Free Music Notes for Gladiator

Free Music Review: Majestic and beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

A film of such enormity and power needed a musical score to rival that of Morricone's great works. It is very hard to say whether the film would be as good with a lesser score, but even without the film, the soundtrack is a superb piece of standalone music. Ridley Scott uses his visual tricks and palette to create films that are beautifully aesthetic. Zimmer parallels Scott in the musical domain with sonic images and sketches. Like Scott you witness vignettes that are different in style to the backdrop of the music (the way that Holst is mixed with North African themes is similar to the way that Scott mixed 1930s retro with science fiction in Bladerunner). Such oddities make the music that much more interesting and provide both style and substance. The closing tracks co-penned by Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance fame) are the type that send shivers down your spine for their simple beauty and I will often just play these - I am only disappointed that they are so brief. Needless to say that I enjoyed the film but I am not often moved to buy the soundtrack, but this time I had the soundtrack within days of seeing this great film. An epic film of a genre we rarely see these days and a score that more than does it credit. Well done Mr Scott, Mr Zimmer et al.

Free Music Review: Who is going to like the 'Gladiator Soundtrack' ?
Hit: 5 Stars

There are some soundtracks you like and some you don't. The problem is that when music is written for film purposes, it is sometimes deprived of all listening value. Take, for example, the soundtrack to Jurassic Park:Lost World, which consisted almost entirely of high, sharp tones that pained your ears, but perhaps underscored the thrilling movie scenes well. Ditto for Air Force One.

However, with such examples as Zimmer's The Rock or Crimson Tide, we hear soundtracks that are not only beautiful, but also inspiring and grand, prompting you to go back and see the movies again. Who did not become instantly awed by the power of The Rock's main theme?

This is the case with Gladiator. You have absolutely nothing to fear if you doubt that this will be worth listening to over and over again. You will find several such inspiring themes, suited for battle, shaped for war. It mixes the really grandiose, heroic themes with energy remniscent of John Debney's 'Carriage Chase' in Cutthroat Island or Poledouris' Conan. It also contains quite the contrast, the emotional, melancholic tracks like 'Cora' in Last of the Mohicans, relying heavily on a mystic, otherworldly vocal by Garrard.

Therefore, you are going to like The Gladiator Soundtrack.

Free Music Review: Spiritual, Exotic, Powerful, just like the Movie Gladiator.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have always had a love for Classical Music. The sounds of Violens, Flutes, and other instruments are soothing to my soul and spirit. The Gladiator Soundtrack combines my love of classical music and my other loves..North African and Spanish Music. Each and every time I listen to the music on this soundtrack, It is like looking at the entire movie again. I can visualize the entire cast and every scene, while I listen to this music. I especially think about Maximus as the Warrior and his constant love for his wife and son. I also think about the only 2 people who stayed Loyal and True to Maximus as Friends: Juba who ( Played by Djimon Hounsou of the movie Amistad. ) was the Slave turned Gladiator, and Cicero ( Maximus's Man Servant when he was a General.). Those are the characters that I truely think about, while listening to this soundtrack, along with thinking about the beautiful scenery of North Africa and the mountains and countryside of Spain. Gladiator is a real good soundtrack, if you want to hear classical music with an Exotic Flavor mixed into it..that will lead you into feeling all kinds of emotions, while you free your entire mind and just listen to the different instruments.

Free Music Review: Gladiator Soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

Having just come from a review that was practically trashing this soundtrack, I feel a need to write my own. It seems a better idea than flying into a homicidal rage and killing something. See, that's what happens to me when people tell me my favourite CD bites. My opinion? The soundtrack is in a *jewel* case for a reason. It's simply a gem of movie music. My personal favourite tracks are #3 (The Battle), which starts with one of a thrilling sequence and gets better from there, causing my blood pressure to skyrocket rather dangerously. Another favourite is #7 (Barbarian Horde). If I thought my blood pressure was dangerously high before, that was nothing. This track is my all-time favourite piece of music on the face of the planet. It sends little thrills chasing up and down my spine, and I close my eyes and just let the music do it's thing. Who needs skydiving and bungee jumping when you have the Gladiator soundtrack? And the last three tracks (Elysium, Honour Him and Now we are Free) are beautiful, sad, ethereal and absoloutely touching. Lisa Gerrard definitely adds a touch for the better in this soundtrack, softening it with these beautiful pieces. Watch the movie, folks. Buy the soundtrack. I don't think you'll regret it.

Free Music Review: Different Sides of Heroism
Hit: 5 Stars

What a beautiful score to accompany the breathtaking Gladiator! Even as I was watching the movie, I found my ears straying away w/ the music luring my senses to a realm of heroes with different faces. Zimmer truly recreates the grandeur of Lion King with powerful orchestration that more than captures the essence of war, the harshness of life, and the vigor of blood. The scale of the movie was tremendous, and Maximus's every move is matched by the skillful score that dashes behind him as a stealth shadow. Yet more than once, this faceless shadow emerges to dominate--to grapple and dazzle the audience who feel themselves slipping into the mist of Rome. Lisa Garraud's contribution is also extraordinary. Human voice employed as "instrument" draines the movie with passion as Maximus is ailed but ultimately ameliorated by humaness: fragile yet resilient, and the tangling sensitives that tie him to us. The beautiful vocalization complements the martial orchestration to fulfill Maximus's heroic stance, that's elevated yet still overlooks humanity, like the music itself. The score looms over the plot, surrounds the screen, and plucks the emotional cord that echoes the name of Gladiator.
