Glen Phillips has released his second studio "solo" album and it is luminious. The songs have a shining quality to them, you don't just hear them, you can see them. Phillips' first work, since leaving Toad the Wet Sprocket (won't every review still mention that?, Abulum, was an understated collection of almost short stories that was deeply appreciated by his fans. Now, Phillips has - it seems - more backing and has produced an even stronger set of songs than appeared on Abulum (stronger means that the prior work was also strong) with more fully fleshed out arrangements.
Lyrically, Phillips has always been concise and often poignant. He's at his best here. The first song, Duck and Cover, is an upside down look at the reality of life's ups and downs. He plays with a chorus and a refrain system that keeps expanding, the refrain system in the middle of the song sounds out like an ancient spiritual text (blessed are meek...). Less narrative in structure than the songs on Abulum, they take on a sparkling quality because the listener can project (for better or worse) their own circumstances into the songs. This mirror quality to the lyrics is what makes the work luminious.
Many of these songs fans know because Phillips has shared them on his website or folks have heard them in concert. When he sings them solo they have a kind of, not in your face, more of an in your heart and brain quality to them. These studio versions trade the up front flavor of the compositions for more full arrangements; such trade off usually works (again, meant as a reinforcement of the way Phillips can carry a song by himself).
Certainly, this collection is the best singer-songwriter release of the year. It is cohesive, melodic, interesting work; performed with excellence. Three of the songs are written with Dan Wilson (from Semisonic) who seems to be a fine songwriting partner for many including Carole King (see All About Chemistry's One True Love). From the exuberant "Thankful" to the intense "Easier" (fans, don't lament the loss of theee word, just listen to the demo version), to a song that is the best model for popular song writing today, "Courage" (great line -"I'm tired of being afraid of what I can't change," this album is the best of its genre in several a year. It shines.
