Free Music Notes for Symphony #6 Devil Choirs At The Gates Of HeavenFree Music Review: purgatory for Whom?
the trouble with this music is that, what space, (conceptual creative) does it inhabit? its hard for post-modernity ruined space for us,space for cultural products reinvents itself so fast now, that we are forgotten before we are remembered;the music of the "scene", what Kronos plays,or "Bang on a Can" it is more about where we are in culture, time does that, you can read Fred Jameson;we are in a after-modernity so Branca is more about place than listening, we want to compare it, where did it come from? listening is not about the here and now, turn it on and then what?the length is impressive, to sustain interest for this time is incredible, and he doesn't, who else does it, Morty Feldman tried without a Cash Box in mind,he never got dupped by Andy Warhol, where the market was everything;he didn't care what sold, but we cannot say that for the likes of Phil Glass or John Zorn,Mr.Turnage,or Michael Torke, all those who depend heavily on the popular gesture, just read WIRE magazine; the cultural buzz of the here n'now, the full(or half)-tilt magnetisms to the Cash Box, whatever you want to call it,and tis a shame because Branca is one of the better ones, a good/better creators, (we do not say "composer" anymore I don't think), Branca is better for his committment to the genre at least of the "symphony", he arduously works at what he does, thinks about it; where others simply try whatever works,"copy-cat" art is important for the current scene that's the market at work;whatever creates the "buzz" that some opera corporate board or orchestral association can raise money for, we need to be deep capitalist pragmatists; well it had worked going back to Adam Smith;so why not now?, , for the system has a habit of turning against you,the system doesn't like you if you cannot feed the Cash Box; so I as a pure unadulterated listener/afficianado would rather listen, (who plucks down my hard earned bucks), if I want to hear a good exciting guitar timbre,I would rather listen to Eric Clapton, or "Doubleback" of ZZ Top, or AC/DC,you put the two alongside each other,(with Branca) or Phil Glass;hands down AC/DC has my $$Green$$/ poor Branca here; and there is no such equivalence of sound to those in Rock by anyone's terms. And it's "a damn shame" (as Bonnie Parker gently told the farmer just repossessed of his home and life; circa 1929) for with all of Branca's professed affinities for the timbral law of the electronic guitar of the raw unfinished convoluted sound, of what he does with the electric guitar,it's not enough, (his solo expositions, also come no where near it) it still inhabits a purgatory, it is neither serious composition nor good overwhelming playing of the guitar sound/timbre, we cannot call what Branca does Rock n'Roll either,it's not performance art either, so what is it? is a sad question, but the same is true for Phil Glass; it is neither good composition (vigorous and intellectual, you know what I mean compare it, it is music to hear perhaps once, not again so good composition means longevity, nor does this music of the Cash box have affinity with anything else; the system is omnivorous, and the faster those who practice, play, rap, slap, dash, and pull within-inside its walls the better they may become, this sounds almost like an Adorno-trope.No just look at what the market does, what is operative is "tainted love" the tune by The "Human League", "to make things right you need someone to hold tight", Branca and the post-popular avant-garde it seems never have anyone to hug, for they are always looking for the next gig. . . the next Big Thing. . .
