Free Music Review: Their Best Post Gabriel
Hit: 4 Stars

For some, Genesis ceased to exist after Peter Gabriel left the group, but I think one misses out on some great material if they take that attitude. Case in point is "Wind & Wuthering" from 1976. Genesis had already survived the departures of drummers Chris Stewart, John Silver, and John Mayhew, and more notably Anthony Phillips. In fact, the group had prospered quite well with replacements the caliber of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett. "Trick of the Tail" had shown that the group had survived, "Wind & Wuthering" showed that it could still prosper. It would be the last studio album before the group would reduce in size again as Steve Hackett departed after the tour which produced the live album "Seconds Out". The group moved from progressive to pop after this album, though perhaps that categorization isn't completely fair.

"Eleventh Earl of Mar" opens the album a wonderful song which takes its subject matter from history. "One for the Vine" is my personal favorites on the album, taking a look at faith, and the way humanity responds to spiritual leaders in the wrong way. Banks uses vague references to not target any specific faith, but still manages to make an insightful comment. "Your Own Special Way" is a love song, which is somewhat sappy, but then again sap works for a lot of people, and not too surprisingly this song was a fairly big hit. "Wot Gorilla?" is an interesting instrumental piece which closes out the first half of the album.

"All in a Mouse's Night" is a song from a mouse's point of view which is somewhat unusual, but adds to the diversity of the album as far as subject matter goes. "Blood on the Rooftops" is another top notch cut with some wonderful guitar work. The song itself seems to be for those people who have no life of their own and watch endless amounts of TV, and there are numerous references to TV programs from England at that time. "Unquiet Slumber for the Sleepers..." and "...In That Quiet Earth" are two instrumentals which are combined into one track on the CD I have. "Afterglow" is the album closer, and it became the group's concert closer for many years as well. A simple song, it is still a beautiful piece and a fan favorite.

The weaknesses of this album are few, yet significant. The biggest one is the lack of Steve Hackett's guitar. Only on "Blood on the Rooftops" do we get a decent amount of his work, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is the reason he left the group. I don't dislike Banks' work, but one can only wonder how good the group would have been with some more balance. The second problem is there are too many instrumentals on this album. Three of nine tracks, and of course long instrumental sections of many of the other songs leaves the album short on lyrical content. Without Peter Gabriel's lyrical input, the group is clearly suffering. That being said, this is a good album, just not all it could have been.

Wind & Wuthering Poster

Digitally remastered reissue of the 1976 album by the esteemed Prog/Rock band featuring a new stereo mix of the album. This reissue features the new mix of the album's original tracks (sans bonus tracks) yet adds a new breath of fresh air on these classic recordings. Nine tracks including 'Your Own Special Way', 'Afterglow' and 'Blood On The Rooftops'. EMI. 2008.
On this 1976 album, the group's second after Phil Collins took over lead vocal duties from Peter Gabriel, Genesis continues to make art-rock that's both accessible and emotional, if less overly quirky than with the Gabriel-fronted lineup. The extended epics "Eleventh Earl of Mar" and "One for the Vine" showcase the group's still-sharp progressive instincts, while "Wot Gorilla?" and "All in a Mouse's Night" demonstrate a gently eccentric sense of humor. Meanwhile, the lilting love song "Your Own Special Way" presages the string of romantic ballads that would soon make Genesis a world-class hit machine. --Scott Schinder
