Free Music Notes for GodsmackFree Music Review: Good Hard Rock Hit: 5 Stars
I would like to start off by saying this, if you don't like this style of music don't review this album. The reviews are written with the album being compared with similar albums(don't say you hate it then make a reference to slayer or a heavier band), so if you're going to hate on this album because you listen to gothic metal(oh god!), then please don't review it.
As this band was originally an AIC cover band in not's surprising that they have a similar sound. But to merely call them an AIC rip-off is just not right. This album has many more influences to it's style including Mettalica, STP, and a slight bit of Nine Inch Nails among others. To call this band an unexperimental is also a pointless comment if used negatively. Many famous and influential bands are straight forward and same sounding. The last time I checked ACDC was considered classic, but most of their songs sound very much the same and even the two different singers sound alot alike.
Alright, onto the songs. I'm not gonna give each song a rating because in my opinion all the songs are good.
The intro song for the album "Moon Baby" is an absolute killer an is a good mosh song, the ending instrumental part is just awesome.
Whatever is a good song to listen to while playing games and can still be heard on the radio occasionally.
Keep Away has a good intro and a a simple but cool solo.
Time bomb is an angry song with awesome screaming by Sully.
Immune I think is really under-rated but it has a really good heavy slow down part.
Someone in London is usually seen as being thrown in but I like it.
The next three songs (8-11) do not really stand out but are still good #10 Stress is one of my fav GS songs because of the vocals and overall stupidity(think retarded-good like SOAD's Sugar) and #11 Situation has one of my fav GS solos.
Finally ending the album is Voodoo. Probably the most famous song by the band this song is a lot more mellow than the rest of the album. This song is basically meant to trip you out while stoned.
Alright so you like this album and you'd like more. Try listening to System of a Down, Disturbed, KoRn, Three Days Grace and Drowning Pool. Also you should try Pantera as they ROCK!!! R.I.P Dime
If you've already heard these bands and liked them then odds are that you'll like this album as well.
Free Music Review: Where it all began again... Hit: 5 Stars
Remeber when metal was good? When Metallica's guys still had long hair? When Dave Mustaine and Megadeth were still riffing at Mach 2? When Pantera and Sepultura were in the Top 40? This album, released in 1998, brings it all back. Godsmack, although with their nu-metal and Alice In Chains influences, are one of the saviors of hard rock. This and Awake are the two best heavy metal albums IN HISTORY. When their epynonymous debut came out, it was still underground, but touring and MTV promotion boosted it to shift over 3 million copies. And they haven't sold out. Wow.The obvious highlight of this album is the haunting tribal closer, "Voodoo". This song is perfect. Starting with a chant, and being augmented and filled with the jungle drums and light riffs, with Sully's poetic rhymes. Other good songs are the hit singles, "Keep Away," "Whatever," and "Bad Religion". Of these, "Whatever" was the big catchy MTV video. "Keep Away" was the sludgy metal anthem, complete w/ guitar solo. It also set the precedent for their entire next album. "Bad Religion" was the fast, quick, hard-hitting track that flows fairly well. That was history. Other noteworthy tracks on the CD are "Moon Baby," the sample-heavy opener, and "Time Bomb," a nice slow track. Sully's really paining to sound like Hetfield on this one, and it works. Now come the downsides: The lyrics. Here's a recurring theme: "Go Away!" "Keep Away!" "Stay Away!" "Get Away!" "So Far Away" "Now Go Away!" Thankfully they get out of this rut by the time of Awake. Another thing: Tony's solos. Too few and far in between. Robbie. Not enough bass. We need more heavyness! Other than this, and the fact that all the songs sound remarkably similar, the album's a winner. It's better than Awake in that you can actually identify what song you're listening to, but Awake is the overall better album. All in all, this was the beginning of a new age of metal. In 1998, people looked on in wonder as Godsmack revitalized the maimed corpse of rock music. All those people who down these guys, calling them 'ripoffs' or 'corporate, cheesy, teen-angst rock', you can go back to your Dream Street and Puff Diddy(or whatever his name is now) CD's now, children. Godsmack kick and will rule the future of metal with an iron fist!
