Hit: 5 Stars

I consider myself a new Rush fan I have only been listening to Geddy Lee and the boys for 13 years or so. I was really excited the first time I heard that Geddy was going to release a solo album, especially since the last Rush album was 1996s Test for Echo. I went to Menlo Park Mall in New Jersey to get Geddy Lee's autograph and to get the album, I knew I was not going to be disappointed and I was not. No screeching with Geddy here, I just love the way Geddy's voice has matured over the years. I believe that Geddy is like a fine wine, just keeps on getting better with age.

My Favorite Headache - You can tell from the powerful opening bass line that this is a Geddy Lee album! This was the first and only single to be released, it is the most radio friendly track but it is no where near of the song caliber that is coming up next. (4.5 of 5 stars)

The Present Tense - Kick-butt guitars that come out and bite you is what I hear on this track. Great Geddy Lee lyrics on this song, they really make you think about how you're living your life. This song makes me emotional (Everybody that loves music knows what I'm talking about here) and when a song does that I have to give it my highest rating. (5 of 5 stars)

Window to the World - A definite change of pace and direction from the last two songs, the guys from Rush have perfected this throughout the years. This song will have you singing along and dancing around your living room while you're dusting off you CD collection. My only gripe on this song is that it could be longer. (4 of 5 stars)

Working at Perfekt - (yes it's spelled correct) this is probably my least favorite song on the entire album. This song is not very catchy but the orchestra in the background really helps it get out of my "clunker" rating. (3.5 of 5 stars)

Runaway Train -- One of my favorite songs on the entire album, it's a shame that he had to choose a cheesy title for the song. Come on Geddy "Runaway Train" has already been taken, I can see people requesting this song and hearing Soul Asylum instead. Great acoustical guitar and catchy chorus make this a spectacular song. (5 of 5 stars)

The Angels' Share -- Good acoustic guitar on this slow song, there they go again changing the mood of the album. Once again the orchestra sounding in the background really helps the song along, making it a very listenable song. (4 of 5 songs)

Moving to Bohemia - The weird, funky song of the album; I have no idea where Geddy is going with this song. Moving to Bohemia, why not Albuquerque, Elkhart or Miami? In Bohemia beer is free and money grows on trees which sounds good to me. For some reason this song sounds good to me too. (4 of 5 stars)

Home on the Strange - " He sleeps with a Chainsaw, Got Eyes Like an Outlaw
He Takes a Two Smoke Walk He Don't like to Talk" Sounds like an old teacher of mine. Great drumming and guitar on this song, really funky drumming and guitar but it all goes together nicely. (4 of 5 stars)

Slipping - A nice big piano comes up and hits you square on the face for this one. Changing the direction yet again with this slow methodical song, the song fits the album no surprise here. Is this a love song by Geddy Lee? I think it is a love song! (4 of 5 stars)

Still - Ok, my mistake, Working at Perfekt is not my least favorite song on the album, this one is. I just can't seem to get the grasp of this song, however I must admit at times the chorus is catchy. Slipping and Still are two songs I usually skip over when I'm listening to this album and I have access to the CD player. I guess it is just because there are two relatively slow songs right next to each other. (3.5 stars of 5)

Grace to Grace - This is simply one of the best songs that I have ever heard; this is easily the best song on the album. Great catchy chorus, great lyrics, great guitar great bass, and great drumming uuuuuugggghhhhh this song is perfect! (6 of 5 stars)

Great album, Geddy! It will hold me over till the next Rush album. The only bad things I can say about is album is that it is in an "environmentally friendly" cover and the lyrics are on the web site. Now don't get me wrong I think "environmentally friendly" is great, but the case is going to wear out long before the disk ever will. But don't let this keep you from getting this awesome album!
4.5 of 5 stars.

My Favorite Headache Poster

CD reissue of the first solo album from Rush vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee, originally released in 2000. Wounded Bird.
It's ironic that someone associated with Ayn Rand's cult of the individual would record 22 Rush albums before getting around to doing one of his own. Of course, Geddy Lee hasn't lacked self-expression as the Canadian trio's lead singer and bassist, but this first solo album does highlight interesting aspects of the esoteric rocker's talent. Recording and cowriting with Ben Mink (formerly of fellow Canadian bandF.M., but better known for his exceptional collaborations with k.d. lang), Lee's distinctive vocals sit nicely amid Beatle-esque strings on "Working @ Perfekt" and "The Angel's Share." Elsewhere, the piano-driven "Slipping" and "Still" evoke an air of personal reflection that can get lost in Rush's sonic onslaught. Yes, there's still plenty of quick riffing ("Home on the Strange" makes Yes sound restrained), overly ambitious lyrics (the title track rhymes "nihilistic" with "realistic"), and that patented, helium-tinged voice. But listening to this record could surprise many of the band's detractors, while serving as an enjoyable head-rush for fans awaiting album 23. --Bill Forman
