Free Music Notes for Invisible Touch (W/Dvd)

Free Music Review: worse than previous Genesis albums, but still... I love it
Hit: 5 Stars

The most interesting thing about the Invisible Touch album is that it's *totally* stuck in the mid 80's recording technology. Every single moment just reeks... er, delights listeners in drum machines, overbearing bass work, glossy production, etc.

With that in mind... perhaps the reason I'm so willing to defend the album despite its severely dated sound is because I remember when it came out. I was 5 years old, and 1986 was simply the worst year of my life. Family issues involving frequent hospital visits, many trips to Delaware, car accidents, etc. Hearing this album tonight really brought back all those horrible events that dominated my life back when it came out.

However, there's really no more negative feelings towards either this album or the entire year of 1986. What happened in the past *belongs* in the past. Besides, it was *24 years ago*. So I approached it with a completely fresh point of view. While listening, I didn't consider either the horrible way it was recorded or the horrible events I had to endure the year it was released.

The title song is a catchy little slice of pop perfection. I can see how it would drive some people crazy (especially those who remember just how *often* it was played on FM radio- yes I remember too!) but, well, I haven't actually heard it on any radio station in several years (not that I actively seek out radio stations anymore, mind you) so I can appreciate a good vocal melody when I hear it.

I've always had mixed feelings with "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight". For one thing it's too long. However I don't know exactly how I'd shorten it. I don't want to take out the jungle-like middle section because that part is atmospherically cool. The chorus is my biggest problem with it. It just sounds so lazy the way Phil carelessly repeats the line "We're gonna make it right tonight, tonight ton-i-i-ght, ooooh The older version of Genesis would have found a better use for it, I believe. Actually the older version of Genesis would have known it's not memorable enough to even lay down on tape (either the Gabriel or Collins years). However, the point here is that despite its flaws, I was able to appreciate it more tonight than I had in the past.

"Land of Confusion" is totally awesome. I LOVE the chorus and the lyrics "There's too many people making too many problems and not enough love to go around". A line that will remain relevant until the end of time, perhaps.

Oh man, way to stink it up Phil! I'm talking about "In Too Deep". Well I suppose Phil's popular solo career at the time was destined to rear its ugly head into the wrong picture- in this case the picture being the superior and musically more interesting Genesis. What a terrible ballad! It should have been left to a solo Phil Collins album where I'd never even have to give it a second look. Yes my friends- I make a VERY clear distinction between Genesis and Phil's solo career. I love one, hate the other.

Side two is quite awesome. "Anything She Does" is a magnificent pop song, and now I'm beginning to notice a theme that every song mentions women in some shape or form. Well not *every* one, I suppose. Anyway, this is a good sequel of sorts to the similar sounding title song. The multi-part nature of "Domino" is pretty much completely good, though I do tend to lose interest around the halfway point for whatever reason. It might grow on me though. Perhaps 10 minutes is just overwhelming to me, which would be unfortunate considering I'm a progressive rock fan.

For some reason I don't hate "Throwing It All Away". It doesn't make me cringe like "In Too Deep". Now talk about a splendid way to wrap things up- "The Brazilian" takes advantage of the good sides of the 80's by frequently repeating a big clunky riff perhaps, but it works REALLY well and sounds awesome. I love it.

Overall, yeah, it's probably my least favorite Genesis album up to this point, but I can't find any real serious flaws besides "In Too Deep". I say pick it up today.
