Free Music Notes for Patience Album

Free Music Review: Older Still.
Hit: 4 Stars

Apparently this is George Michael's final album. It's safe to say that he will not achieve the success of "Faith" or "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" again. "Patience", his fourth solo album, is slightly better than "Older". Michael continues to display his growth as a songwriter on such personal tracks as "Round Here", "My Mother Had A Brother" and "Through" while maintaining the raunchy numbers like "Freeek '04" and "Shoot The Dog"--which is on the import version only, which is what I have. George covers his favorite topics such as sex, love, politics, homosexuality and family. I found "My Mother Had A Brother" particularly gripping in that it seems as if George had an uncle who committed suicide back in 1963 because he was gay and was afraid to come out of the closet. It has to be one of Michael's more poignant songs and certainly one of his best written. There are a few songs about the loss of his partner, Anselmo, in "American Angel" and "Please Send Me Someone" both addressing George's depression over the death of his partner and the happiness of finding a new love. "Round Here" is a nice biography of how George came to prominence from his humble beginnings. He ends "Patience" with the song "Through" which apparently addresses his desire to leave the music business. Overall, this album falls between "Listen Without Prejudice" and "Older" in quality and feel. It has a good variety of subject matter and is well paced. There are equal amounts of upbeat and downbeat tracks with "Amazing" and "Please Send Me Someone" easily being Top 40 hits with "Shoot The Dog", "Precious Box", "Flawless (Go To The City) and "Freek" being club favorites. The best ballads are "My Mother Had A Brother", "Round Here" and "Through". Not a bad ending to a career (if it is, in fact, THE END).
