Free Music Notes for In My Life

Free Music Review: Fun, Interesting Arrangements of Timeless Tunes
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a terrific album. Some tracks are better than others, but most are brilliant. The tracks which closely followed the originals did not inspire me. I could take or leave Come Together by McFerrin and Williams, Jeff Beck's A Day in The Life and Jim Carrey doing I Am The Walrus.

I thought Billy Connolly's ringmaster version of Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite was exactly what John had in mind. I think he would have loved it.

Goldie Hawn's torch song version of A Hard Day's Night is great: it gets me every time. It's great when you can have a laugh, including laughing at yourself.

The instrumental arrangements of Because featuring Vanessa Mae [who left her wet T shirt at home] and John Williams' version of Here Comes the Sun are superb.

I have always loved the instrumental tracks featured on Yellow Submarine. I loved hearing Martin perform his Pepperland Suite live in Sydney about the time this CD was released, and love having a memento of the occasion with this recording. Pepperland has always been one of my favourite tunes.

The finale 2 tracks make a fitting end to the album. Sean Connery recites In My Life sensitively. The text makes even more sense as he recites it, than it does as a song, though The Beatles version of their own song remains one of my favourite of many favourite Beatles' songs.

Many people hate this album with a passion, but I think it contains some of the very best versions of Beatles songs that have so far been attempted.

Other terrific arrangements of Beatles albums include the King's Singers Beatles Connection and Goran Sollscher's outstanding classical guitar CD, Here, There and Everywhere.

Free Music Review: Martin "Magic"
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of the Beatles since 1962, and I have always considered George Martin a member of the band. "In My Life" is a magical trip into the essence of what makes the Beatles music timeless; "Quality Entertainment". George Martin has taken a group of unlikely entertainers and put together an absolutely enchanting disc. Backed by an incredible back up band, Robin Williams & Bobby Mcferrin launch in to an amazing reading of "Come Together. Goldie Hawn is luscious on the club version of "A Hard Days Night". Jeff Beck's version of "A Day in the Life" is filled with passion, as is "Because" by Venessa Mae. "Being for the Benifit of Mr. Kite" is done with Billy Connolly as the ringmaster in the circus with great results. Jim Carrey shows off some amazing skills as a vocalist on a wonderfull rendition of "I Am the Walrus", and Phil Collins proves once again that his talents are vast indeed on his performance of "Golden Slumbers, Carry that Weight, and The End". Some reviews I've read have really trashed this disc, but I think they missed the mark. "In My Life" is a loving testimony to the talent of George Martin, and the dexterity of the songs that he was such an influence so many years ago. If anyone has the right to do covers of Beatles songs; It's George Martin. The undisputed master. Thanks George, for such an entertaining and magical disc.

Free Music Review: Interesting re-take by interesting people.
Hit: 5 Stars

Look, there are plenty of whiners who dislike this disk, but maybe they just awoke on the wrong side of the bed, or had a nettle in their saddle, or, worst case scenario, they aren't "getting any."

For those, I say,"get some, lay back and have a sip of the red, have a smoke, then listen to it."

There is no one trying to rip you off here folks, it's not the Beatles, but it is tastefully and tactfully done. I think it's fair to say that it is respectfully done with talented people, by a talented producer with light aire in mind.

So what was Sir George supposed to do after the Beatles, sit back and do nothing? I guess maybe Beethoven should have sat on his ass after 4 pieces or so, so's not to damage the first efforts?

This just sounds like a group of friends having some fun really. I could picture Ringo, George, John, and Paul sitting around with everyone on this cd, joints or not, just having fun doing some great music a bit more justice. Don't worry, they aren't taking the show on tour or anything.
Relax folks, relax.

Free Music Review: Like Gorgeous Looking Petits Fours
Hit: 5 Stars

No offence, but, with my parsonal experience in a boutique in Tokyo for three years where the BGM was strictly fixed to the Beatles, I had been, to be honest, tired of the music.
Then, about ten years ago, I came across this great film called "For the Boys" in which my favourite diva Bette Midler sings "In My Life". I found bette's version of the song so mouth-wateringly tasty and came to love the music once again.
And, as a big fan of Sean Connery, I was immensely excited by this George Martin's final production, "In My Life". I had never heard Sean Connery sings before. Well, in that sense, the outcome of this album was not what I expected, but certainly not dissatisfaction. Far from it!
Robin Williams' cool "Come Together", Goldie Hawn's jazzy "A Hard Day's Night", Jim Carrey's powerful "I Am The Walrus"... All is but like delicious petits fours that I cannot decide which one is my favourite. This is The Great Buy.

Free Music Review: CD with Personality
Hit: 5 Stars

Am expressing opinion to this CD after reading some of the comments of others listed. The artist who recorded this CD is George Martin (Peter Seller's movie Hard Day Night). This CD is a creative combination of artists from various disciplines...and a personal statement of the man's love for the songs and the artists featured. Many of the titles are being performed by people who are NOT Streisand nor Sinatra. They care about the songs and their place in history as well as having deep respect for the CD's producer. It is a collection of well known titles and should be enjoyed for just that. If you buy the CD, know what you are buying and smile as you listen to Robin Williams or Goldie Hawn. It's too bad that other "raters" on this site approached their reviews without knowing the purpose. For what this rating is worth...ENJOY!
