Free Music Review: We don't hear enough of Glazunov!

Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865-1936) was a spectacular composer and, perhaps more importantly, head of the St. Petersbug Conservatory during Russia's most difficult and turbulent period, especially for artists.
Glazunov ultimately wrote nine symphonies and his Symphony No. 6 is arguably his very best. I certainly love it. It fringes on a fantasy, harboring a very noble and comprehensible approach to and paradigm of classical music in its most wonderful melodic period. I think we often get overwhelmed with the Mega-composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, etc., and brilliant composers such as Glazunov thus get shoved aside in their wake. But this is a performance which any classical music fan would much enjoy hearing.
Symphony No. 6, in this rendering, is 38:05 in length... very nice.
"The Forest" (op. 19), is a dynamic, one-movement fantasy intermittently parsed with some very fun whimsical elements. It's length here is 21:02.
As classical music fantasies go, this is one of the best, although it fell under some early technical criticism by a few of Glazunov's peers, such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Balakirev. But for today's listener, we get the joy of being able to "feel" the infinite number of intricasies of a dark Russian forest. When I hear it, I always think of the roller-coaster wolf hunt segment of Tolstoy's "War and Peace," including the subsequent and very personal evening for Count Nicolai, Petya, and Natasha at "Uncle's" home during the evening subsequent to the hunt.
Both pieces are played by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Anissimov conducting, and their rendering is just spectacular. Naxos captured this DDD recording with equal perfection. The music was recorded at the Mosfilm Studio in Moscow in 1996 and 1997. The rather dark cover art is "The Mating of the Capercaillies," by Bruno Liljefors (1860-1939). The liner notes by Keith Anderson are quite comprehensive and informative.
This CD is a joy to the ears. Highly recommended!
