I think that the whole concept of this CD has much to do with Sully's life and the changes he went through in 2005. He has given up smoking and drinking, and I think it's a vital change that has improved song-writing. The whole CD sounds different than the previous ones. It's more fresh. They've changed amps, and while Faceless was dominated by Tony's leads, here are many vicious riffs from Sully. It is their most mature album, that brings new things into their sound, such as 'Shine Down' with this cool, old-school harmonica solo, 'Hollow' which is a touchy acoustic song, and the Lisa Guyer's voice composes very good with Sully's voice. 'Voodoo Too' also brings some magic(k) that is Godsmack's trademark, it sounds more rock, and the drums are heavier but the tribal influences can be well heard, I would risk claim that it's better than original 'Voodoo'. Another example of progression and maturity is the last track, which is kinda different than the previous Godsmack ending tracks. It is very slow, with unique atmosphere, and great lyrics. Sully Erna did very, very well producing this album. Lyrically, this album is their most mature and creative. I like to listen to this album from the beginning to the end, I don't skip any track. I think 'Speak' deserves #1 on Mainstream Rock, it maybe considered simple or not progressive, but it's catchy and it's a great choice for the first single. Godsmack is the only rock band that has gotten 13 singles in Top 10 Mainstream Rock tracks, and I wish them all the best. I would even risk saying that this CD overwhelms Metallica's efforts after Black Album, which is very strong claim, I think, for someone who listens to Metallica since 1994.
Free Music Review: OM MY GOD!! Hit: 5 Stars
What is there not to like about this cd? I have been a fan of Godsmack from day one and each time they come out with a new album, I think there's no way they will be able to top the rest and they do it every time! There is a variety on this cd, it's not all hard, but even the slow songs jam. One Rainy Day....the vocals are great, the background sounds like it could be a little "Zeppelin-ish" and just when you think Sully Erna's voice may crack.....he carries the tune through.
I have always thought Sully Erna has a great Rock voice. It sounds like a man and not some high-pitched punk. On this cd, it seems as if he had some singing lessons, not that he ever needed singing lessons, but because he has total control.
Temptation....this song is the BEST on the album and I don't know why I haven't heard it on the radio yet. This song jams and the lyrics are excellent. Tony Rombola totally jams on this song!!! Robbie Merril is equally awesome! And of course, Shannon Larkin is still one of my favorite drummers. He knows how to drum, that's for sure.
The rest of the cd is absolutely fantastic. Enemy, Speak, Livin' In Sin........are all excellent tunes.....thus the reason for buying the cd in the first place. I do have to admit that I could be bias since I have been starstruck since seeing them on their tour in June here in Chicago. I have never seen such a fabulous and entertaining rock show.....and I have seen a lot! They have no props, and they don't just stand around on stage.....Godsmack has energy and so does this cd.
Free Music Review: New and Old - The Evolution takes us down the road Hit: 5 Stars
I've read some mixed reviews on this album. Not sure how any fan of Godsmack could find fault in this album, still some have. Maybe it's because they secretly were expecting each successive album from GS to become more and more heavy? I think Godsmack has shown a progressive maturity on each new album. I like heavy, heavy music just for the record, but I must say there is such a thing as too heavy. Godsmack has never, nor do I believe will ever be too heavy. That is the balance which they maintain and to my pleasure is the distinctive draw that brings me to play each and every one of their albums over and over again. Don't give me those throaty screaming into the mic bull*hit of an excuse for singing that you can't even understand. Don't give me the two jab, patty cake, slap fest guitar crap that barely makes a rhythm. And despite what some people think the faster the music goes doen't mean it's heavier, give me a break. If you want speed metal, this album isn't for you. If you like just heavy metal, you will find some appealing tracks on it. However if you love hard rock, then this album is a must buy. Why? Because that's what this album is HARD ROCK, that's what Godsmack is . . hard rock with metal tendencies. Compared to the rest of their albums this one will not fail to please. There are a few slower song on here, but like Sully says "we ain't making no f*cking ballads anytime soon". If you've been trying to decide whether or not to get this album, quit thinking start acting, buy it!

The bonus track on the Target-exclusive version of this album is actually a "hidden bonus track." I'm not sure how the bonus track is placed on Best Buy's version, but on the Target version the song (called "I Thought") starts at about the 12:20 mark on track 11, "One Rainy Day." You'll have to fast-forward through about five minutes of empty space to get to it, but it's well worth it.
If that doesn't work, then your girlfriend just may have gotten a copy of the CD that doesn't have the bonus track. See, when the CD first came out last Tuesday, all of the copies had stickers saying "Includes Target-exclusive bonus song," or something to that effect. Now, there are two different editions...one that says that, and one that just says "Featuring the first single 'Speak' " or whatever. (I know this because I am a Target employee...) I do not know if the copies which do not explicitly state the inclusion of a bonus song have it on there anyway, but if your girlfriend still has her receipt she can bring her copy back for a new copy of the exact same CD...just make sure she gets one that has the "bonus song" label on it (both editions of the CD ring up with the same UPC, so it won't affect the exchange). Tonight at my store there were several copies of both editions, so she shouldn't have much trouble tracking one down. Even if she doesn't have her receipt any longer, she may be able to use her driver's license to do an even exchange.
Hope that helps some. =)

I've listened to all of Godsmack's previous albums (including the acoustic "The Other Side"). I've seen them live when they opened for Metallica's Madly in Anger with the World tour. So I've been a fan for quite a while and have been looking forward to this release.
This is (as pointed out by other reviewers) quite a bit slower than Godsmack's previous releases. While I personally like their heavier stuff and will always see them as primarily a heavy mettle band, this does show their capability of doing something slower. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, nor should it be a huge surprise given "The Other Side" as a whole plus some of their other songs (ei: Voodoo, Serenity and Spiral) show that Godsmack are able and willing to slow things down when they have a mind to.
While I like heavy music and while that's typically the whole point of buying a heavy mettle album, I have personally always had a respect for the softer side of otherwise heavy bands. Metallica has Fade To Black, Welcome Home, Nothing Else Matters and the whole Load/Reload era. Godsmack has Voodoo, Serenity, Spiral and The Other Side album. I really can't find fault with them for toning things down a little for this album.
For all the headbangers out there there's still some hard hitting tunes on this album, no worries. This album still has some stuff for you. But be warned that this, more than any of their previous albums, has more of the softer side balancing it out.
