Free Music Review: One of their best.

A TRICK OF THE TAIL is one of Genesis' finest albums ever. Phil Collins takes the reins of lead singer from Peter Gabriel with vigor and sweep, but with something else Gabriel didn't quite have---warmth. Collins' vocals on MAD MAN MOON and RIPPLES have a simple grace to them that I don't think Gabriel would've quite been able to match, although on the louder pieces (DANCE ON A VOLCANO, SQUONK and ROBBERY, ASSAULT AND BATTERY) he more than holds his own with the same declamatory style of singing Gabriel employed. Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Collins (in the drum chair) more than retain the ensemble feel they'd honed during the 4 previous albums on which they'd played together. You get the sense that nothing feels out of place here and that the band is functioning more AS a band than before.

I wish they'd continued down this road instead of going off into the "hit singles" arena, but such is life. There really isn't a bad track in the whole album, the extras that come with this new reissue are all worth it, and, now as then, ATOTT just might feature Genesis at their best as a band.
