Free Music Notes for Man in a Room GamblingFree Music Review: Gorgeous
I've been listening to Gavin Bryars for years, and I especially have enjoyed "The Sinking Of The Titanic" and "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet," as well as the less distinctive though beautiful "Cadman Requiem" and "Farewell to Philosophy." These are the works I was familiar with before hearing this CD. Even more than the five-part "Man in a Room, Gambling," I found the nearly nineteen-minute "Les Fiançailles" to be one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard by anyone. Being a classical bass player perhaps gives Bryars a unique sensibility concerning composition. His music often has a lonely, melancholy feeling owing to its generally slow pace and extensive use of solo or few instruments. Bryars is often labeled a minimalist (sometimes justifiably) and lumped in with Philip Glass and Terry Riley, but I find his musical palette far more varied and interesting. (Though, speaking of Philip Glass, I found my interest in his music renewed by the excellent "Philip Glass: Portrait" by Angele Dubeau & La Pieta.) As an introduction the Bryar's music, I think that "The Sinking Of The Titanic" and "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" are the best places to start, but one wouldn't go wrong with "Man in a Room, Gambling."
