Just about everytime since 1976 Harrison released an album, critics and fans said it was his best since All Things Must Pass (barring Somewhere in England and Gone Troppo). The same criticisms about his spirituality and his lack of 'pop' sensibility or what sells at any given moment did not blur the fact that of the 4 solo Beatles, his had the greatest depth and clarity of vision. He never went back on things he said before, he stuck true to his convictions and compromised for no one's appraisal. The 1979 'George Harrison' album is one of the most beautifully played and gorgeous sounding Harrison release, with wonderful love songs, acute observations about people and relationships, and his sense of humour coming through. 'Your Love Is Forever' is 1979's 'Something'.

Cloud Nine spoke to the pop audience, and again its said Harrison had the talents to be the top of the pops when he wanted to. Of the 4, the most successful 'chart wise' has been McCartney, but surprisingly enough, Harrison is next in line, especially when you don't discount Ringo's successful ventures in the charts were Harrison produced, supported or co-written.
The fact is, Harrison never made a COMEBACK. He always had the talent to be top of the pops, but it didn't interest him. It seems to be that it was the last thing on his mind.

BRAINWASHED I approached upon release with a great amount of sadness. He was already gone, and this was to be the last we ever will hear of this man who never got the credit he deserved as a humanitarian, as an artist, as the introducer of eastern idealogy to the western masses, as the first pop idol to use his name to save lives, the saviour of the dying British film industry, the first Beatle to make social commentary in their song catalogue (Taxman) when they were decreed simply a pop band. The world did not realise what it had missed, but I, and others who thoroughly appreciated the beauty that was George Harrison knew the loss. This was the man when asked if The Beatles were getting back together for The Concert for Bangladesh, shot back at the reporter, 'don't you think we should be talking about the people who are dying in Bangladesh.' The man of principles and great spiritual conviction was gone. The man who backed Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' when no one else would touch it, proved that the public and media had no concept of what Harrison was about, and did not understand the irony that the film itself and its producer presented.

BRAINWASHED is Harrison in great form. At first 'Stuck Inside A Cloud' didn't hit me right away. Songs like 'Brainwashed', 'Pisces Fish', 'Looking For My Life' and 'Run So Far' did. Harrison's sense of melody is every bit as good as McCartney's ever is, but his lyrics have always been deep and meaningful whereas McCartney's ...to me.... aren't. And then 'Stuck Inside A Cloud' hit me. Beneath the slightly cheery music is such a sad song of isolation and feeling alone and scared, that I can now not hear the song without sadly singing along and feeling every portion of what Harrison was trying to put across.

I'll say that this is Harrison's best work since All Things Must Pass to satisfy those that keep judging it against that. And then I'll say I'm so sorry this was the last thing we are going to hear from this man. He had so many good things to say about the spirit, and the mind, and the heart, all throughout his solo career and in The Beatles, that things have just not been the same for me since he died. A huge part of my heart went with him, but I don't mind so much. It was a good part.
