Free Music Notes for Older
Free Music Review: a captivating mood piece--splendidly melodic as well

Regardless of how corny you might find some of George Michael's Wham! work to be, it's totally obvious even on the first Wham! album that he had an incredible knack for catchy/ tuneful pop-rock songwriting. George had released some music in the time between 1990's "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" and this album, "Older", which was finally released in 1996--he contributed 3 tracks to the various artists "Red Hot + Dance" CD, plus there was the release of the "Five Live" EP which found him teaming up with the surviving members of Queen--however, this period is notorious for Michael's lawsuit with his record company, Sony/ Columbia, which he ultimately lost. To put it a certain way though, "Older" certainly was worth the wait because Michael really outdid himself here--this is a truly superb album. Overall, the album is very, very mellow and frequently haunting/ contemplative; don't get the wrong idea though thinking that mellow is synonymous with boring--with so much great melodicism, elegance, and tastefulness, plus with George being in absolutely terrific, expressive form vocally, the album ends up being captivating, piling up great track upon great track. Beyond that, "Older" is a deeply resonating album, very emotionally moving. A bunch of the tracks find George picking up where the song "Cowboys and Angels" left off--"Jesus To A Child" & "You Have Been Loved" are lush, reverb-heavy ballads that are both beautifully sad and incredibly soothing; and the yearning "To Be Forgiven" is really good also. "Fastlove" is an infectious dancefloor tune while at the same time capturing a feel of romantic desperation to chilling effect--you've got to admit though that George was rather crazy to think he could get away with lifting the main hook from Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots" whole cloth without giving credit and get away with it (the song's break is also blatantly reminiscent of the one in "Forget Me Nots")--nevertheless, a brilliant song. "Spinning the Wheel" is a superbly soulful tune with a great swinging, jazzy feel and excellent falsetto vocals from George. The super mellow, starkly arranged and reflective "It Doesn't Really Matter" is another soothing gem (notice his near quoting of "Always Something There To Remind Me"). George also proves he can totally pull off a lounge jazz-style tune with the ultra-catchy "Move On" which finds a unique balance between being downbeat and uplifting. "The Strangest Thing" is a strong tune with a cool otherworldly/ atmospheric feel to it, and the ranting "Star People" is fun. You've really got to hand it to George Michael for what he accomplished on this album--he really managed to capture an essence here, one that reminds of me of what makes so much R&B and soft rock from the 1970s and early '80s so great, and certainly there are musical influences from much earlier as well, and it's an extremely winning blend. The fact that George convincingly pulls off the one-man-band approach--he plays all of the instruments on several tracks--just further demonstrates what an extremely talented artist he is. "Older" is an essential album--it's one of the best albums of the '90s.

UK reissue of this 1996 album from the enormously talented Pop singer/songwriter. Sony.After a two-year legal battle in which the pop star accused his former label of treating him like, well, a pop star while he demanded to be considered an artist, any designation short of masterpiece would qualify Older as disappointment. Since securing his release from Sony and hooking up with DreamWorks SKG (run by folks named Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen who could sympathize with Michael's two-ton ego) the question has been: Now that Michael got what he wanted, can he deliver that masterpiece? Older's answer: Of course not.
In fairness, however, the 32-year-old semireformed teen idol's return comes close enough to greatness to suggest he deserves to be cut a little slack. Where he overestimates his talent, perhaps we've underestimated it. Older has not forsaken the supermodel worldview of Michael's post-Wham! successes Faith and Listen Without Prejudice. Style is still a big part of his substance, and the word 'baby' is still used too much in his lyrics. But Older is, as implied, a more mature set. Paying homage to Brazilian bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and his own Greek heritage, Michael stews his Brit/American R&B with Latin jazz pop and Mediterranean swirls. He even casts himself as a '90s Sinatra on a lounge-friendly track where he plays all instruments. And with all of Older's high-stakes ambition, Michael manages to keep the album immersed in a superbly melodic pop glaze that might have turned most of these tracks into hits. --Roni Sarig
