With each coming year and each new album he puts out, Gary Allan continues to be a paradox. When he emerged on the scene, country music was experiencing a wave of sound-alike hat acts. In this bland mess, Allan was overshadowed and dismissed by many as just another hat. However, he was just about the only one who seemed to have a distinctive sound and talent.(yes, even in the darkest hours, there's always a little light!) While most of his contemporaries are now long gone, Gary has matured and progressed as an artist...and he's been rewarded with increasing popularity. "Smoke Rings in the Dark" is his first masterstroke, one of the best mainstream releases of the decade. Mr. Allan focuses on the pain and sophistication of romance and the aftermath of love gone wrong. The album is filled with infectious tunes like the descriptive "Don't Tell Mama", the warm, Bakersfield sounding "Lovin' You Against My Will", and the rockabilly flavored Del Shannon remake of "Runaway". Gary is rather eclectic on this album, bringing in touches of 40s swinging bee-bop("Sorry", "Cowboy Blues") and even tips his hat to George Strait on "I'm the One". The production and musicianship is fantastic, weaving all these sounds together seemlessly into a sensual, off-beat album. The album closes with the soothing "Greenfields" where Gary sounds like his heart is finally free. Best cut of the album: the timeless and haunting title track, which is one of the songs of the century! When I first heard it, I thought 'that's awesome, haven't I heard that somewhere before?' Gary's has this wonderfull voice that combines an aching sound with howling and gristling. His style can be best described as a cross between Roy Orbison, Dwight Yoakam, and Merle Haggard. Well, I could go on about "Smoke Rings", but if your looking for a cool-country album by an artist who is an exceptional talent, pick up this CD today. I guarantee that you will not be dissapointed!
