Free Music Notes for Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD)Free Music Review: Genesis' live albums get a sonic makeover on this box set Hit: 5 Stars
The newest box set from Genesis entitled Genesis Live 1973-2007 is a must for all Genesis fans.
The box set contains remixed and remastered versions of four of the band's five official live albums which are 1973's Genesis Live, 1977's masterpiece Seconds Out, 1982's excellent Three Sides Live and a re-sequenced/re-edited version of the 2-part 1992/93 release The Way We Walk. The box was overseen by Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks and guitarist/bass player Mike Rutherford and was remastered and remixed by Nick Davis, who worked on the band's previous box sets of studio albums and with Genesis since 1991's We Can't Dance. There's also an empty slot in the box to put in 2007's Live Over Europe so fans wouldn't complain and cry about owning another copy. Also as an added bonus, you get a CD and 5.1 DVD of the band's complete Live At The Rainbow Theater concert from late 1973 (a bulk of the set had already appeared on the 1998 now deleted Genesis Archive 1967-75 box set)! There's also an excellent 52-page booklet, with insights from the band members, stellar in concert photographs of the band taken from many years of live concerts. This box set just kicks.
Genesis Live was the band's only proper live album with original lead singer Peter Gabriel (see review). The original release from 1973 had only five songs but is now expanded with five bonus tracks from the 1975 Lamb Lies Down On Broadway show in Los Angeles which had appeared on Genesis Archive 1967-75 being "Back In NYC", "Fly On A Windshield", "Broadway Melody Of 1974", "Anyway" and "The Chamber Of 32 Doors". I think this was done as the master tapes which had "Supper's Ready" from the Genesis Live recordings were lost. Who knows. However, the poorest sounding live disc Genesis ever released now sounds much better.
1977's Seconds Out (see review) was the first Genesis double live album with drummer Phil Collins as singer and Chester Thompson as touring drummer and swan song with classic era guitarist Steve Hackett (see review). It was recorded mainly in Paris in 1977 on the Wind and Wuthering tour (sans "The Cinema Show" recorded in 1976 in Scotland on the A Trick of the Tail Tour with drummer Bill Bruford). The sound is phenomenal and the slipcase packaging is good but the CDs can get damaged from consistently sliding so I put the CDs and DVD in a jewel case so they won't get further damage from sliding in and out. On the initial pressings of this box set Rhino/Atlantic released and many bought from here, there were a couple of CD glitches. The second song on CD 1 "The Carpet Crawlers" starts to play, only to re-start itself before it plays properly (the intro was accidentally attached to the end of "Squonk" then "Carpet Crawlers" re-starts). The exact same problem happens again with the second song on CD 2 "The Cinema Show". The beginning was accidentally attached to the end of "Supper's Ready". It also begins to play, and then re-starts. Rhino are taking proper steps to correcting the glitches and is offering to send corrected discs to those who have faulty CDs. Just send an email to Rhino's email department and they'll take care of it. I had a defected one but got corrected copy from Rhino in mail and put corrected CDs in a jewel case.
1982's Three Sides Live (see review) (was the only live Genesis album to reach the US Top 10 and was the first with touring guitarist Daryl Stuermer) was mostly recorded in 1981 on the Abacab tour in the US and UK, as well as some concluding live material taken from the Duke, And Then There Were Three and A Trick Of The Tail tours respectively. This re-issue replicates the UK release of the album. Happily, the track index problems of the last three tracks that plagued the 1994 remaster have been thankfully corrected.
The Way We Walk was recorded on the We Can't Dance tour from 1992 (was almost Phil Collins' final tour with the band until he returned in 2007 along with Stuermer and Thompson). This is a superb re-sequencing of the live album, as the original release cut the album into two separate albums being Volume 1 : The Shorts (which had all of the shorter hit songs) and Volume 2 : The Longs (which had the longer pieces). This new version of The Way We Walk sees the tracklisting re-sequenced to make it like a full show from 1992 on 2-CDs plus adds "Turn It On Again" to the album (an excellent version I may add as well). Then the songs from the Invisible Touch Tour that were on Volume 1 The Shorts are added at the end of CD 2.
The bonus live album Live At The Rainbow 1973 is superb. The highlights are "The Cinema Show" and "The Battle of Epping Forest" which were not released before ("Dancing With the Moonlit Knight", "I Know What I Like", "Firth of Fifth", "More Fool Me" and "Supper's Ready" had been issued on Genesis Archive 1967-75). The other two songs being "Watcher of the Skies" and "The Musical Box" are on the DVD but left off CD due to time constraints (but are available as free downloads from the official Genesis website if you are a member of Official Genesis fan club). I made a CD of full show with the versions from Live at the Rainbow, the Archive box and the downloads from the official Genesis site onto 2-CDRs and the concert is phenomenal.
Insert Live Over Europe into the empty slot (I grabbed another one and why not) and the Genesis live box set is complete!

Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD) PosterGenesis Live 1973-2007 gathers the four live albums recorded by the legendary British group from 1973 to 1992. Featuring brand new stereo mixes, the boxed set also includes the long-awaited release in stereo and 5.1 of Live At The Rainbow 1973 only available with this collection. Genesis Live 1973 - 2007 11 disc boxed set that includes: Genesis Live, the band's first Top 10 album in the UK, recorded in Leicester and Manchester and issued in 1973, and featuring the classic line-up of Tony Banks (keyboards), Phil Collins (drums, vocals), Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute), Steve Hackett (guitars) and Mike Rutherford (bass, guitars). Genesis Live, for this box-set release, has been extended to feature five bonus tracks recorded at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles on January 24, 1975 and the full album is also presented in 5.1 for the first time. The double set Seconds Out, a Top 5 entry in 1977 that documented the group s Paris dates as a quartet with Collins on lead vocals following Gabriel's departure in 1975. The tour featured touring drummers Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson. Exclusive to this boxed set, Seconds Out is presented in stereo and 5.1 versions. Three Sides Live, a #2 album in the U.K. in 1982, mostly showcasing the Banks-Collins-Rutherford incarnation augmented by Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer. The Way We Walk, finally sees these two live albums resequenced as per the original show's set list. Originally released separately and entitled Vol I: The Shorts, which made the Top 3 in Britain in 1992, and Vol 2: The Longs, this was the band s sixth # 1 album, and their only concert recording to top the charts in 1993. Recorded in London by the Banks-Collins-Gabriel-Hackett-Rutherford lineup, Live At The Rainbow 1973 expands on the live material first issued on the Archive 1967-1975 boxed set in 1998 and will delight die-hard fans of that period in their lengthy career. The concert from October 1973 features most of Selling England By The Pound at the time of its release, along with the conceptual piece 'Supper's Ready' and 'Watcher Of The Skies' from their breakthrough album Foxtrot, and 'The Musical Box' from Nursery Cryme, the last two titles on 5.1 version only. Genesis Live 1973 2007 has been designed to incorporate space for the most recent live Genesis release - the 2-CD set Live Over Europe 2007. All albums feature brand new stereo mixes created by Tony Banks, Nick Davis, and Mike Rutherford, while Genesis Live, Seconds Out and Live At The Rainbow 1973 all feature 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound versions.
