Genesis was the master of creating musical melodies and moments which were reaching to the center of our hearts and into our souls. Very often these vocal parts were created and delivered by Peter Gabriel but even later on after his departure they were continued fairly well by Phil Collins. The music of Genesis, in a similar way to the music of Yes, was building up into the gorgeous instrumental overtures exploding in moments full of emotion. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway contains more of such emotional thresholds than any other album of Genesis. I ended up picking TLLDOB as my favorite album of theirs but for me it is a very close call between this double album, Foxtrot and Nursery Crime. The Musical Box, one of their most beautiful and my favorite song is a part of Nursery Crime and The Supper Is Ready, an amazing suite was released on Foxtrot. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is one the most quintessential albums of a progressive symphonic rock era. Unlike the beauty of Close To The Edge or Tales From Topographic Oceans, the power of music coming to us from TLLDOB comes in small segments of beauty, broken up, but all together creating a masterful experience full of feeling and sympathy for the main character of their complex story and the concept behind it. The double album is composed of 23 songs 9 of each are not even 3 minute long and another 5 fall below 4 minutes. However, they all transition into each other very well, creating a long overture of various shorter moods falling together well and quite fitting for telling the story about the split personality of its main character. It is the beauty of many keyboard driven passages and the sound of Peter's voice which makes this work so appealing to me. Some phrases and sentences always seemed to have affected me the most: `there's sunshine in my stomach like I just rocked my baby to sleep' is one of these pictures painted which to me mean more than a long elaborate text. Or: `If I keep self control I'll be safe in my soul. And the childhood belief brings a moment's relief, but my cynic soon returns and the lifeboat burns. My spirit just never learns.' And again: `I need someone to believe in, someone to trust. I'd rather trust a countryman than a townman. You can judge by his eyes, take a look if you can. He'll smile through his guard, survival trains hard. I'd rather trust a man who works with his hands. He looks at you once, you know he understands. Don't need any shield, when you're out in the field.' And: `I'd rather trust a man who doesn't shout what he's found'. While performing this rock opera (I guess we can call it that) on stage throughout 1975 Peter Gabriel was introducing listeners to the first 6 songs, then again to the next 5 and again to the following 12 songs by coming on stage and explaining what was going to happen to the main character, to assure the maximum involvement of his audience. By doing that, dressed in different one of his costumes every time, he was truly mesmerizing the audience. He brought their interest to the forefront and then he and the rest of the band made them experience emotions far exceeding their expectations. With their Lamb Lies Down On Broadway a very successful Genesis of their prior work took our small earth by storm and assured a great interest in the future albums coming from this band as well as from all of their members. It almost got to the point where the colossal success of this album forced them to break up, as there was no space for them to grow together. The earth was becoming too small for them... I am obviously joking, but I guess on the creative level it was getting a little crowded inside for these successful and capable musicians. At some point (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was the final moment of it) there were enough composers in that band to keep 4 bands well and alive. Peter Gabriel was the first of this group to announce his departure (most likely because the obsession of fans with his persona was unjust and started to create harmful energy on the inside). The next one was Steve Hackett whose solo albums have been coming to us for over 30 years now, with the newest one being released in a few days. Tony Banks was another composer whose talents are very visible on TLLDOB. Phil Collins does not need any introduction. Genesis was one of the most influential bands of my life, starting with their first album From Genesis To Revelation (1969) (although I did not know this album until much later) through Trespass (1970), Nursery Crime (1971), Foxtrot (1972), Selling England By The Pound (1973), The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974), A Trick Of The Tail (1976), Wind And Wuthering (1976), And Then There We Three (1978) to Duke (1980) and Abacab (1981). Some of my favorite songs by Genesis are the following: Supper Is Ready, Hairless Heart, Counting Out Time, The Carpet Crawlers, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, Where The Sour Turns To Sweet, Snowbound, One For The Vine, Lover's Leap, Anyway, Undertow, The Musical Box, Horizon's, In Hiding, Many Too Many, Firth Of Fifth, Fly On The Windshield, Broadway Melody Of 1974, Cuckoo Cocoon.
