Free Music Review: FROM PIECES OF A MAN TO PIECES OF A LEGEND....
Hit: 3 Stars

I have mixed opinions on this one. Its not that this live CD isnt good... its pretty bumpin, but I got it in Japan the same time I got another one of Gils CDs. (Does anybody remember the name of the live one from the mid 70s... I think the cover was red white and blue... it had the full version of THE BOTTLE with that long and delightful deep and funky percussion break ? - - Was it FIRST MINUTE OF A NEW DAY ?) - - Anyway, I think compared to BLACK WAX (VHS) and that other (out of print?) album I just mentioned, I cant see what makes this one stand out. The studio versions are much tighter... on the other hand I do recall listening to BLUE COLAR quite a few times. - - Am I saying pass this one up ? Well, not exactly. This was the AMNESIA EXPRESS sound typical of his late 80s - early/mid 90s - - quite crisp and funky. I would put it like this... all the songs on this recording are excellent and good versions... if you havent heard them, and you cant find the studio versions... go for it... otherwise, get vintage Gil first then dig into this one. - - Incidently, people who enjoy Gils mixture of funky Jazz, third world, and politically conscious music might want to check out FELA RANSOME KUTI - - on the other hand if its the Groove you dig, go for Roy Ayers GREATEST HITS or LONNIE SMITH (not Dr. Lonnie Smith the organist... the keyboardist... especially the album with GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.)
