Free Music Review: Garth Goes In A Different Direction....And it Works!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard of "Garth as Chris", I was thinking the obvious.."what is he doing now? " But boy was I wrong! I figured this would be some unrealistic view of some unknown pop star, and on top of it the king of all modern country music was portraying him. But as I heard more music off of this album, the more convinced I was that this was quality music. So, I bought the album, and to my amazement, it was more than quality...it was extrordinary! Garth took this from his mind...there is no real life Chris Gaines, Garth thought of the whole character and more importantly, the story behind the character from his imagination! From his parents, to his highs and lows of life, it was all there. And then there's the music. If you like Garth with an edge- you'll love "...In the Life of Chris Gaines". From "That's the Way I Remember It" which is acoustic guitar driven song with a pop driven beat with the message of how your mind likes to remember things, which is not necessarily the way they really were. To the slower songs like "Unsigned Letter" and "It Don't Matter to the Sun", and finally the dark anthem to the new millenium "Right Now". In this song Chris Gaines tries to figure out what's wrong with the world, and what's coming in the future, only to ulimatley say in the chorus "...come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try to love one another..right now!". In conclusion, if you like Garth you will like Chris, even though they are from two totally different worlds, when it comes down to the music, it's Garth's voice, but in Chris's body, and even if you do not like the music , you still have to respect him for taking such a big leap..and daring to try something out of the ordinary, and making it work. Props to Garth on that!

Free Music Review: Let's face it.
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's face it. All of us who saw Garth Brooks perform Billy Joel's "Shameless" on the CMA awards in the early nineties ( a shameless act, perhaps?) knew the truth immediately. This guy is not country. With its Keith Richards-influenced guitar riff, "Shameless" seemed to indicate more that the Rolling Stones had gone country, the obligatory steel guitar aside. Now, millions of fans, millions of albums and ten years after, GB drops the steel guitar and the country music mask that never fit quite right and plays rock `n roll. And plays it well. To borrow a title from an early TV special on the subject, "THIS is Garth Brooks."

And Brooks is still full of surprises. He enlists the stunning musicianship and songslinging abilities of Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Phil Madiera, and Tommy Sims from the burgeoning contemporary Christian market. And while one readily hears the influence of the Beatles, John Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, and Bob Seger in the mix (sometimes I even think I'm hearing a touch of Pink Floyd meets the Artist Formerly Known As in there), less familiar influences from other projects are evident-particularly Kennedy's work with the now defunct PFR and Dogs of Peace. So too, with Madiera. His B-3 craftsmanship echoes his work on Phil Keaggy's "Find Me in These Fields."

Interesting isn't it that GB must shamelessly (and here, no pun is intended) (and I'm fairly shameless about that) assume an alter ego/pseudonym to express himself fully? With "Chris Gaines," GB is finally able to pay proper homage to his Pantheon of Influence and in so doing, update the sound of classic rock and R and B and bring it firmly into the future. Thanks, Garth. Sometimes the most refreshing fragrance blows from a forest you've visited long ago. Rock on.

Free Music Review: Gaines On Target--Critics Shooting Blanks
Hit: 5 Stars

The media-imposed "fiasco" status of Garth Brooks'"The Life of Chris Gaines" takes aim at the wrong target. "Gaines" is easily some of the giga-star's best work, loaded with intelligent lyrics and melodic treatments that rank with the best of the quarter century. In their haste to place Brooks among other unforgiven successes, most critics have looped the story and the songs together, which is tragic for the critically-influenced listener.

If Brooks' handlers are guilty of anything it is misdirected fire, either with the wrong marketing ammunition or in failing to target the right audience. Garth may have contributed to flat sales by passing on the opportunity to play the Gaines character straight in the two television appearances connected to the release of the album. The video and the songs should be measured separately because the true quality is in the music.

Small towns, lost hope, fond memories and memorable short stories lace the list of high impact songs. Single, relevant, piercing thoughts send pure sonic quality through "That's The Way I Remember It" and "Drifting Away". Not since Hal Ketchum's "Small Town Saturday Night" has anyone captured the essence of rural boredom like "Main Street". "It Don't Matter to the Sun" should rank among the best blues ballads of the genre.

Those who criticize can't be familiar enough with the work to understand. My unofficial polling process indicates that most listeners simply didn't buy "Gaines", which will once again work to Garth's advantage. Despite the critic's attempts to torpedo Brooks' dream, he'll achieve yet another first--the first country/crossover world music star to have created a cult classic. Keep me on the list for the first convention.

Free Music Review: AN INCREDIBLE AND FABULOUS PROJECT!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Hey, this is Garth Brooks as you never seen/heard him before! With ?Garth Brooks in...the life of Chris Gaines" he showed us just another side of his talent. I like his country music very much, but I LOVE this new Garth. Sure, it's a step not everyone will be pleased with, especially the straight Country fans, but for those who like Garth Brooks and love music in general this CD is a must! I don't understand the people who criticize this album, because it's a masterpiece! Garth demonstrates the variety of his voice and his music. He changed his look completely for this project and this is not only courageous but also impressing. This other face of Garth Brooks is really cool and with that new project I became an even bigger fan of him. First I almost couldn't believe that it was Garth Brooks who I heard on this CD. Now I'm completely impressed, overwhelmed and hooked. My favourite songs are"lost in you", ?way of the girl" and especially ?right now". I could listen to the CD all day. It's one of the best albums Garth has ever done. Unfortunately Garth Brooks is not as popular here in Germany as he is in the USA, so it's sometimes difficult to get news about his projects. But I'm sure this new CD will show those who don't know him what they are missing. This project is the most courageous thing Garth Brooks has ever done and even if I am repeating myself: It's simply great!!!! I can't wait for the next CD of ?Chris Gaines" and I hope that I will be able to watch the movie here in Europe. I'm convinced that it will be another success for Garth Brooks.

INCREDIBLE PROJECT GARTH!! Keep on going!

Buy this CD!! You won't regret it!!!!

Free Music Review: A different, however, unique approach to Garth's imagination
Hit: 5 Stars

Garth has traveled the long and narrow road to fame and fortune. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to turn that dream of wanting to get your music heard to become a reality; without the possibility of becoming a teenage idol that will be forgotten in the next decade. Not only has Mr. Brooks done that, but he has done something only few artists dare to do...use their imagination! He has given us seven GREAT albums in the past, (not to mention a greatest hits and a Double Live version of those songs we love). And now he's giving us something that he has always wanted to do; be unique. I have seen many different crowds of people flocking in my the millions, it seems, just to see this gifted man. You don't even have to like country music to call yourself a Garth Fan! And then there are those faithful fans that have been following close behind this artist ever since the begining. To those faithful friends of his, I'd like to ask you a question. If you're so faithful and have loved everything this talented legend has displayed to the public's interest, then shouldn't you be there when he goes off into his own little world and develops an album that is something outside of country music; even though his heart is completely in the thought of having this dream carried out? All I'm trying to say is that if you call yourself a true "Garth Fan", then you should be *darn* proud of ANYTHING that he puts out into circulation. That's the true fan that I would like to believe I am. Thank you Garth for giving me the oppurtunity to hear those great songs that you've changed my way of thinking with. -----Kevin; Glendale Heights, IL
