Free Music Notes for Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George MichaelFree Music Review: Not Quite Right Hit: 3 StarsIt's a good set, worth more than I paid for it on Amazon, but I was very disappointed with the version of "I Want Your Sex" they used for this album. This is not the version we heard on the charts, and I can't imagine why they did this. It's a trumped-up yet watered-down variation with none of the punch or magnetism of the original. Bad move.
Free Music Review: Few can match him Hit: 5 StarsIf you're looking for WHAM! forget it, although there is a WHAM BEST OF available seperately. This is all about George Michaels SOLO material, as my header states few can match him-vocally-lyrically he's in a class of his own and this CD will demonstrate that, leaving you in no doubt of the mans ability.
If you are a fan of music at all you will find it hard to dislike this CD. Great ballads, sung with oodles of clarity and class, Jesus To A Child must have had the Sony Exec's pulling their hair out in jealousy, superb. It covers all the bases from his early solo releases like Careless Whisper and A Different Corner to his late 90's stuff like Fastlove and Outside. All in all probably the best collection by one of, if not "THE" best singers ever to grace the charts.
Free Music Review: Prolific collection of good songs. Hit: 5 StarsThe first CD is amazing. The second is almost useless. The best songs ot the second CD are the 3 last.
Free Music Review: You gotta have "faith" in George! Hit: 5 StarsGeorge Michael has class, money, and talent by the truckload. This hits album is unforgettable. If you want to earn my respect, you have to get this.
Free Music Review: The best from one of the best Hit: 5 StarsI love George Michael, what a beautiful yet tragically underrated voice. It really bothers me how many people seem to dismiss our George, for any variety of small-minded reasons, because he is such a wonderful singer and entertainer. I guess that we here in America can forgive our entertainers for having absolutely no talent (think Britney Spears, the Simpson sisters, many rap artists, etc), but we apparently can't forgive them for having private lives which should not be any of our concern. Too bad, many are the talented who go relatively unnoticed by the bourgeois masses. I guess that in this day and age it is something to be proud of, really.
Anyway, I have had this 2-disc collection since it came out in 1998 and have listened to it constantly ever since. It is broken into two separate moods; the downtempo ballad-heavy first disk titled "for the heart", and the beat driven dance-y second disk titled "for the feet". Both are absolute winners. The first, as could be expected, will take you in and pull firmly on the heartstrings. The second will scrape you off the couch and onto the dancefloor.
All of the songs on both disks are old, favorite friends of any self-respecting George Michael fan, and all are absolutely amazing, but some of my personal favorites include the following:
For the Heart: Father Figure, Careless Wisper, Kissing a Fool, I Can't Make You Love Me (almost puts Bonnie Raitt to shame), Heal the Pain, and Praying for Time
For the Feet: Outside, Fastlove, Freedom 90, Star People 97, Killer/Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Spinning the Wheel, I Knew You Were Waiting for Me, Somebody to Love
If you are considering this purchase, don't hesitate, especially at this price. Also be sure to check out the DVD of the same name for the videos of all of these songs - a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. I love the Fastlove video - so vivid, sexy and decadent. Also be certain to pick up a copy of his most recent album, "Patience", another can't-be-missed from George and, if it is to be believed, the last.
I really hope that George doesn't hang it up, it would be such an incredible loss to his current, and potentially future, fans.
