Free Music Notes for George Harrison

Free Music Review: Welcome News
Hit: 5 Stars

The rerelease of several "middle period" George Harrison albums is welcome news to both Beatles fans and pop/rock music fans in general. All of the albums that have now been made available on CD contain many songs worth reacquainting oneself with or discovering for the first time. But I think this album represents his best effort in this period and it, like much of his work, is terribly underrated. "Love Comes to Everyone" would have been right at home on "Rubber Soul", and there are several other cuts on this CD that display gracefully the familiar mixture of sweetness, melodicism, and that distinctive guitar sound that constitute Harrison's style at its best.

Perhaps it is a blessing that so many of these albums have been unavailable for such a long time on CD. If any artist deserves a reevaluation, it's Harrison, who always seems vulnerable to the invidious comparison: he's good but he is no Lennon or McCartney. While there is truth in that, there is also truth in the fact that too much of his work has been dismissed all too easily. If he is no John or Paul, he nonetheless is a superb craftsman and song writer who just happened to find himself always in the shadows of his legendary bandmates. Maybe now with so much time having passed since the Beatles and with the lack of familiarity with the newly rereleased material that its absence has caused, we can begin to rediscover Harrison's immense gifts and appreciate them on their own terms. He wrote a lot of beautiful music and it deserves to be heard.

Free Music Review: This one'll make you cry
Hit: 5 Stars

Before I begin this review, I'd like to take this opportunity to offer the disclaimer that I am a hopeless George fan, and very biased in this review. I adore his cool style, his unique yet beautiful voice, his singing slide guitar, his poetic words and stirring music...and I miss him deeply. And few albums make me miss him more than this one.

"George Harrison" might best be described as a sort of "mystical folk" album. A magical, almost sparkling sound seems to emit from the instruments, and the result is spectacular. The songs have been finely crafted, and George's voice is in splendid shape all around. Words, melody and music come together in just the right way to make an excellent disc that (I think) everyone ought to have in their collection.

The mood is mostly mellow for this album, but that doesn't mean that the songs are dull! Not in the least. From the soaring melodies of "Faster," "Blow Away" and "Your Love is Forever" to the slinky groove of "Not Guilty" and "Soft-Hearted Hana," -- the elegant styling of "Here Comes the Moon," "Dark Sweet Lady" and "Soft Touch" to the feel-good sound of "Love Comes to Everyone" and "If You Believe" -- nothing on this disc will fail to enchant. It's the creme of Harrison's crop.

Although I recommend everything George has done, I recommend this one especially highly. It'll make you feel like you could fly through the clouds...and it might make you cry. It's that beautiful.

Free Music Review: My Favorite George Album ...
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't care what anyone says, this has always been my favorite George Album. I love All Things Must Pass, but Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production of it makes it a bit over the top for contemporary listening. George even said that himself. This album though, simply titled "George Harrison" is a wonderful masterpiece that was appreciated when it was released in 1979, but hasn't gotten it's due since. It is one of the LAST albums that George produced that still sounded, for lack of a better word, "Beatley". More than a few of these tracks would comfortably fit on a Beatles album. This is true of most of George's work in the '70's, when the breakup was still fresh and all four of the guys were dealing with the huge issues and insecurities that surrounded it. I think all of them did some of their best work during this time -- really. There was a lot of pressure for all of them during this time, and back then none of us listening figured they were measuring up -- but we were comparing them to the BEATLES. When you listen to these songs now, many years after all the baggage has washed away, you're left with A LOT of really good stuff that is just a joy to listen to -- like this.

Great job on the remastering -- I haven't heard a decent reproduction of "Blow Away" in over 25 years -- I really missed it and I'm glad to have it back.

Free Music Review: Shimmeringly romantic, magical and tropical
Hit: 5 Stars

One of the most romantic albums ever recorded. Every song flows perfectly into the next and takes the listener on a journey of warmth, magic and romance. The songs Dark Sweet Lady, Your Love Is Forever, Here Comes The Moon and Love Comes To Everyone are especially poignant, but the entire album is magical and filled with romance. A sense of wistfulness and contentment permeates the album, and it is unabashedly sentimental and beautiful. There's also a tropical element in some of the songs and a refreshing sense of gentleness, lightness of spirit and warmth in the vocals, production, lyrics and instrumentation.

Free Music Review: Gorgeous
Hit: 5 Stars

Behind All Things Must Pass, this album is definitely in the fight for number 2 on the all-time George list. Depending on my mood, Cloud Nine and Brainwashed also contend for that spot.

As I am writing this review at work, I will not take the time to break it down song by song, but let this be said; Your Love is Forever is the most beautiful song George wrote after ATMP. The entire album is wonderful, but the amazing thing is, even if it were terrible, it would still be worth it just for that one track. Good thing for us, every single track is top quality.

Faster = Fantastic
