Free Music Notes for 90 MillasFree Music Review: Another Stellar Addition... Hit: 5 Stars
"90 Millas" is another stellar addition to Gloria's catalog, and ranks among her finest albums in any language. There have been many comparisons between this CD and 1993's "Mi Tierra," but "90 Millas" is a much more modern take on Cuban music, though it does draw heavily on the musical sounds of the past. Therefore, it is not "Mi Tierra: Part 2," but rather a blend of traditional concepts with modern sensibilities. What makes this album a stand-out is its stellar musicianship-Gloria is joined by 25 of the Latin world's top artists in an all-star celebration of the culture-and passionate, assured vocals. Gloria always sounds especially comfortable when singing in her native tongue, and these new songs showcase that confidence. From the yearning of "Esperando (Cuando Cuba Sea Libre)" to the urgency of the title track, her voice blends with the island rhythms in an intoxicating cacaphony of sound. She is sensuos on "Me Odio" and the beautiful ballad "Besame" and fearless on "Caridad," an irresistable and highly danceable highlight. And then there's "Morenita," which sounds unlike Gloria has ever done. It's the perfect track to showcase how this artist can blend the sounds of the past with those of the future seamlessly. The production on "90 Millas" is top-notch and each song is a winner, which is rare in today's market of filler material. The album, as a whole, is more consistent than "Abriendo Puertas" (1995) and bolder and more rhythmic than "Alma Caribena" (2000), making it an absolute pleasure to listen to, regardless of the language you speak.
Free Music Review: "Mi Tierra" Part 2 - She finally did it! Hit: 5 Stars
For years, I have waited for Gloria to make a sequel to her smash early 1990s classic "Mi Tierra" (the best Spanish language album in existence, according to me). Who could forget that album, and song after beautiful song that still resonate after all these years - "Si Senor" and the absolutely breathtaking "Con Los Anos Que me Quedan".
"90 Millas" is more of a return to form for Gloria, and outdoes all her previous CDs from the late 1990s. At one point, the native language albums from Estefan were not at all inspiring or interesting, and seemed to insult the memory of "Mi Tierra". However, when I first heard "No Llores" I knew this was the return of Gloria in a big way, and Im glad to report that the entire CD has the very Cuban, carnival feel that some of the upbeat tracks on "Mi Tierra" did. Remember "No Hay Mal"? Well, this CD has LOTS of songs just like that, so you know what you're in for.
If you liked her last album, the widely appreciated "Unwrapped", you will love this. Its three times better, and quite an achievement. Also, if you know anyone who loves "Mi Tierra", this would make a perfect gift for that person. If you're Cuban, you need to obviously own this immediately. I'm so glad that Gloria is embracing her Cuban roots without any pretense.
Five Stars.
Free Music Review: One of the best albums you will ever hear Hit: 5 Stars
I love Gloria Estefan. I have been a fan of her English language albums and bought Alma Caribena several years ago and loved that. I decided I missed that sound. Let me tell you....Gloria is outstanding...in her native tongue. Her vocals are a thing of beauty. Everything about this album is fantastic. I do not understand a word of Spanish (okay maybe a few words) but I still love the music. It's a shame because many English speaking folks do not appreciate this sort of music. They are sadly missing out. It's breathtaking. I have listened to this album over and over again since I bought it about a month ago. I don't tire of it because I hear something different every time I listen and it inspires me to want to learn Spanish. I recommend this album to lovers of music. It is Gloria Estefan's best album and one of the best album's I have ever listened to. Much musicianship went into making this album and you can hear it! Emilio (Gloria's husband) deserves great credit too for his role in putting this album together. I hope Gloria continues to record in Spanish and forgets English language albums which don't do her voice justice. Muchas Gracias Gloria. 90 Millas rocks!!!!!!
Free Music Review: Gloria - "tu mereces la gloria" Hit: 5 Stars
This new album by Gloria Estefan is another showcase of her incomparable talent as an artist of this unique genre "son cubano" which she has elevated to yet another level. This album is another tribute to the essence of this genre and Latin music in general. One will always dare to compare and ask if Gloria can produce another stellar album like Mi Tierra, well I will say she has done it and the two albums should not be compared. This one continues where Gloria left off. It's filled with that singular mix of Latin rhythms that Gloria masters so well combined with nostalgic lyrics for her homeland, Cuba. I had no doubt that this production would be another top notch album, I just wondered which song would be the most outstanding. While the whole cd can be played non stop, I have to recognize #5- Caridad, #7- Besame, #11-Volvere, and #12- Esperando as exponents of tremendous Latin music. Cuba, Cuba.. algun dia seras libre. Felicitaciones Gloria.
Free Music Review: I get accused of only 5 Stars
....albums by gorgeous blondes. That isn't true, but here it would only be half-true; Gloria isn't blonde. This is an absolutely great album by a singer who proved her worth long ago; I don't know that she's ever sung a bad note.....
This album of what, to me, were unknown songs will appeal to two fan bases; [1] fans of Gloria [2] fans of Cuban music, of which we have plenty, as Cuba is only "90 Millas" away. It was a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. If you can understand Spanish, you'll like it even better.
Gloria Estefan is a fabulous singer who, here, benefits from great back-up, and engineering. If you have any interest in Gloria, or this genre of music, don't miss it.
