Free Music Notes for Chris Gaines Greatist HitsFree Music Review: Twang wit' a side of soul food Hit: 5 Stars
Let's do hooked on phonics cats and kittens. Change is good. Repeat. Change is reallll good. CG is a breath of soul filled, lost my baby and my fav Beatles album, sexy with a touch of twang, air. The only two artist in history to try a new image was Madonna and Prince and you know they're legends. I commend Mr. Brooks on leaping of the stagnant cliff called repetition. He makes you keep an open mind on what he is and what he was. 'The Way of the Girl' I can definitely do without, due to some pretty lame lyrics and empty beats, but it's easily forgotten with 'Lost in You', 'Driftin' Away', 'Diggin for Gold' (which holds those tasty Police riffs we all know and love; think 'Message in a Bottle') and last, but not least, 'It don't matter to the sun' a semi accoustic cornicopia of Garth's country flair and beautiful octaves. Keep in mind that this ain't old Garth...so don't compare it to any of his older stuff. And do me, and a lot of folks, a favor: Use your imagination and keep an open mind before you call the guy crazy. 'Cause if he's crazy, he's making a lot of green off of it!
Free Music Review: Intriguing, mind-blowing creativity...way to go, Garth! Hit: 5 Stars
I was intrigued with the concept of Chris Gaines from the moment I first read about it. It is fascinating to watch a character created before your eyes (or ears, more properly). I've never been much of a Garth fan before but this time he has definitely hooked me. "Lost In You" is hauntingly beautiful, "White Flag" and "Digging for Gold" truly rock, and the influences on Chris as he matured through the years are clearly (and deliberately, folks) there for all to hear. I'm blown away by this album every time I listen to it. Whether you're a fan of Garth's country music or have never bought a single album of his before, you will love this one, especially for the sensitivity and emotion it shows. And for those who somehow dislike the album, remember, Garth was asked to do this for an upcoming movie. He's always said Chris was a character and that Chris will die in the movie (sorry if this is a spoiler for anyone), so country fans needn't worry about a permanent Garth-to-Chris metamorphosis. That wouldn't bother me at all, though--Chris rules!
Free Music Review: GREAT JOB GARTH!!! 8^) Hit: 5 Stars
Alot of artists have crossed over in acting. Actors who have directed, supermodels who have become actresses, and comedians who have become remarkable actors. So why not do this in music? It does a great job of going back to the 80's and some of the newer styles of the 90's. At least he did not attempt to re-record some of those songs, coming out with new songs of the older styles. I think more artists should have the balls to go out on a limb and take a chance at doing different things. He does look like the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, and sounds like Kenny Loggins, but at least he can sing them and sound remarkably well. Not many of us have a chance to live out our fantansies, and Garth did just that. It is a fictional character for a fictional movie. Hopefully he will do a great job acting in the movie. So listen with an open mind, and I think in time, when the movie is released, more people will come to understand why they decided to to this the way that they did. I would not mind him doing more albums in this style...ROCK ON GARTH & CHRIS!!!!
Free Music Review: Absolutely Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
I watched the last 20 minutes of the TV special, and caught the barest glimpse of the TVGuide cover -- it got me very intrigued. My fiance' loved it and asked for the album; but I had to listen to it first.Wow. First off I am an all-genre music fan; my preference tends towards electronica like the soundtracks to recent movies, and alternative/pop from DC-area local bands. I like Garth, country or country-rock jumbalaya. This definitely a step outside of what you would expect from any country performer; and it is an absolute work of art. Mr. Brooks has definitely proven that he is not an outstanding country artist; he is an amazing and exceptional musician period. Thank goddess he didn't rocktify country songs or go blatantly idiotic on us like many of today's "mainstream"/"popular" performers who think that have to change their entire culture to explore the boundaries of music. This record is very entertaining and touching; I would recommend it to anyone who likes Garth and anyone else who likes music, not genres.
Free Music Review: An album one step ahead of the present Hit: 5 Stars
Extreme versatility, so many styles in one CD, great-great performance and voice, and a definitely "must have" for every person with ears. Forget the past of Garth, and listen without prejudice. Be aware, the music on the CD is not a pure country music style, and maybe not even a piece country at all. Listening the first track, I recognized the real value of this CD and it continued with each new track even though I am a fan of Garth (on the country music side). There are indeed influences from other stars like: Beatles, Bob Seger, (even Bob Dylan that I think is in the "Main Street"). This is undeniable, but Garth really did build "a performance art" with real "Herculean effort" that only he could do. You may buy this album for its music, its versatility, its influences and, above all, its genius that I assure you it's in there. Finally, listening to it, you'll reach the conclusion that this album is a reference that comprises different times in the history of music, and is, after all, one step ahead of the present.
