Free Music Notes for Live Over EuropeFree Music Review: Turning It On Again Never Sounded So Good Hit: 4 Stars
There have been so many classic rock type reunions over the past three or four years, and sadly most of those have vastly paled in comparison to their former greatness of the '70s and '80s. Like many Genesis fans, I was a little concerned that after shaking off the dust of 15 years without Phil Collins that the band would not sound a good as they once did, but I was plesantly surprised. Genesis still sound great in 2007 and the set list offered on their Turn It On Again 2007 tour was a nice hybrid between radio hits like "Land of Confusion", "No Son of Mine", "Invisible Touch" and "Follow You Follow Me" meshed with a fan favorites like "Ripples", "In The Cage", "Behind The Lines" and "Los Endos." Purists may note that some of the material has been dropped down a step or two, most likely due to Phil's aging voice (which still sounds very good by the way), but the passive fan won't notice and in most instances, the material still works beautifully.
The double disc set was recorded at various nights on the first leg of the tour spanning various European countries like Italy, England, Poland, France, Germany and more. The booklet is also a great souvuiner of the tour, filled with great photos. The CD (at least the first pressing) also includes an attractive slipcase. All in all, its a real quality item and the rich sound and excellent performances make it a must for any Genesis fan. I strongly recommend it along with their DVD for the 2007 tour, When in Rome Genesis 2007, which was recorded in its entirety in Rome, Italy in front of an estimated half-million Genesis fans! We know what we like!
Free Music Review: Nice tour souvenir and overview of career Hit: 4 Stars
The CD to me was a souvenir to the fans of this tour.
Having seen Phil solo and with Genesis, I can tell that the audiences are very different. The solo Phil fans going to a Genesis show are probably going to be bored until they do "the hits". Which they did.
The one thing missing from the CD, the HUGE screen. I don't think the solo translates to CD as well as watching Phil and Chester play it, you can find it on You Tube for the time being.
Keep in mind, it wasn't that long ago that Phil said he was done playing live shows because of his hearing. So for the past 2 tours, it's been about putting closure with the fans while he can still play good enough and sing just enough before age puts limits on him.
Other than a possible Rock Hall induction and Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett agreeing to tour (and you can bet if it does happen, Phil and Peter will be exchanging lead vocals just because it would be hard for PG to sing some of those challenging songs) this is going to be it as far as they go.
This tour had no opening act. It was just them for 3 hours with a short break.
There's enough documented on them live (other than the Lamb tour) to see and hear them over the years and get that they were and still are a great live band, but you will be pleasantly surprised that most of it is as good as anything they've done in the past 30 years and believe it or not, some of the excellent drum playing is Phil and not Chester covering. It's not "Seconds Out" or "Three Sides Live", but to me it's on par with "The Way We Walk".
Free Music Review: Genesis return for the fun of it. Hit: 4 Stars
First off, I have all of their albums. I saw this tour in Chicago when they came through there and it was alot of fun. Now, I don't care about the key changes to accomodate Phil's voice. Personally, I wanted to see Phil there rather than Ray Wilson who took over for Phil when Phil left for the Calling All Stations album and tour. The energy of the band as a whole however I think was a bit lacking. Musically they were dynamite though! This 2-disc album is the entire setlist. They do not include Phil's between song banter though. For those wanting that, pick up any of the band's shows from this tour. They are available unedited as official recordings. The sound for Live Over Europe is quite solid. I had one problem with this set though. They list the song Turn It On Again as being from Amsterdam. This is entirely incorrect. It is actually from Manchester. While this is a minor mistake, thanks to that, you cant trust any of the other songs as far as where the recordings were taken from and that bothers me somewhat. You would think they could get something as simple as that correct you know?? Anyway, I recommend the set as a whole for a look at their reunion tour taken from different venues throughout Europe. You just won't really know for sure the source for each song. Ughhhh
Free Music Review: genesis-reborn! Hit: 4 Stars
I really don't see much wrong about this recording! Sure, the guys are alittle older now,but if you happen to have the songs that are on this recording on another recording done by the same guys, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy and hear alittle bit of an updated version of that same music!( the only thing I put a mark on is Phil Collins using the "F" word in the song 'Invisible Touch' ) - He didn't need to do that! -
But overall, you will notice more drumming in the songs done and its very enjoyable to have playing on your cd player! ( I skip 'Invisible Touch' completely now because of the word used by Phil - and I'm a Phil Collin's fan to boot ) I wish he would have remained that 'clean Phil' during that song and left the dirty language back where it came from!
Anyway, its good to see the guys back in action again and I hope that they won't stay away to long until they make another recording! ( but I think that might be 1 of those wonderful dreams we all have )
Go get a copy and enjoy alittle ride from the past, brought up to date with the guys!!!
Free Music Review: A solid live album, worth the wait Hit: 4 Stars
As a fan of Genesis, I was eager to hear the first new album with Phil Collins in the lead in over a decade. I thuroughly enjoyed this live album. Even though it was recorded over multiple dates to get the best performance out of each song, it sounds like it was a continuous recording. Kudos to the engineering crew.
I liked the fact that they played different songs on the record. Except for Abacab, there is at least 1 song from every record starting with Selling England By The Pound (1973). So there is more of a "timeline" feel to this collection.
My only complain, I suppose, is Father Time. A lot of their songs were played on a different key and at a slightly slower tempo than in years past, partly due to Phil Collins' aged vocal cords. But musically, they haven't missed a beat.
So for any true Genesis fan, especially for those who grew up with Phil singing lead, I would say that this is a must.
