Free Music Review: George's Favorite Recordings

Although Jungle Rot is George's most "known" album, he'll tell you (I'm his current bass player) that he'd prefer that you listen to I Can Hear The Ants Dancin or 2007's Rags In Skull, where he progressed a long way as both a writer, engineer and guitarist. He thanks those who purchased JR, but encourages them to look more into his work beyond that record, which is way more representative of where he is now.

While Jungle Rot is the sound of mostly one young guy at home with a very limited knowledge of both the guitar and recording technology overdubbing guitar, bass and vocals on a reel to reel , with drum overdubs added in a low budget commercial studio later on, Ants Dancin was recorded mostly live by a full band, making it a very different animal. This expanded CD edition collects both the original 300 copy only cassette release (re-issued as 1000 copy vinyl in the mid 90's) and adds the 1977 "Blowin' Smoke" single as well as selected tracks from the 1985 Silent Bones EP and the 1986 Dutch import LP Human Scrawl Vagabond LP, which was a worldwide underground "hit" in it's own right.

On Ants, George has progressed immensely as a guitarist and as a result (to the dismay of some) he's getting more into instrumental music here, just like some of his heroes Harvey Mandel and Soft Machine, and even considered transforming Split into a total instrumental outfit, to the chagrin of his bandmates who were more interested in playing popular cover tunes in their neighborhood bars. Their later projects are mostly forgotten, while George continues to attract legions of new fans, young and old, who have discovered his old releases through these reissues, and his most recent music as well.
