Free Music Notes for Live Over Europe

Free Music Review: Fantastic Recording
Hit: 5 Stars

I attended this concert in Pittsburgh and was somewhat disappointed with that show. I admit I am a Gabriel fan- hence enjoy the older stuff. While the production was top notch at this show, the sound quality was horrible. I think they spent too much on lighting and not enough on sound, and I was in front of the soundboard. I also think Phils actions on stage were lame and took away from the momentum or energy by taking five minutes to point to different sections of the arena.

Having said that, I bought this set and was not disappointed at all. The sound quality is by far one of the best live recordings I have ever heard. Few bands are able to record a live show with decent sound (e.g. Pink Floyd or Roger Waters probably have some of the best live recordings soundwise). Every instrument is perfectly balanced, to this day I am amazed on how good this recording can sound. Highlights for me include In the Cage, Firth of Fifth, Mama, Los Endos, and Carpet Crawlers.

You do not hear Phil doing his lame act, just a good overview of their career. One can debate setlists and how other songs should have been included or the way they were arranged (which is fair), but I will stick to what they do give you- two discs of perfectly recorded music.

While I am not a fan of many songs including Hold On My Heart, Follow You, and esp. Invisible Touch and I Can't Dance, the few gems and the perfection of the recording make this a must have for the price- a great value for two discs.

Now a note of caution. The Taurus Pedals on this recording hit subsonic lows. I do not have a good stereo in my vehicle, and these ultra low notes will distort the music. I noticed this on Los Endos more than any other song. If you have a good home stereo, it honestly feels like an earthquake at high volumes.

Free Music Review: *** GENESIS -- THE ULTIMATE LIVE BAND ***
Hit: 5 Stars

These guys just keep on going! I had the privilege to see them in San Jose during the TIOA tour and they displayed just as much power and majesty as ever before. This newest live album, which is culled from various European gigs, shows just how incredible the guys are, and although they're getting on in years (aren't we all?) their sound is still energetic and timeless.

Notable highlights are Gabriel-era classics such as "In the Cage" and "I Know What I Like", and mainstream hits like "Land of Confusion" and "I Can't Dance." There are even snippets of "Duke's Travels / Duke's Ends" scattered throughout a couple of the medley songs, which was a personal treat for me since "Duke" is one of my favorite albums. The mix is spot on (good rich bass and keys) and Phil's vocals sound as crisp and clear as ever. Tony's keys are still swirling and thundering, and we all know how Mike and Daryl can crank out the guitar magic. Pay close attention to Chester's drumming during "In The Cage", he's hitting those toms like a mad man!

The tour itself was quite magical, as Genesis sold out many dates in Europe and packed houses in the states as well. I'm not sure if we'll see a "Live Over America" album or not, but for those who witnessed the tour this new live album will bring back tons of memories. 2007 has been a great year for Genesis fans: a new tour, this new live album, Encore CD releases, the first of three boxsets released, new books, etc. Hopefully Phil and company will realize the demand for their music is as high as ever, and perhaps another album and / or tour will occur in the future.....:-)

Free Music Review: Mature and outstanding musicianship
Hit: 5 Stars

With this live set from their 2007 tour, Genesis confirms that even though they took very bad decisions commercializing their music, their superb musicianship cannot be denied. Genesis has always been an imaginative band from a musical point of view, and here, with outstanding performances on tracks like IN THE CAGE, SECOND HOME BY THE SEA, and FIRTH OF FIFTH, to name a few, nothing can be said on the contrary. The mature sound they deliver with their acute mix and stage sound cohesion confirms their consciousness on plasticity. Genesis has always been a theatrical band, even in their more commercial stage, and the theatrics not being only on the level of performance and lyrics. The musical arrangements, effects and selection of colors of their instruments and sounds, all form part of the Genesis style and blueprint. For example, on the instrumental passages of their classic era songs, Tony Banks retains the essentials and original sounds on his keyboards, but upgrading them to fit the crispness and clarity delivered through 21 century technology. The result: a powerful, organic and rounded cluster of synthesized sound, interwoven with an up-to-the-face percussion ensemble via Chester Thompson and Phil Collins, and colored all up by Rutherfords and Stuermers playfull and inventive guitars, basses and bass pedals. With this record, Genesis proves that a new Genesis era of studio recordings would be up to the challenge, and would deliver great new songs, sounds and tapestries. Imagine what could happen if Gabriel and Hackett hop on the ride: As sure as eggs is eggs...Heaven.

Free Music Review: Best live Genesis since Seconds Out
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw one of the 3 shows in Chicago, and as people have said, it's a very good representation of the show.
Yes, there are some key changes, but they really don't affect the feeling of the songs much at all.
Yes, there are some shortened and 'medley-ed' versions of some things, but the band has been doing this ever since Seconds Out.
Compared to 3 Sides Live, this tour and recording is gigantically superior. You're never going to hear a lamer version of 'Turn It On', for instance, than on that record.
I feel they've really finally corrected some blatant injustices to a number of their great songs that they had committed numerous times from the 80's on through in live performances.
I got the feeling, listening to the CD, that they finally 'got it'- that they need to represent in some way what was great about the original song, even if it is done in a slightly different way, instead of a caricature of it.
There is a power, energy, and beauty in a lot of the performances that in the past has been lacking.

Free Music Review: regreso a los origenes
Hit: 5 Stars
