Free Music Notes for ChariotFree Music Review: Amazing Artist - Inspiring Lyrics and Deep Messages Hit: 5 Stars
You would think that you would find a bunch of sappy songs given that some of his songs have been featured as theme songs for some of the WB's teen dramas, but I found the entire album to be lyrically inspiring, with many truthful messages about friendship, new love and self discovery.
Gavin sings his heart out and you can hear his soul on each song. I felt a sense of progression in each song about following a storyline from new found love to heartache to self-reflection. This album came out when I was in the midst of a crush turned true love situation, so I listened to this album over and over again for inspiration. I'll touch on how I feel each song follows that storyline (well at least my interpretation of it!):
Follow Through - One of my favorite songs - Talks about how he's found someone new and how sometimes the feeling of a new love is "so obvious to preach it"; that sometimes you're so wrapped up in the moment and everything sounds unbelievably great. But when it comes down to more than just romantic words and passionate moments - sometimes proving that you love someone requires you to follow through with actions.
Chariot - About inspiration and how that one you love can be such a huge inspiration in your life, that you'll let that other person "guide you" and "give you the strength" through everything that you go through - that this person will "take you away from this place" when you need help and inspiration the most, and how you can trust this person you love to let them do that for you.
Just Friends - Tells a story about how despite all his strong, deep feelings about this girl, maybe his love isn't reciprocated the way he feels. He sees her there with someone else, and for the first time he feels that maybe he isn't the one for her. But despite that, he knows he loves her and he "forgives her for what you've done" as long as she tells him again that "he's the one" for her. He's such a hopeless romantic that he slips back into the state where he just needs to hear those words for him to be in love all again. Take it as him being too understanding, but when you love someone so much that you don't give up and will give anything to get that second chance.
(Nice to Meet You) Anyways - This true love of his, despite him realizing that he might not mean the same to her, means so much to him that he's willing to turn down this other potential girl who was "very fine" and "amazing" and that he's "attracted" to and he's caught up in this circle of confusion but he really knows that back home he thinks he has found his true love "cause I just found someone special And that's really something special." So, nice to meet you anyway.
Chemical Party - This song sounds entirely different from the rest of the other songs on the album, and until I started writing this review, I didn't know why. This song is the first time that he felt he was no longer wrapped up in the magical illusion of his true love. She turned into a different person at this party, and that he wasn't sure if he liked this. "Oh, oh, you're still too amazing to know it - but I'm incapable of rescuing you." He sees what he thinks are flaws. Despite all his intense feelings - he begins to have his doubts.
Belief - Whether his doubts about his true love were warranted or maybe it was just because "Everyone's happy, everyone's high." Whatever it was, he probably let her know what he thought about that night. And obviously he was wrong about her because she let him feel her "wrath of a God" and her "knife in the shape of her mouth", and with him realizing this, he was quick to say that cause "I'm gonna yell it from the roof tops I'll wear a sign on my chest" and that he's going to stand by his belief about how great he thinks she is.
Crush - With the truth out, "When my pass came in, you dropped the ball" - she didn't feel the same way and he realized it wasn't true love. True love has to go both ways. He realizes that maybe the feelings were rushed - maybe it was simply a crush. But he knows he was just wrong about the girl, but not wrong about the way he felt. His feelings were real.
I Don't Want to Be - Another one of my favorite songs off the album - Talks about how despite what everyone says, about how life doesn't go your way (like with your crushes), that if you stay true to your feelings and about who you are - you can never have disappointments about going "for the steal" and staying true to yourself.
Meaning - No regrets. He has the "better to love than lost than to never have loved at all" cliché mentality - "you take a punch just to land one". You have to make that leap, to try to "steal that base", and that you "can't be afraid of heights" cause sometimes "the only way is jumping". In the end, he says "Love has a reason" and that it gives "meaning to the world" by helping you learn more about yourself.
More than Anyone - She just wants to be friends, and if she needs one he'll "be around". But one last try - he pours his heart to her. It's not just a crush for him. He loves her truly, and he'll "love you more than anyone". So if she changes her mind ever, he'll "be free for you anytime".
Overrated - In his last song, he goes from describing his feelings of love to how things would be if they ended up together. He paints a picture of their life, of how they "would be liked", of how they will share everything with each other. "Take my home Take everything I own...You will feel whole". For someone who was his chariot before, he's willing now to "fill [her] cup" and how it's her turn to trust him and "open up" and how he can and will "follow through" on his end.
So not sure if this interpretation is right, but the story of a new found crush, to strongly developed feelings of love - true love - and taking the leap and taking a chance to feel love back, and how sometimes things don't always work out the way you want it, but you never want to live with regrets. Who knows, not now, but sometime down the line, you might find true love coming back at you.
