Free Music Review: Essential Flavor of Smooth Flavored Latin Emotions

I was turn on to this not too long on Atlanta's Smooth Jazz 107.5 when they were playing "Europa" (originally recorded by Carlos Santana). Good Disc all the way through. This is how saxophonist impersario Gato Barbieri brought in it that made it go big time. Produced by the one and only Herb Alpert and plus assistance from his wife, Michelle Barbieri. Agree with the rest of the reviews here that believe it's unbelievable, essential and fill with Latin flavor and a touch of salsa and smooth reality. Jay Chattaway's CTI-based arrangements is incredible and strong with good kicks from the brass and strings. Fireflies, Fiesta, Los Desperados are thrilling with fire. Also Herbie's own "Behind the Rain" is consider yet the absolute piece of work of them all. Remember Herb's version 3 years after that on RISE? Thrill to have this at any collection.

The album on which a fire-breathing revolutionary transformed himself into a smooth Latin love man, under the guidance of producer Herb Alpert and associate producer Michelle (Mrs. Gato) Barbieri. The rhythm tracks are tight and funky in a facile '70s fuzak sort of way, and Jay Chattaway's CTI-inspired orchestrations sound dated and corny. The arrangements conspire to stifle the Third World scream in Barbieri's raw and impassioned tenor sax tone. Yet he still manages to mate the steamy temperament of the tango with upscale funk on covers of Santana's "Europa" and Marvin Gaye's "I Want You." --Rick MitchellInternational Music CDs
