Free Music Review: Genesis' Sleeper Album - A Band In Transition Triumphs Over Adversity

1978's And Then There Were Three finds Genesis in another state of transition/flux, having to deal with the departure of longtime fan favortie guitarist - and vastly underrated band member - Steve Hackett, who left after 1977's Wind and Wuthering tour. ATTWT presents compositions similar in format to Asia's 1981 debut album, in the fact that they are shorter (the longest track is Tony Banks' moody "Burning Rope at a relatively paltry 7:10), but still retaining a great deal of progressive form/structure. The 5/4 time fierce workout of "Down And Out" kicks off the album, which seems to send the message of "We are Genesis and we can still kick your ***." "Undertow"/"Ballad of Big" also feature Tony and Phil Collins predominately, which leads us to the gorgeous "Snowbound," which I feel IMHO is one of Phil Collins' best Genesis vocal perfomances. Other amazing tracks on ATTWT include Mike Rutherford's charging, emotional "Deep In The Motherlode," Tony's melancholy "Many Too Many," Phil's upbeat "Scenes From A Night's Dream" and, of course, the band's first "hit" in the U.S., the pleasant ballad "Follow You Follow Me." If you are a Genesis fan, this is a must-have. This album represents a key transitional period from the the heavy progressiveness of the mid-70s era to the advancing conservative (but still good) Genesis of the 80s.

When the departures of original frontman Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis a studio trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, few could have expected the band to climb to greater levels of commercial success. But that's exactly what happened, and Genesis' left-field rebirth as a unlikely pop act began with this album, which introduced the newly slimmed-down lineup. But that's not the whole story. While the haunting love song "Follow You, Follow Me" introduced the band to the singles charts, elsewhere the group's penchant for accessibly complex composition and evocative lyrical dramas is in force on tracks like "Deep in the Motherlode," "Burning Rope," "Down and Out," and "Ballad of Big." --Scott SchinderPop Music CDs
