Free Music Review: IF YOU'RE A GM FAN YOU'LL LOVE IT!

If you're a fan of GM, you'll love this CD. GM's fans are a very loyal lot (GM has said so himself). We have to be. Unlike most music stars who churn out CD's like they are churning out butter, GM values quality over quantity. He has publicly criticized artists like Prince, who think anything they write is worthy of distribution. Frankly, I don't know how GM has the Patience (no pun intended) to do what he does. With his celebrity and name, he could churn out a new CD every year. But this is only his 4th album since going solo with Faith in 1987! There are a couple of Best Hits CD's, a CD with songs from the last century, tons of mixes, etc., but only 4 solo CD's (including Faith). Unlike some artists, who put out so many CD's you'd need a bank loan to collect them all, GM puts out only quality. His music since Faith has become more real, and thus more somber. Non-fans don't like that. They want the "image" back. They want the stud, singing to all the ladies, in jeans, boots and a denim jacket. He wasn't that guy. Period. It was an image. One he would immediately dislike. After Faith, his music matured. Today, his music is full of honestly and soul. Even his music before going solo was beautiful. But then, I think the beauty was his God-given voice. Wham was about fun, being silly and enjoying life. GM is a much more serious and introspective person. You saw hints of that in the Wham days, with ballads like "A Different Corner". His music since Faith reflects that also. Can't wait for the 5th album. Hope it comes sooner versus later!

It must be hard being a George Michael fan. Patience is only his fourth studio effort in the 18 years since Wham! split, so its release must be some cause for celebration. There always seems to have been something preventing him from releasing a new album--from arrests for lewd behavior, protracted battles with record companies, or prolonged periods of grieving for departed family and friends. Thankfully, Patience is pretty good.Flitting between fraught ballads and up-tempo adult pop (the misguided sample-laden single "Freeek!" being the unnecessary exception), George here returns to the structure and mood of 1990s Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1. Patience is at its most delicate and moving with its title track, the intense, tabloid-attacking "Through" and the painful family memories of "My Mother Had a Brother." To balance this, hearts will be raised by "Amazing," with its echoes of the Bee Gees, "Round Here," in which George remembers his early days scampering around Bushey with Andrew Ridgley, and "Cars and Trains," which celebrates the kind of lifestyle that so riled the LAPD back in 1998. That's the thing about George Michael these days. Love him or loathe him, he is unapologetically himself. And fans should be very grateful for that. --Dominic Wills
