I was floored by Goapele when I first heard her--by a complete accident. Seldom does an artist come around that's so pure, emotional, and talented that one can't help but take notice.
Goapele worked for two long years promoting this album (and its self-released predecessor, "Closer," which is now a collector's item) before Columbia/SME took notice and gave this album a well-deserved major-label rerelease with worldwide distribution and an extra track. If you like emotionally true music, look no further. There's no posing, nor are there cryptic, indecipherable spiritual messages--just pure music and feeling from an incredible singer-songwriter.
The breadth of this album is impressive as well. The songs run the gamut from trip-hop to R&B, and even German lieder (art songs). There's even some old-fashioned boom-bap for you hip-hop heads out there (but with an R&B twist, of course, as Ms. Mohlabane is not an MC), from Pep Love providing guest lyrics on the stunning "Ease Your Mind," as well as her collaboration with Zion I and Casual on "The Daze."
With so many similar artists these days, a real star-in-the-making comes around and blows away the competition. This album is so good, you won't be able to wait to see what she does next. See what the future of pop-oriented music holds.
