unbelievable, Eclectic, Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
The music which was chosen for the Garden State soundtrack is, in a word, indescribable. When watching the movie, the soothing jams fill the background of the movie as a perfect companion, suiting the modd of the movie perfectly. However, with only a few exceptions, the music does not stand out in the movie, thus leading most people to not appreciate it fully. This CD is one of the few that I can listen to on repeat almost enlessly, without getting bored. And it is awesome driving music.
Only when you listen to the music on its own do you begin to understand the impact that it has on you, and on the movie. The CD brings together some very talented artists, from Coldplay to the Shins to Remy Zero and more. All of these artists contribute uniquely to the feel of the soundtrack. Zach Braff did a wonderful job pairing these selections. From the electronic, down-tempo feel of "In the Waiting Line" (#3)and "Lebanese Blonde" (#9) to the emotional pair of contributions from the Shins ("Caring is Creepy" (#2) and "New Slang" (#4)), these songs work wonders even outside of the movie. It has permanently made it into my top-10 rotation of CDs, and is without a doubt the best soundtrack of 2004, and quite possibly even longer...