Free Music Review: Brutally Heavy Hit: 5 Stars
I must admit at first I was not into Godsmack at all but then as time went on my friends turned me on to them and I became a really big fan. Like I said in the title this album is brutally heavy. It's great to hear a metal band without a dj or a rapping frontman not that there's anything worng with that but there comes a time when you just want to hear straight forward balls to the wall metal, and that's what these Ozzfest veterans are. I also must give credit to guitarist Tony Rambola for trying to bring guitar solos back into the music industry. Their debut opens with the best song on the album Moon Baby. It is extremely heavy and puts rap rock bands like Korn and Papa Roach to shame. The next song was their first single and the song that put them on the map. The Alice in Chains inspired Whatever is another one of the best songs on the album. Keep Away is another bone crunching song with a a catchy chorus that you'll be singing for days. Time Bomb begins with techno style keyboards which builds anticipation for when the song kicks in, then once it does it will be sure to please any metal fan. Bad Religion is another really heavy track. Nothing much to say about it. Immune is another amazing song. Especially the guitar. Another really strong point on this album are the drums which were played by vocalist/guitarist Sully Erna. He shows that he's a top notch drummer. Someone in London is slow and heavy. Think Sad but True by Metallica. Get Up, Get Out and Stress both stay true to the vibe of the album. They are both really heavy with a solid bass groove and solid drums. Situatuion is probably the most complex song on the album. Simply because of the tempo changes. It goes from loud and agressive to slow and moody. The last song on the album is also their biggest hit, it is the middle eastern flavored Voodoo. A song like this has never been done in metal. It begins as a chant then goes into a heavy bass and percussion groove. Everything on this song just works. Godsmack is an amazing band. This album is perfect for any metal fan who wants a breath of fresh air from the metal scene today. There is no rap or turntables just pure metal.
Free Music Review: Situation Time Bomb Hit: 5 Stars
THE BAND: Sully Erna (vocals), Tony Rambola (guitars), Robbie Merrill (bass), Tommy Stewart (drums & percussion).
THE DISC: (1998) 12 songs clocking in at approximately 55 minutes. The disc contains a 4-page foldout with song lyrics and credits, one band picture, and thank you's. Label - Republic/Universal.
COMMENTS: There are an awful lot of nay-sayers out there griping that Godsmack is simply an Alice In Chains or Soundgarden rip-off. I'm not buying this opinion at all. The Boston-based Godsmack may have several influences... and comparisons can be made (to the bands mentioned above), but they have a sound destinctly their own. Sully's vocals and Tony's guitars atest to that. I also feel that their success is due to persistence and a lot of hard work. Constant touring and lots of energy on stage - leaving everything they've got on the floor when they're done. Stints with 'Ozzfest'; worldwide tours with Black Sabbath; a Woodstock appearance; a Grammy award on their "Awake" (2000) album; Grammy nomination for "Faceless (2003); song writing for movie soundtracks ("Any Given Sunday" and "The Scorpion King")... proving Godsmack is legit and an in demand rock band with something to say. With all said, I feel this self titled debut is their strongest album. The first 3 tracks here kick you in the face - and are perhaps the best on the disc... "Moonbaby", "Whatever" and "Keep Away". Solid rockers follow with "Bad Religion" and "Immune". The album ends with a slow (almost tribal) track "Voodoo" (liner notes say this is a 4-and-a-half minute song, but my CD player tells me it's 9 minutes long). Some of the songs do tend to sound alike on first listen, but with repeated spins they take on their own identity. As good as Tony can shred on guitar (distortion and feedback add to the flavor), I must acknowledge Tommy Stewart's chops on the drum kit. His old school style reminds of a young Keith Moon. Great songs. Crisp sound production. Great disc.
Free Music Review: Awesome band Hit: 5 Stars
Godsmack is definately the best nu-metal band ever. I mean it. If you don't believe me, let's compare and contrast Godsmack from a typical nu-metal band....
LYRICS:
Typical nu-metal band: Whiny agnst-ridden lyrics repatitive enough to make Cannibal Corpse lyrics seem meaningful.
Godsmack: Great lyrics, un-whiny, and kickass.
GUITARS:
Typical nu-metal band: One riff repeated over and over and over and over and over and over and over ad over again
Godsmack: Great riffs and (gasp!) guitar solos!
BASS:
Typical nu-metal band: What?! You mean there's a bassist?
Godsmack: Great bass-lines that you can hear.
DRUMS:
TNMB: Simplistic.
Godsmack: Great drumming with tribal drum beats.
VOCALS:
TNMB: Whiny, high-pitched and crappy sounding.
Godsmack: Exellent vocal range, from growling (Whatever) to melodic singing (Serenity).
Need I ay more about the comparisions?
Their self-titled debut album is one of the best nu-metal albums ever. In fact, the only nu-metal band I think is better than Godsmack is Helmet, but then again they DID start nu-metal. It's a shame that Godsmack gets so much hate because they got their name from an Alice In Chains song. They're a very talented band. As for the tracks, here is the song rating:
1. Moon Baby 5/5
2. Whatever 5/5
3. Keep Away 5/5
4. Time Bomb 5/5
5. Bad Religion 5/5
6. Immune 4/5
7. Someone in London 4/5
8. Get Up, Get Out! 5/5
9. Now or Never 4/5
10. Stress 5/5
11. Situation 4/5
12. Voodoo Best song!
Bottum line:
A great debut for a great band. Don't listen to the one-star reviewers. Best song is (obviously) Voodoo.
