Free Music Review: Not very broad and even less deep

Gillian Welch (shorthand for Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, her underacknowledged full partner in creativity) has proven a marketable genre artist. Now she's put on a cowboy hat and changed genres mid-stream. Her last LP came out at a time I was revisiting the Farm Security Administration photos of Walker Evans for some writing I was doing. The coincidence of the two made me think about GW's "image" and its role in her "authenticity." Is she "real" or is she a product ofher own commodification? Go back and look at those photos and it's as if she made herself in that image. I wondered if she lived the role or left it in the suit case she took to gigs. After some thinking and talking about Americana music and its place in postmodern cultural production, I went on to other things and even didn't much remember calling her the "PeeWee Herman of folk music." I loved the first CD, found the second
stark but compelling, went through spates of listening to the third, and was interested enough that I bought the new one the day it became available. I can't imagine listening to it after the once-through that it got on the way home,unless it's to prove my point about GW as product. Ten songs, 2 about how great a mother and father she has and one that repeats the same words over and over.Why, the one that bemoans the fact that all the songs have been written and wonders what a singer is to do
when every good word has been used and abused should have been the first cut because it shows the listener what is to come. But then again, image often stands in place of talent. I saw an ad in a recent NY Times that heralded Chevrolet's new retro car. Chrysler had success, why not? At least until consumers get tired.
Some music comes from the gut and some comes from the
rhyming dictionary. And thus we have the issue of
authenticity in Americana music, which, after all, has
a fluid claim to being a genre.
