Free Music Notes for Glenn Gould: The Complete Original Jacket Collection - Amazon.com ExclusiveFree Music Review: An Amazing Journey Hit: 5 Stars
Having grown up and studied music for a while in Toronto, one can get overwhelmed with people who claim to have known Gould's mother, father, piano technician, teacher or the man himself. Even more than a quarter of a century after his death, people still try to humanize Gould by finding professionals who feel that they are qualified to give him clinical diagnoses. Though it is understandable that one may feel the necessity to link themselves with this Titan, it becomes evident that no one could have known or understood the mind of Gould.
This survey of Gould's recordings is one of the greatest musical journeys that is out there today. Though he was renowned for his interpretations of J.S. Bach and Schoenberg, it becomes evident that he had a vast, vast repertoire that spanned from the early music of Gibbons to his contemporaries. He also discovered and took interest in music that is rarely heard. Gould's Stauss disc and his recordings Grieg and Bizet are also of interest. In this journey, I was amazed at his Beethoven interpretations. I have never heard such humour in his music. His Bach remains unchallenged to this day. There simply isn't a bolder recording of the Toccata in c minor and the "a minor Fugue," from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier.
The discs where he discusses his insights on various matters relating to music (pianos, touring, and critics) gives us another fascinating glimpse of this artist.
This box set is definitely one of those things I would take to a desert island.
Free Music Review: a bargain at any price Hit: 5 Stars
This is a treasure trove. Impeccably presented, beautifully mastered, these are some of the most important performances on disc. There are the controversial performances (Mozart sonatas, late Beethoven), the triumphs (both Goldberg's, Bach pieces too numerous to mention, Beethoven 1 with Bernstein, etc. etc.), and the unexpected--who knew Gould's Brahms would be so stunning to hear?
Others have mentioned problems with disk 37. My copy had no issues, which is good since Gould's "Erioca Variations" are worth the price of the entire set.
If you are fascinated with Gould as I am, this is what you are looking for--it's a shame it's sold out at Amazon, but there are some still available from other sellers at sometimes insanely inflated prices. But keep looking. It's worth it. If you are new to Gould and want to know what all the fuss is about, perhaps you should do some sampling of individual discs before you make a committment. He's an acquired taste, but an artist unlike any other, and if you are serious about great pianism, he's always worth examining. Even his outlandish recordings have a level of polish and artistry that outshine many of the competing versions. If you ever wondered what temperament sounds like, look no further!
Free Music Review: YOU EITHER GET HIM, OR YOU DON't. ME? I...... Hit: 5 Stars
.....get him. Big time.
Yet I don't know how to describe it. Maybe that's the provence of the music in this set.
Yes, the nut was a genius - and it's difficult to under estimate how ill a man Gould was. I'll leave that for the biographers. OCD to the max.
Nonetheless - listen. God - just listen. Not only to the Bach but Disc #11, the Brahms Intermezzi, or Disc #53 the HIndemith Brass Sonatas. Have your musical world enriched and enlarged. Feast deep.
This is a pool to swim in. Whether to dip your toes in, or to swim multiple laps. Gould's music has changed the way I listen to music for over four decades. I continue to hear things I've never heard before. (This is particularly true in these latest re-masterings)
I waited a year to buy this set. My advice: don't wait. If you love Gould, you'll love this set. If like me, you already own several of the 20-bit "white box" remasterings - buy this set. Having the visual images of the album covers makes each one more distinct.
Then listen to the first recording of the Goldbergs, and the valedictory recording of the Goldbergs and ponder the meaning, and scope, of Life.
Free Music Review: The crown jewel of my CD collection!! Hit: 5 Stars
This set is back in stock at Amazon (who knows for how long) after a few weeks of being on backorder. Mine just arrived last week and I can assure everyone here that the box sets in Amazon's stock now contains a perfect copy of disc #37 ("Beethoven Variations"). The bottom of this "new" box still says, "Made in the EU." I say "new" because upon opening Amazon's shipping carton, I noted that the cellophane wrapper was rather loosely draped over the box, leading me to suspect that the remaining stock of these had been opened and disc #37 replaced. What a relief!
That aside, let me say that this set is incredible! Sound quality is outstanding, with all the warmth found on the original vinyl releases -- at last! Although I own a great number of these on vinyl, I missed a few over the years and this is like a gift from heaven to finally have every album with the original artwork and liner notes. Any fan of Glenn Gould should order this immediately before it goes out of print.
Truly, I am astounded by not only the price, but that this set even exists at all. It is, and will always be, the crown jewel of my entire CD collection.
Free Music Review: A feast for the ears! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this set about a year ago and can't stop playing it, but with 80 CDs, why would you want to? I came to Glenn Gould's music years ago, like many others, via the first version of the Goldbergs, but this magnificent collection opened my mind to his other marvelous interpretations. The Bach is there, of course, (all of it) and is undoubtedly the foundation of the recordings. But to hear Gould play Mozart, Beethoven, Hetu, Brahms, Sibelius, etc., is a tremendous musical feast. You probably won't like all of his nuances, since he considered the pianist to be co-composer (and certainly played as though that was the case). But the rest of the recordings, including his gorgeously sensitive versions of William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons, his 4 hands Wagner and a smorgasbord of other rare treats will leave the classical music fan breathless. This is a tremendous bargain that the Gould fan will treasure forever. And I'm actually beginning to like Schoenberg...
