Free Music Notes for Gladiator

Free Music Review: Maximas satisfation and releaxation
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing the movie, I did not have any intendtion to buy the soundtrack until I watch the special features on the movie DVD.

In special features DVD, the last selection of the deleted scene had the track 'Now we are free' that led me to by the music CD.

I guess most of the credit goes to the voice of Lisa Gerrard. It's haunting, sad, and relaxing that made me to go out and get the 'More music from Gladitor' CD.

An action movie fan like myself had got sick of Hans Zimmer style of music. I remember clearly back at the cinema, I knew instantly that it was Hans work (credits was not shown till the end). It came from the scene when Maximas felt the danger of his wife & son and rushes home on his horse. The music had the same patten to what Hans had use in 'The Rock' and 'Broken Arrow'.

However, that is the only noticable music, where rest of the other tracs on the CD were as impressive as James Horner work on Braveheart (which I also got).

Hans had previously worked with director Ridley Scott in Black Rain starring Michael Douglas.

Free Music Review: One of the best soundtracks ever
Hit: 5 Stars

I heard this soundtrack before I saw the film as it had been recommended to me many times. I have never (with the possible exception of John Williams Schindler's List score) heard such emotive, original and evocative music. I've always loved good film music because of the aforementioned qualities and this is no exception. From the eerie 'Progeny' that leads through to 'Battle', Zimmer manages to convey every angle of the musical kalaedoscope. His use of the duduk in particular left me with goosebumps and my current composition is heavily influenced by this sound and 'Earth'. By using a full orchestra, with heavy and extensive percussion, the music is powerful in every track without exception. Lisa Gerrard's haunting and soulful vocals are more of an instrument than a vocal performance and add an extra dimension that most soundtracks don't have. If you're wondering whether to buy this, listen to the 'Earth', 'Progeny,' 'The Wheat', 'Battle' and 'Honour Him' track samples to get an idea of every aspect of this CD. You won't eb disappointed.

Free Music Review: Amazing recording!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been listening to this sound track for 11 years now and recently got a new high quality CD player and good speakers. The recording captures the full range of sound, from the subtlest, wispy sounds of pipes and flutes, to the fiery brass and thunderous bass and drums. I am left almost breathless by the sonic beauty revealed: lush vocals and beautiful melodies of Lisa Gerrard; the spectacular dynamics, soundstage, and imaging of the recording; and the textures of varied instruments like the duduk, guitars, various percussion instruments, perhaps Tibetan bowls also. The theme of the 3rd track, The Battle, really gets your blood boiling! Holst and Wagner are quoted almost verbatim in places, enriching the score by the connotations associated with Mars and The Ring.

Listen to the CD on a a high quality stereo to hear all the details and feel the full emotional impact. A lot of the beauty is lost on an average CD player with average speakers. Otherwise your CD might rest dusty on the rack, its depths unplumbed.

Free Music Review: It's fun music, but it's also thinking music
Hit: 5 Stars

After I watched "Gladiator", I immediately hopped to the CD store next door to buy the soundtrack, and I'm not kidding. I bought it RIGHT after the movie. Very few movie soundtracks do this to me. The most recent one before "Gladiator" was, interestingly, "The Thin Red Line", which was also scored by Hans Zimmer (a most capable composer who is finally beginning to have his talent noticed and recognized). As film music, it adds much of the atmosphere and mood, the urgency and taut tension, without stealing it from the scene itself. As a soundtrack, it is more than just marvellous. Whether it twists your heart with rending pathos (many by Lisa Gerrard, another most capable musical artist), or it pumps up your adrenaline for "The Battle" (track #3), it never stops in giving subtleties and nuances. This is fun music, but it's also thinking music, and that is very, very rare. "Gladiator" 's soundtrack is most highly recommended, guaranteed one of the best of the year.

Free Music Review: As haunting and meaningful as the movie
Hit: 5 Stars

FEW MOVIES have penetrated my soul like Gladiator. In fact, I have never seen a movie on the big screen more than once until this one; to date, I have seen it four times. I will see it once more. Each viewing is better and more meaningful than the last.

This CD, the first soundtrack I have ever felt compelled to purchase, is as haunting, meaningful, and masterful as the movie it supports. Its haunting rich eastern melodies, lush understated vocals, and studied ambiguity conjure up images of the meaning of Gladiator--the human struggle for dignity, virtue, honor, and revenge, while hanging from one's heart like a lead weight. If you have a family, a sense of generational history, and an imagination, you will love the movie's soundtrack as much as the movie itself.

Some viewers/listeners simply are not able or do not have the ability to appreciate the depth of characterization, the sweeping life metaphors, and ultimate transcendant (and uplifting) message in a movie like Gladiator.
