Gene Pitney's first hit, I Wanna Love My Life Away, is the opening track on this very good compilation CD. It has a distinctly Rockabilly edge, suited to the Buddy Holly and Everly Brothers generation. Pitney plays all the instruments on this track, as well as having written the song. A star was well and truly born.
He is often guilty of trying too hard, with vocal flourishes, falsettos and other adornments which come across as a desperate attempt to inject further drama into a song. The error is compounded by the arrangements on many of these tracks. The worst example is Every Breath I Take which, with its stuttering vocals and twirling string sounds, becomes downright ludicrous. He was a writer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer who tended to trip up over his own talent. He took time to learn when to leave well alone and let a good tune and lyric speak for themselves. One of his best vocal performances on this album is his version of Randy Newman's Nobody Needs Your Love (1966). Here at last he learns how to be expressive without exaggeration.
Artistically, his low point was re-recording Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart with the egregious Marc Almond who, although a charming youth, could not hit a note if his life depended on it (which the listener often wished it did). None of that stopped it becoming a worldwide hit, except in the US. Mercifully, that version is not included on this CD.
The high points though, are very high indeed. Hello Mary Lou is a classic that he co-write and which was a huge hit for Ricky Nelson. The (Almond-free) Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart is another immortal.
This compilation covers his years on the Musicor label, 1961-8, which are his best and most characteristic years. So it misses his very earliest and latest work. Also, it excludes his Italian and Spanish language recordings. He had a major following in the Latin countries, where a strong, expressive tenor is always appreciated. The Welsh too (witness Tom Jones) love a tenor who knows how to belt out a tune, so it's no surprise that Pitney found a large and faithful following in Wales. He returned to sell-out audiences in Cardiff year after year right up until his death in April, 2006, aged 65. He was found dead in his suite at the Cardiff Hilton the day after a sell-out concert at the St. David's Hall, which received glowing reviews for a "non-stop enthusiastic performance". So, a trouper to the end. It is worth adding that the tributes included a great many stories from fans about his kindness and approachability. Clearly a gentleman.
