I honestly would give this CD a 3.5 stars but I have to give it 5 to try to outweight the morons who have written reviews here and/or rated who just DON'T get it. Garth has been painted into a corner by the dumb, closed minded, rich, white, evil record industry he is "this" and his potentially even dumber fans (what do you expect from country music listeners) want him to be X figure to them 24/7 when, in reality, Garth has far more facets. Admittedly he probably should have just came out with this under his own name... period. Sure he'd irk the country people but to heck with them, it's still a catchy CD of songs that show Garth has a lot more talent than twang. It was a good effort, sadly his last, and I say sadly because if the dumb people, dumb press, and dumb industry didn't try to champion mediocrity he could maybe do a few albums and get it right, really right, so basically music loses, fans lose, and saddest of all, Garth loses from just trying to do something different. Humanity really sucks.
Free Music Review: Awesome. This CD has left me speechless. Good Job Garth! Hit: 5 Stars
I cannot believe what a wonderful CD this is. Just when we all thought Garth Brooks did all he could do... he makes this awesome CD. I have to give alot of credit to Garth. I feel he has jeopordized his musical career by doing this CD. I was never really a big country and western fan but I have always respected Garth as a Country singer. Now, I even have more respect for Garth because he took a big gamble and I feel that it was a excellent one. I was standing in the music store sampling this CD and two ladies were not too happy about Garths new look and his new CD. Well ladies too bad... I think it is great that Garth has expanded his music into a different category. Shania Twain did it... so why not Garth. I purchased the CD and think it is wonderful. Every single song on the CD is good. My young friend Danielle, which happens to be 14, and I, who happens to be 36, love the CD. So we together believe that this will be a great CD for anyone at any age. Good Luck Garth.....
Free Music Review: Impressive Hit: 5 Stars
I,for one,am a big Garth Brooks fan as well as a fan of country music. When I first heard about this,I was a little skeptical. This was not the type of music Garth was known for.Somehow,I just didn't see it (not because of a lack of talent on Garth's behalf,I assure you. This man is talent exemplified). But,to put it mildly,I was very impressed.Garth truly rules this pop/rock as well as he does country. And the pains that was undertaken to make this fictitional character real. The inside boolet includes pictures,a discography, and even a little introduction to each song from "Chris Gaines".Fantastic (you can even turn the cover booklet over and display an alternate cover that carries the title of Chris Gaines greatest hits)The music in itself was fantastic.Full of depth, color, and emotion.I definitively recommend this selection for your collection.I leave you with this:all true Garth fans, keep an open mind.To miss out on this CD is to miss out on a true Garth Brooks treasure.
Free Music Review: Brooks doesn't suck when he writes rock Hit: 5 Stars
As an avid hater of country music, I bought this album knowing that it would be better...Brooks has been quoted as saying he prefers rock but could not break into that market. It's too bad, because this is one of my favorite albums, and I am someone who likes Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, and Coldplay.
This is a diverse album of easy listening and easy rock tunes with lots of different sounds, styles, etc. It probably illustrates that Brooks was TOO diverse for rock. Whereas Country can handle these variations, rock is a little too narrowly defined.
I gave this a five out of five deliberately. I really do like all of the songs, some better than others. The guitar work is expert, the beat is solid and the songwriting is first rate. Great songs include "That's the way I remember it", "Driftin' Away", "Unsigned Letter", and "It Doesn't Matter to the Sun".
Brooks took some krap for crossing over to the dark side, but its the best stuff he has ever done.
Free Music Review: Overlook the Chris Gaines character Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a Garth Brooks fan for a long time know. When this album came out I was at first suprised. I say "at first" because when I bought the CD and listened to it, it was clear that what Garth was really trying to do was to expand his musical horizons. His vocal ability has never sounded this impressive I think in part because of his limitation to country/rock on his previous releases. It was also impressive how they were able to create a new person with the liner notes. The character of Chris Gaines has a full biography and offers his own "notes" on how the songs were written!Standout tracks are "Lost in You," I like the tenderness and the honesty of that song; "Unsigned Letter," It sounds more Jackson Browne than Wallflowers to me; and "White Flag," The droning guitars and the high-hats sound cool. A very impressive record if you simply stop looking at through the "Garth Brooks adopting a new persona" mentallity.
