Free Music Review: Bad To The Marrow Of His Bones
Hit: 5 Stars

I'd like to write two reviews on this album. One to the old George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers, and one to the music lovers out there who don't know who these guys are. There are some, you know, because of radio.

To the old George and The Destroyers fans, man if you haven't picked this up, dig in that pocket a little and do yourself one of the biggest musical favors you'll ever do for yourself. This album is absolutely the deal! If you gave up a little on George with a few of his last albums, forget it. This album may be George and his band at his and their zenith. I don't have to tell you guys about George at his best, and I'm not going to waste your time giving you my personal review of each and every cut. Because, in their own way, they are all great! Not a one that you are going to fall asleep on. Man, just go out and get it. You won't be sorry.

Now, to the music lovers who don't know who George Thorogood and The Destroyers are, here goes. I have my favorites in different genres of music. To me, the best Rock and Roll Band of all time is simply Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. My favorite Country singer of all time is Merle Haggard. The reason I bring these guys up is because on todays radio, you're not going to hear them. Just like George Thorogood. When's the last time you've heard a George Thorogood song on the radio? You know why? He's too good! With George Thorogood and The Destroyers you are not going to hear the washed out stuff they play on the radio that all sounds the same. Whether it's country or rock. And, you're not going to hear rap where you can't understand any of the words, and if you did, you wish you hadn't. George is a blend of alot of things. Rock and Roll, blues, blues-rock, rock-blues, sometimes a little country twang mixed in, and sometimes George will sing, for George, a tender ballad. One thing I can tell you, you're not going to sit still for long. You are going to move something, up and down, or sideways. And, guess what, even though George sings the types of music that I told you he sings, here's the big surprise. You will understand nearly every word George sings! That's right. The guy has a great voice. Oh, one last thing about George that I must throw on you. George Thorogood is probably one of the top 7 or 8 guitar players that I've ever heard in my lifetime. I mean, he really plays. He doesn't just make noise. No sir. If you don't believe me, go out and see him. And, not to forget the Band, two of the guys have been with George for over 30 years. Why do you think that might be? Because they don't want to play with anyone else.

One final thing to the new people. If you give this album a chance, whether you like it or not, I guarantee you one thing. You will say, "I've never heard anything quite like that before!!" Thanks for listening to me ramble on, and I truly hope you buy this and enjoy this album as much as I have. That goes for the old fans, and hopefully, the new ones. Thanks, George! You're the best at what you do, man!

Hard Stuff Poster

George Thorogood is the quintessential American blues-rock guitarist. In a career that spans more than three decades, he has led his band The Destroyers to the very pinnacle of the blues pyramid spawning such classic tracks as "Bad To The Bone", "I Drink Alone", "Get A Haircut" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" among others. This new album sees him honing his talent even further on new self-penned tracks such as "The Hard Stuff" and "Any Town USA", and a selection of classic covers such as John Lee Hooker's "Huckle Up Baby" and Fats Domino's "Hello Josephine", all given the unmistakeable Thorogood treatment.
Brushing off criticisms that his albums all sound the same as casually as he peels off Chuck Berry licks from his trusty Gibson, George Thorogood keeps the faith on The Hard Stuff. Coproducer Jim Gaines (Jimmy Thackery, Santana, Luther Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan), who knows his way around a bluesy riff, returns to add his touch. The combination of rugged production with a relatively varied set makes this a keeper in the bulging Thorogood catalog. The guitarist and his band churn through a rollicking set with as much enthusiasm and fire as someone with half his 56 years. The Stonesy attack of "Rock Party" is mixed with high-voltage shuffles ("Takin' Care of Business" [not the BTO tune]), swinging, upbeat instrumentals ("Cool It!"), and the usual assortment of unexpected covers from the likes of Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, and Fats Domino. Thorogood maintains a refreshing sense of self-deprecation on the boogielicious "I Didn't Know," where he repeats variations on the title with a wink and a smile. A surprisingly subtle acoustic cover of Bob Dylan's "Drifter's Escape" proves he isn't afraid to take it down a notch, and a sizzling, rootsy take on Johnny Shines's "Dynaflow Blues" shows his proficiency on National Steel slide guitar.

At almost an hour, the album is on the long side, but the playing is consistently inspired and Thorogood never sounds like he's going through the motions--no small feat at this stage of his thirty-plus-year career. With enough diversity to keep it interesting, The Hard Stuff proves the typically dependable Thorogood still has plenty of gas left in the tank to keep his cylinders firing. --Hal Horowitz
