Free Music Review: A Great Compilation in a Totally Undistinguished Field
Hit: 5 Stars

Movie compilations are the rule, not the exeception, and so many lose their freshness after two or three spins. Not so with this very strong collection of accessible, brilliant rock performed by known and unknown artists. If you haven't seen GARDEN STATE, you'll love the material and understand something about the movie and its themes. If you've seen it, these songs -- as Portman's character, Sam, says in the script... "will change your life -- I promise you." There isn't a dud i the bunch, and I was thrilled to discover THE SHINS, whose quirky, but polished, rock I'd never heard before. And Nick Drake finally secures the proper showcase for one of his most thoughtful songs, "One of therse things first." Well written and performed: all. Well mastered: most. The sequence of cuts, perfect. As a rock compilation of a very memorable motion picture, one that could become a classic.
And it has a sweetness to it, all of it, that is all too rare these days.
You won't go wrong with this one.

Free Music Review: Best Soundtrack of 2004
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack brings to mind another great alternative soundtrack: the one put together for "Good Will Hunting", which revolved around the works of the late Elliot Smith, one of the greatest voices in the neo-folk movement.

Ironically, Smith's may very well be the only notable name in modern folk that is missing from the lineup for the music to one of the best movies of 2004, "Garden State". From the legendary Nick Drake and living legends Simon and Garfunkel, to songs by contemporary The Shins and Iron & Shine (with an acoustic version of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights"), along with a sprinkle of lounge music courtesy of Zero 7, Thievery Corporation and much enjoyable and Dido-sounding Frou Frou, the album offers an enjoyable musical reward to those who come to it.

Along with "Lost in Translation" and "21 Grams", with a style more focused on a folk and downbeat sound, "Garden State" carries one of the most solid and enjoyable soundtracks in recent times.

Free Music Review: Soundtrack and Film, perfectly paired
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought the soundtrack to Garden State about seven days after seeing the film, and listening to it continues to remind me of the tone of and of scenes from the film. That's a compliment to both parts, and especially to Zach Braff's amazing job combining the two.

Both songs from The Shins, plus Frou Frou's "Let Go", set the tone - bringing you in without hitting you over the head with angst. Simon & Garfunkel's tune, obvious for the film, is perfectly placed. Colin Hay's quietly drawn song has started to get me to listen more closely and has begun to connect me to the weakest part of the soundtrack, the midsection, with one of my less-favorite Nick Drake songs closing out a set of four. Still I can't turn it off or change the order, and I'm listening through and through.

This isn't just an introduction to some of the better bands of this generation, though it does some of that - it's a great collection standing on its own. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: One of my top 5 favorite soundtracks of all time
Hit: 5 Stars

There aren't many soundtracks nowdays where the music leaves a profound effect on me. A lot of soundtracks to me are pretty disposable, not "Garden State". The soundtrack to the quirky dramedy from Scrubs's own Zach Braff is the exact opposite. "Garden State" has that great mixed taped feel, thanks in part to Zach's great taste in music. The music is an eclectic mix of alternative (Coldplay), indie (The Shins), trip hop (Zero 7), and folk (Nick Drake). The songs Zach chose really captured the essence of the scenes in the film they were in. The one song that really stood out on the entire cd was "New Slang" by The Shins. I just love the simple acoustic arrangements and toe-tapping melodies. My other favorite songs are the moving Remy Zero track "Fair" and "Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine. Almost two years later, I still love listening to "Garden State" (as well as watching the film). This is easily one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Free Music Review: LOVE the movie, LOVE the soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

I have seen GARDEN STATE three times, three weeks in a row. Every time I see it, I love it more and more. Zach Braff is such a talented actor, writer, and director. And, music producer as well. Anyone who can put together a soundtrack like this is brilliant. My only critique: Don't put Bonnie Somerville on a record, ever. The song and the style didn't go with the flow of the CD. At least it's the last song, so you don't have to skip to the next song. My favorite song is "Let Go" by Frou Frou. It perfectly describes the storyline of the movie. I also really like "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" by Colin Hay. It's a really sweet, acoustic-style song. I do miss some songs that they played in the previews, such as "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service and "Love Will Come Through" by Travis. But, I already have these songs so I guess it doesn't really matter. This is a great CD to have in your collection.
