Free Music Review: A Desert Island Recording

All fans of opera search for the "perfect recording" of this work or that. All too often, we have to settle for "pretty good"--while we wish that a particular group of soloists had recorded it (but never did), or that so-and-so had not been past his/her prime, or that the sound was more modern, or whatever.

Not the case here. The sound is late pre-digital era and is outstanding. The balance between orchestra and singers is perfect. All the soloists are in their primes, with the possible exception of Scotto. Her voice was just starting to wobble slightly in the upper register, but it doesn't bother me at all for Maddalena. She attacks her role with abandon, giving a performance with "warts and all" that is passionate and beautiful. Domingo's dark, ringing young tenor voice pours through one glorious aria after another, and his duets are sensitive. Milnes was still a force in the late 70s, and his biting baritone is second-to-none as Gerard.

This opera is certainly one of my favorites, but the recording is, hands down, my favorite opera recording, a desert island recording, if you will. And my collection includes other greats, like Rigoletto with Pav/Milnes/Sutherland, Boheme with Pav/Freni and Faust with Gedda/de los Angeles.

For a few days back in 1976, a "perfect storm" gathered in a recording studio and lighting was captured, preserving musical magic for all time. What group of singers today could equal, let alone surpass, this Chenier? I can't think of a tenor, soprano and baritone who could--and there are some fairly decent artists around, but not like those in this recording. Not even close.
